About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- gatorsina0 contributionsWhale watching in rough conditionsTour guides and staff were friendly and accommodating. We were offered overalls in case you didn’t bring waterproof pants and jackets. Our tour was considered “rough” due to 20-30min winds and gusts up to 40mph. I pregamed with a meclizine 24 hours prior to the trip and then again 3 hours prior and did not get sea sick. They do offer the pills there free of charge but it won’t do much since it takes 30-60min min to work in my opinion. So if the weather forecast is looking rough, pregame with meclizine ahead of time. We saw some porpoises but no whales. Disappointing but not the captains fault. Overall good trip.Written September 19, 2024
- Ivan B0 contributionsWhale watching experienceBooked this tour from get your guide, arrived by cruise ship and walked 5 minutes to the jetty, got onboard and boat left for our tour on time. Massimiliano was our guide and very informative commentator. We would surely do this tour again and recommend it to all ages.Written September 6, 2024
- PBPG0 contributionsOk but a little disappointingThe deal included a pick up from a bus stop near to our hotel. This cost us an extra £20. It turns out that our hotel is about three minutes’ walk from the dock we were setting off from. Bit of a rip off. The half covered boat got us to Puffins for sure, though most were either in the water or flying and given the motion of the boat it was not very easy to get either a good look at them or a decent photo. The boat really didn’t quite get quite close enough. The commentary was a bit weak, not too much detail about what you could see, one longish point out about some bird on the far horizon which I am sure no one in the boat but the commentator could see. It was only an hour, but long enough. Overall somewhat disappointed.Written September 4, 2024
- 680JanH6800 contributionsAmazing service from office staff!Unfortunately I missed this tour on 8/20/24 due to unforeseen delays related to cruise ship schedule, however, I must say the office staff at Special Tours did everything possible to accommodate the late arrival.Karolina and Kathi were so great—changing the pick up location, sending a map to show walk between hotel and their pick up stop, even sending a phone number for a taxi when it was apparent the cruise transport would not get me to the hotel in time for Puffin Express pick up. They could not have been more helpful and respond to email with amazing speed. They also helped with booking questions I had. Thank you! I hope I will have another opportunity to go on Puffin Express!Written August 23, 2024
- A_Traveling_Norseman0 contributionsGreat Whale Watching Tour!!!The highlight of our trip to Iceland was spotting 3 whales on our 10am tour. I believe 2 of the 3 were humpback, but they were all magnificent. In fact, we saw these same whales multiple times. Although seeing whales is a matter of luck, this touring company is top notch our guide Lucas was informative as well as funny.Written August 18, 2024
- 969kirstenh0 contributionsWell worth the time and moneyPuffins are one of those must-sees in Iceland. They are absolutely adorable and have some very interesting behaviors, which we learned about. I enjoyed everything about the tour: even though they had warned of "rough" seas, there were minimal waves and no one got sick. Captain was good, and Patrick was really funny, enthusiastic, and informative. I learned a lot and saw SO MANY PUFFINS. They fly really fast so it is hard to get good pictures. There are binoculars on the boat, which helps seeing them on the island (where they are more stationary). When the captain turned off the engine, and we just floated around by the island, it was truly magical. Some people weren't dressed warm enough (it is cold out on the water!), but fortunately there is a cabin on the boat to sit inside and get warm.Written August 15, 2024
- Carol L0 contributionsGreat ExcursionPuffin tour was everything I hoped for and more. Patrick, our guide, was well versed, very educational, and loads of fun.Written August 13, 2024
- 479toddt0 contributionsA WORTHWHILE EXPERIENCE WHILE IN TOWNA great experience and for many a way to view Puffins as well as other birds just minutes from the city. The guide and Captain were outstanding and very helpful and professional. Highly recommended for any visitor and affordable. Thank you for a great time.Written August 11, 2024
- ronsK2620QP0 contributionsFascinatingThe marine biologist on the boat was outstanding. Her presentation throughout the cruise was exceptionally professional. She pointed each species of whales that surfaced near the boat, described the species, what they ate and their migration patterns.Written August 11, 2024
- susanpT6661QD0 contributionsUp Close to PuffinsSmaller boat allowed us to get very close to the Puffin nesting island. The expert on puffins was great and answered lots of questions, including some from our 7 year old granddaughter. The boat was comfortable and there was plenty of time for watching the puffins and other sea birds.Written August 10, 2024

- Nomad409199594710 contributionsSkip the ship and take a RIB boat!My wife and I had a great experience with Special Tours on the RIB boat whale watching tour. The booking process was easy and the staff professional. The weather was chilly and rainy when we took our tour but we were provided warm coveralls, neck gaiter (souvenir!) and goggles to keep us dry and warm. The boat only seats 12 so the experience was more personal and gave everyone a great view. You are right on top of the water so being able to see the dolphins swimming along and under the boat was amazing! We were also able to see a humpback whale and the smaller boat allowed for us to get a closer look than the bigger ships while still giving the animal space. I usually get motion sick on the water but the ride was so smooth even with the choppiness of the waves. Our Captain, Yoda was awesome and funny and our guide, Blanca was fun and knowledgeable. We ended up enjoying a coffee with them afterwards! There was a discount offered at a nearby cafe as well as tickets to the Whales of Iceland museum with the purchase of the tour so that was a nice surprise and a great way to warm up afterwards. Overall, it was truly a great experience and I would highly recommend!Written August 5, 2024
- Sightseer6849730 contributionsPuffin boat rideEnjoyed the boat ride out to see the puffins. The captain and guide were very nice and knowledgeable. We saw a lot of puffins flying in the area, floating in the water and on the island. The boat provided binoculars to enhance your viewing.Written August 4, 2024
- Becci C0 contributionsJust awesomeWe went on a cold wet day but I just can’t believe our luck. Tickets were bought only the night before but offered great value for two adults and two kids, who went free. The boat leaves from a dock within 8 minutes simple walk of the cruise boat. We were on board for three hours - sometimes out on deck, other times inside in the warm with spacious seats and tables. Snacks were very reasonable - a hot chocolate and bar of chocolate cost less than £3. We were luck enough to see two humpbacks, a minky, and more than a dozen porpoises. Friendly staff and a clean, comfortable boat.Written August 2, 2024

Even though it was unclear where the tour starts (GetYourGuide app/confirmation said different than Special tour’s Info office) and we were only offered rain coats (=not anything warmer) to protect us from fish gunk and rain, the trip itself was a success. We went to the Info office, on Grandagardur, at 4:30 to get a ”receipt” to be given on the boat (named ’Rosin’, that was waiting in the marina) and then entered the boat. Once on the sea, the guide instructed us on how to use the rods and in minutes we were getting big cods, one after another. The biggest fishes were kept and the captain grilled them and we ate them with potatoes and sauces. (We only caught cods). Dress warmly and you’ll love this trip.

This was such a fun tour! We were two parents and a teen daughter, and the seas had been rough for a few days prior to this, but our tour was at 5pm, and things had gotten better by then. The office and boats are easy to find in the harbor, and they strongly encouraged us to wear the jackets provided in order to keep the water and fish off of our clothes. Otherwise, we were warm in fleece, gloves, hats, and waterproof/windproof jackets. COVID was still affecting tourism in June, and we only had nine passengers on board, including four kids. We caught so many fish, and I think the kids caught the most! My daughter has Aspergers, and the captain was so kind to her in helping with her fish. Both the captain and female crew member were awesome. I was seasick several times, but none of the other passengers got sick, and the crew was so helpful! It was a little miserable for me at times; however, I still caught fish, LOL. Everyone is different, so this should not deter you from taking this tour. It is great fun for a few hours!

We went on a fishing tour in a rainy day. They provided raincoat. The captain was able to find fish and we got a lot the second we put our rod out. The BBQ at the end was nice too.

This was the best day ever for our group! 7 colleagues doing something completely new to all of us & loving every minute of it! We couldn’t believe how many fish we were able to catch! Amazing! Our guide/captain was a wonderful guy who worked his tail off supervising all of us, while gutting & cleaning our “dinner-to-be”. Which he then cooked to perfection. It was delicious & magical. I highly recommend this tour!

Thank you for your review! We're glad that you enjoyed your Sea Angling tour with us and we will pass the compliments along to the captain and crew. The sea angling tours are always a staff favorite during the summer months - there's something extra nice about fresh fish grilled straight from the sea.
Thank you for sailing with Special Tours, and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Iceland!

There were 10 of us fishing on the boat. It was fun, and unique, but touristy. Wear waterproof clothes as you’ll get wet. We caught at least 40 fish and they cleaned and cooked them on the way back. It was a terrific experience.

Thank you for your review! We're glad that you enjoyed your tour with us and we will pass along the kind words to our crew. Interestingly, the Sea Fishing tour is our most popular tour with locals - having fish straight from the sea always makes for a good evening!

The boat is OK. The fishing equipment is low end: 4ft pole, conventional reel, 2 hooks in red and black tubes, 8 oz sinker. All knots are ugly with long tails sticking out. 45 minutes ride 1hr fishing, frying fish on the way back. 4 keepers whole trip of 15 anglers, about 9 shorts.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that the fishing equipment was not up to standard on your tour - we will forward this review to our angling captain as we prepare for next year's spring and summer seasons.

The staff was amazing. Very helpful. The bus driver warned that it was rough at sea that day. We both took Dramamine and both got extremely sea sick. They also have Dramamine at the reception which I thought was very nice. It was our first time fishing and we were both able to catch something.

This was easily the best fishing experience I've ever had! Everybody caught lots of fish (10+ each) and we had a great time. Even if you have little or no fishing experience, this is still a fun trip... the fishing is super easy! No bait and no casting... just drop your line in the water, let it sink to the bottom, then reel it in when you feel something on your hook. The crew were very friendly and helpful, and they even did a great job cooking our catch on the way back. If you really want to max out your time in Iceland, give this a shot... you won't be disappointed!

Hi there,
We're sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience. Despite what the weather felt like here in the city that day, it was not good out at sea. It can be very different out away from the harbour. In this particular case, we did wait until shortly before the tour because the wind was supposed to die down and the weather to get better. That, unfortunately, didn't happen and we had to cancel. Otherwise it would have been a rough, unpleasant trip for everyone, with seasickness and so on. Again, sorry for your disappointment, but nature's ways force us to make some unpopular decisions sometimes!
