Landmannalaugar was stunning - yes! But its not the mountains who deserve a review here, its our outstandingly cool guide Simon. Having had him as guide resulted in me smiling the whole tour through. In my life, I did a lot of mini-bus tours in many different countries and I would really consider myself being able to judge whether Simon was just another cool guide or an extraordinarily good one. This guy really loves his country and never shows the tiniest sign of being bored from the tours. He managed to turn our tour into a life-time adventure (when we visisited Landmannalaugar the whole place including the streets were covered in thick snow). He managed to drive us safely even though we had difficult road and weather conditions. Also, he seemed super genuine and really had a talent for entertaining.

A tourguide can make the same of a difference for a group of travellers than a
teacher can make for a class. The same tour with a different guide would have only been half es great as it was, just like one and the same subject can be taught interesting or averagly by a teacher.

Goodbye was even a bit hurtful.

GrayLine, keep him :)

Thank you louisaumdiewelt for your wonderful review and to make absolutely clear we are keeping Simon. So glad you enjoyed the tour of Landmannalaugar with us one of our best loved nature sites. The weather turned into Autumn on our last tour to the area and lucky we were able to operate this for the end of season before the highland roads closed due to snow. Uour comments and compliments are very much appreciated and will be shared with our colleagues and Simon of course

We did this tour our first day in Iceland. I was expecting terrain like the Scottish highlands, so the almost Martian landscape of Iceland’s high country came as a complete surprise-Miles of black sand desert and lava fields with little to no vegetation despite abundant water. Landlammalauger is a green oasis here with a warm spring where you can soak if you desire. The day we visited, as the spring was overflowing with people and too crowded to be enjoyable I took a pass on the spring. The hike however, was quite interesting.

Our guide, Dagmar was very knowledgeable, and our driver was phenomenal given the large bus that he had to maneuver over washboarded dirt roads.

During my visit to Iceland, I went on four separate tours with Gray Line: Landmannalaugar, Reynisfjara, Jökulsárlón, and the Golden Circle. All of my bus drivers (Aðalsteinn, Valle, and Sindri) did a spectacular job regardless of the conditions of the road or the weather. They were also all quite friendly and personable despite that not technically being their job. Each tour was spectacular and the time given at each stop always seemed to be exactly enough for its purpose.
The real gem of the tours, the only reason I am writing this review, and the reason I went on so many tours with Gray Line, however, was the tour guide that I was lucky enough to have for most of my tours: Simon. Despite the fact that most of the tours were quite lengthy and relatively exhausting, Simon kept a smile on my face the entire time. His commentary was not only informational, but also entertaining. He was even kind enough to share his personal number so that those in the back of the bus would not have to stand or yell to ask their questions. He was extremely accommodating and deserves more praise than I could possibly type out. I spent my whole summer traveling and never found a tour guide better than Simon. If I could give him more than five stars, I absolutely would.

Long but well worth the effort of going. The tour was well structured and because of the remoteness of the area I felt safer travelling in a large coach with an experienced driver as we were, plus there was plenty of room because it was only half full. The pick up in the morning was quite sloppy though, no explanation that there would be two buses, so you just hop on the first unmarked one and then go to a bus station, it was all a bit confusing and I had to keep asking rather than it being explained before or during the trip.

The tour guide was fine, although he said just to follow the hiking path round using the white markers and then the markers stopped mid way causing some panic for quite a few of us in the group, better explanation of the route beforehand would have helped.

FYI this tour includes entry into the hot spring, I didn’t want to go in so in hindsight I could have probably got a cheaper tour without that part, that was me not reading the small print! A great day out all in all though, really worth going to Landmannalaugar.

Thank you FrequentFlyer2030 for writing a review of your trip to Landmannalaugar. Our small shuttles collect passengers from the city center and bring all to our main terminal where the tour coaches depart from. The larger coaches are not allowed on many streets in the center and would take forever to collect from each hotel and tour bus stops. Very sorry that you found this confusing or not explained properly. The tour goes to the highlands and a national park where entry fee includes the hot pool and this is included and not a separate payment but included in the ticket price. The park fee also includes use of changing, shower and toilet facilities. Glad you enjoyed the tour and the hike, paths are normally very well marked and mapped at the beginning of the trail. Apologies if this was not explained well.

This trip did not start off great as being a foreigner it was not specified exactly where the pick up was, so I almost missed the tour!
But the trip was breathtaking. The diverse terrain travelling to Landmannalaugar was out of this world.
Loved the hike through the lava fields and smelly sulphur spots. And then to top it off the swim in the hot pool was awesome!
