The famously 5-gaited Icelandic horse is also noted for its good nature, making it an ideal ride for first-timers and pros alike. Put on your provided gear, mount your horse, and head out for a ride around the peaceful countryside. Afterward, get back aboard the coach for a journey to the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, site of the first Icelandic parliament and home to the “rift valley,” where the continental plates of North American and Eurasia meet. After a stroll around Thingvellir, it's onward to the mighty Gullfoss, an impressive 2-tiered waterfall set in a canyon on the Hvítá River. Your final stops are the nearby spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur, both of which erupt every few minutes, sending plumes of water into the air. Your tour concludes with a drop-off back in Reykjavik.

I loved the experience. Thanks to our guide Louisa Dainius for the explanations throughout the tour. It's a long bus ride, but it's worth it.

Excellent experience of the Golden Circle with a reputable operator
I went on this Grey Line operated tour with the Hotel Pick up option (it saved me a good 20 minute walk to the central bus station). I was impressed at the efficiency of pick up; the bus was at my hotel on the dot, and the driver specifically called my name as there were many people at my bus stop. Our coach was full, with about 50 people on (mostly British, like myself, and North American). Our guide was an older gentleman, Aleifr (literally sounds like, and translates to the English name Oliver) and gave an overview of Icelandic history, geography and geology whilst on the coach travelling between the different tour locations. It was impressive to see Lake Thingvallvatn and the Thingvellir National Park where the tectonic plates were separating, before we went on to Geysir/Strokkur, and subsequently Gulfoss. Aleifr gave a talk whilst at each site before 'letting us loose' to look around and take photos. He was clearly 'in the know' and made the trip that bit more interesting. Our coach driver was also quite funny, too! Unfortunately, we were delayed coming back as the Coach developed a technical issue, and we had to wait about 2 hours for Grey Line to send a replacement coach. Fortunately, the driver was able to limp the coach to Secret Lagoon, which was only a few minutes away from where we broke down, but disappointingly the operator did not provide free food or drink whilst we were there and most paid for a beer or hot drink themselves. However, I should mention that as we were late, many people who had booked to see the Northern Lights were at risk of missing their trip. Aleifr managed to negotiate with Grey Line that regardless of which company people had booked to go with, Grey Line would take them straight on the tour once the replacement bus took us back to the bus depot. Though this didn't affect me, this was a kind gesture and well received by those who were concerned they were going to miss out on their other experience. Though I wasn't compensated for my lost time, I've given this 5 stars regardless, because the tour was amazing, our guide very knowledgeable and hard working, and the gesture offered by the operator to those who were genuinely affected by the late return to Reykjavik.

        Not very reliable
Not very reliable, you’d think that calling a day before to confirm and ensure your transfer for the following day would be enough, but you might be greatly disappointed like myself today. I had a whole day excursion planned for today, it was very important for me to start it as early as the sun came up, I called the day before to make sure that the bus was going to pick me and my family up at 9:30, everything seemed to be sorted. On the day, a minibus arrived, I went to check if it were ours, I didn’t even get a chance to show tickets, nothing, the driver said he didn’t have anyone else on the list and that another minibus would pick us up. The only other bus that arrived within the specified time window was from a different company, not ours. After the phone call, it turned out that apparently the first bus was ours and they were trying to blame us by saying that the bus arrived but nobody was there (which is a total lie as we’ve been waiting and looking out for the bus since 9:30). Now, we have to wait technically two hours for the next bus, and our excursion will be affected by the fact that now it’ll be ending at around 7-8pm, when it’s going to be dark and there will not be much to see anyway. Very disappointed with the situation and especially with trying to blame it on us! To anyone planning a trip, it’ll be way cheaper and more convenient renting a car than relying on this company.

Our Driver was Helgi and our "host" was Darren and they were both brilliant from start to finish. Helgi was an amazing driver and Darren was very funny, helpful, incredibly knowledgeable and informative. Darren went out of his way to find the answer to a question I'd had, when we were at the Geysir Centre, which was very much appreciated. He made the day so interesting and at the end was saying which other Gray Line Tours to take, what restaurants, bars and shops were well worth a visit etc. My partner and I very much enjoyed and appreciated Darren's input to the day and he and Helgi made it a most memorable experience.

        Great Tour!
Great tour of Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss Waterfall. Plenty of time to explore the views and different areas at the locations, didn’t feel rushed to get round. There are also shops and toilets at each location which are very clean and tidy. The only reason I’ve given 4/5 is that additional pick up locations on the morning would be great - Bus Stop 3 for example.

        I'd recommend any other company!
My partner and I booked a Northern Lights tour with Gray Line Iceland through TripAdvisor, as seeing the Northern Lights was a bucket list experience for us both. The company confirmed our booking twice via TripAdvisor and email, including the pick-up location. On the night of our tour, however, we were left waiting outside for 90 minutes in 2-degree weather, despite being assured over the phone that a bus would be picking us up shortly. When the bus finally arrived, it drove right past us. After calling again, we were informed—without an apology—that the bus was already on it's way and that we could request a refund. Missing out on such a special experience was incredibly disappointing. It’s one thing to lose out due to weather or unforeseen issues, but to miss it because of a tour company’s incompetence feels inexcusable. If you’re considering a Northern Lights tour, I’d recommend looking for a smaller, more customer-focused operator. Unfortunately, Gray Line seems more interested in quantity than the quality of their operations.

What a wonderful experience, we had the pleasure of Helgi driving and Darren as our tour guide who made the whole experience so enjoyable. The tour is great and is truly enhanced by having such a great team taking us along. Would highly recommend this trip and the Gray Line tour operators, They even secure some discount at venues which given the prices in Iceland is always a good thing.

Tour was really easy to book and pick up was smooth. Big shout out to Amelia and driver for navigating the crazy weather on 15 Nov! We saw some excellent sites, well organised and enough time at each to explore.

        South coast of Iceland 🇮🇸
Gregory and Darren were absolutely amazing, Darren was very knowledgeable and friendly, I loved how his humour peeked out through the tour it made it that extra bit fun and felt like we were actually apart of the group as he got us involved by speaking to everyone separate. I learned so much about Iceland from being on the tour from him. Our bus had broken down on the first stop so we had to wait 2hrs but both Greg and Darren resolved it quickly and got us transferred onto another bus to continue the tour. Gregory made us feel so safe when driving, especially when it was harsh wind and fog, he went through it at ease and safely while still getting to our stops on time and finishing at the original time despite the 2hrs we had lost due to the bus being broken. They both made the journey fun and exiting and well worth the money. I highly recommend gray line tours to anyone that is coming to Iceland!

Best trip of my stay in Iceland
The trip was excellent from start to finish. I was in a group with Darren as the guide and Gregor driving. Darren was very knowledgeable and very pleasant and I feel like I have learnt a lot. The places we saw were incredible and we had a decent amount of time to explore each place. There was always a check once on the coach to make sure everyone was back which is also important as I was on another tour (different company) a few days before where a couple was left behind and we had to go back. The black beach and the glacier were one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. Highly recommend.

First and foremost, the horseback riding was amazing! Could not recommend it enough. I would book a visit to the farm separately; they are lovely and would go back again in a heartbeat! The horses are gorgeous and friendly, the staff are kind and accommodating. The lunch was amazing. It was a great experience! The tour on the other hand was AWFUL. Do NOT book through this company. They forgot to pick me up at the horse farm. When the owner of the horse farm kindly drove me (they are the best!) to the park, the driver didn’t seem phased at all that they forgot to pick me up. I had 10 minutes at the park and that was the entire stop i wanted to see. I never received an apology or an acknowledgement. When i asked the driver where i should go with my 10 minutes he just shrugged. I have been waiting for this tour for months and was sincerely disappointed.

Also, the driver hit a car when we returned to the city!! Yes, he hit a car!! I had to walk back to my hotel.

Do NOT use this company for a golden circle tour and book the horse riding separately!

Thank you Taryn J for your review of our combination horse riding and golden circle tour. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience at the start of the tour and the first visit at the national park. Due to weather conditions the actual stop at the national park was cut short and our coach had to move on shortly after you arrived. Glad you enjoyed the horse riding at Laxnes which is certainly a wonderful place to experience riding the Icelandic horse. We have seen some extreme winter conditions with snow and ice cover lately and regrettably incidents can happen as a result. I hope that you enjoyed the other sites visited on the Golden Circle tour

The harm was great. I was a little nervouse when it came to getting up on the horse, it had been so long since I had ridden, but they were helpful & confident. We wound up in a bit of a blizzard. The snow was kind of whipping our faces, when we got back though they warmed us up with pastries & hot beverages.
I was hesitant about booking this, because the Golden Circle part would be in such a large group. (The horse riding was in a small group) I had been leaning towards small group tours only. It was good though. Comfortable bus, we had enough time at the sights (for my taste anyway), & we had good views out the windows.

My wife and 15 year old daughter just returned for a great trip to Iceland. The horseback riding was great fun and lasted about 1 and a half hours through beautiful mountains. Nothing to challenging and the guides were excellent. Good for all levels.

The second half of the day was with guide Dean on our Golden Circle tour. Dean was very informative and well organized. The sights were excellent from the valley view to the Geysers. The full afternoon was a perfect length. The bus was comfortable and clean.

Laxnes horse farm was the highlight of our trip. I will be leaving a separate review for Laxnes which will indeed be 5 stars! The horse ride was closer to two hours in length, and prepare yourself for a strenuous yet gentle ride throughout the lava fields of Iceland. The staff at Laxnes were warm and friendly, and offered us soup for 1500 ISK each. Worth it!
The transition between Laxnes and Gray Line was easy, but we did smell like horse the whole day and were quite tuckered out from riding by the time we got to the Golden Circle portion of the tour. Our tour guide was friendly but a bit monotone, which lulled us to sleep. The Golden circle is pretty cool, but was overrun with tourists. Fortunately, we saw the Golden Circle in a quick yet fulfilling journey which was, in our opinion, the perfect amount to time to spend at the various stops on the circle. I would recommend this day trip to anyone who wanted to see the Golden Circle but not dedicate an entire day to it!

Outside of electricity and hot water, just about everything is expensive in Iceland. This said, this tour, in comparison to most alternatives we considered and pricier tours we have been to, was THE single best tour!

The personnel was fantastic (they equip you from head to toe & they serve you a great cake and hot tea when you come back).

I really enjoyed the warm atmosphere. My son was a bit scarred and wanted to go slower, they managed a different circuit.

This place is legendary in Iceland (everyone seems to know about it and you understand why - you will see many movie star pictures on the walls).

      Would warmly recommend.

I chose this day trip on Viator.Com and it was one of the highlights of my trip to Iceland! Honestly, I could have done without the Golden Circle portion - if you have a rental car it’s fairly easy to drive there yourself. But absolutely be sure to book horseback riding at Laxnes Farms! Everyone was so friendly and the horses were absolutely beautiful. Wonderful experience.

Our short time in Iceland required some compromises. In order to do both the horseback riding and see the Golden Circle sites, we signed up for the full day Gray Line/Viatours Viking Horses and (Express) Golden Circle Tour that combined the two.

Laxnes was spectacular. I loved riding my horse Suna, and seeing the fields of purple flowers, streams and waterfalls. The ride was over an hour and a half, and I enjoyed every moment of it. After our ride, we had delicious tomato soup and fresh whole grain bread. (By Icelandic standards, the price Laxnes charges for all you can eat bread and soup is a bargain.) Definitely 5 star.

A large Gray Line bus picked us up from Laxnes in the early afternoon. I would have much preferred a smaller group traveling by mini-van, but after thoroughly researching the options available from the various tour operators, this seemed to be our best option. Our guide, Darren, an American was a nice fellow, pleasant and amusing. I was quite disappointed he didn't accompany the group from the bus to the actual nature sites we were visiting--just told us in advance what to expect once we made our way down there.

Obviously a tour guide can't accompany 40-50 people on a walk through nature sites. Nevertheless, it would have been nice to have him around to at least point out where the best places to stand were in order to see what we had come for. Was it really necessary to climb those slippery moss covered rocks to get the full impact of the viewing the Gullfoss waterfall? After hearing from Darren that there had once been a 35 foot geyser at the Geysir geothermal area and that its "younger brother" Strokkur erupts every 7-10 minutes, we weren't sure what we were looking at as we watched huge puffs of steam pouring out of the ground more or less consistently. Were we standing in the right place to see Strokkur's eruption or should we have walked on somewhat further to see the really big show? A more engaged guide accompanying a much smaller group would have been more our style.I'd rate the Golden Circle portion of the day 3 star. Morning and afternoon average out to a 4-star rating for the tour as a whole.

Hopefully we'll go back to Iceland one day. (I love flying Saga Class on Iceland Air!) I would definitely go horseback riding again, and choose one or other site, perhaps off the beaten track, to visit in the afternoon, with a van-size group and a focus on nature.

Thank you Profco for your feedback and review of your experience on the Horse Riding and Golden Circle Express tour. Laxnes horse farm is certainly a wonderful place to visit and the area around it spectacular. The light lunch is prepared by the owners and never out of a package, glad you enjoyed your meal and your time in Laxnes. The tour of the Golden Circle in the afternoon is the shorter version of the tour and stops at the main places of interest only 30-45 minutes. The guide will be attending the passengers and looking after them but as most people would like to explore at their own pace it is a challenge for the guide to keep the group together. The Gullfoss waterfall has wood covered paths and viewing platforms as well as a path leading to the waterfall itself and passengers will choose which areas they want to go to in order to get the best views. The original Geysir from where the name of this phenomenon originates from has been inactive for many years but Strokkur its "younger brother" cannot be missed, actually a large sign with the name is visible on site. This younger version is just as spectacular, spouting a mighty steam every 5-7 minutes. I do hope that you can return to Iceland and explore some more of our country.

Wow! This was such a satisfying day. Everyone at Laxnes Farm is wonderful and the horse ride was majestic and exhilarating. I was picked up right on time by the Grey Line bus for the Golden Circle Express, the next leg of my day. Our guide, DeeDee, greeted me so warmly and proved to me one of the most engaging and entertaining tour guides I've ever had. It's amazing what we were able to fit into a few short hours--not only the breathtaking sites (Thingvellir, Gullfoss, and Geysir), but all of the background and history that DeeDee hilariously yet knowledgeably provided. It was a fantasy day.

This was such a great part of our visit! It gave us a chance to see some of the amazingly beautiful sights around Iceland and the horse riding was spectacular - so much fun, well cared for horses, and a great way to explore
Even in torrential rain we loved it!
