About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Q4424GHtylert0 contributionsGreat experience, amazing views, professional guide! Our tour guide, Anika, arrives on time and reviewed our experience levels. She had a plan for which horses would match our riding abilities and it was spot on. We got plenty of pictures and video of the ride as well as information about Icelandic horses and some quick lessons prior to our ride. The scenery was beautiful and the pace followed our ability levels wonderfully. 10/10 would book again!!Written August 22, 2024
- Guide025304526390 contributionsAmzing horsebackriding experience in IsafjordurToday we had a horse riding tour at Fosshestar in Isafjordur. The tour was led by the fantastic Annika. We were picked up just a few hundred meters from the cruise terminal. Then we drove to the stables. It is as you would hope for a visit to a stable... nice and cozy and a place where the people work hard, with love for their animals. Nothing commercial, but nice and primitive and how it should be. After some information, we were allowed to meet our designated horses. Annika knows the horses inside and out. She knows exactly what each one's characteristics are and which one suits you best for the ride. We were allowed to take care of the horses beforehand so that they become familiar... something that is very important for the ride. The ride lasted about an hour. During the ride you got a beautiful view of the surroundings and the animals that walk around freely. The ride itself was not strict. We were assigned to start in a row, which was the most convenient for the horses. However, there were also parts where we walked past each other. As long as you walked behind the tour guide, this was to ensure safety. In between, we also trotted, but only if you felt comfortable with it. At the end, we were given the opportunity to pet the horses and let them outside. Here you could take photos and say goodbye. After we were brought back, we received the photos we had taken, within a few minutes. A video of the entire ride also followed. A very special reminder of this great activity. Huge thanks to Annika for taking such good care of you! It is a must-visit during a visit to Isafjordur. Kind regards, Noa, Anita, Grandpa and LunaWritten July 27, 2024
- 387grahame0 contributionsWe loved the horses, the views and our tour guide was excellentOur tour guide Annika was so patient, kind and enthusiastic about us having the best experience but also clearly loved the horses. She carefully paired us with a suitable horse and also encouraged us as total beginners. The views are stunning and we came away with some great photos and memoriesWritten July 15, 2024
- islandfan920 contributionsBest Stable for Tourist in IcelandI really love going on Ride Tours with Fosshestar. The horses are so nice and they have horses for beginners and advanced riders, so everyone gets the best experience. I also love that you get a private tour and don't have to share your experience with strangers. If you're visiting Isafjördur you should go on a Tour with Fosshestar.Written September 6, 2023

- J B0 contributionsThe highlight of our trip to IcelandI can't say enough great things about Fosshestar and their riding tour - it was the highlight of our trip. Our guide was so informative, kind and helpful. She picked us up in town and drove us a few miles to the stables. The horses - well, they're simply amazing and of course the area we were riding in is stunningly beautiful. We started with meeting the horses and brushing them, then a brief training session (one in our party had limited riding experience). Once comfortable, we set out from the stables and went on the trail. It's an easy trail and we were even able to cross the stream a couple times. a video and plenty of photos were taken by our guide. It was over way too soon - I could have stayed there for hours. If you love horses or are interested in learning more about the Icelandic horses, book this and you won't regret this riding tour.Written August 31, 2023
- akmillerdvm0 contributionsAmazing rideOur guide was so sweet and fun and our horses matched our skill level. They have horses who are for beginners but I feel that you will get the most out of this if you know how to ride.Written August 25, 2023
- Sharon C0 contributionsBest tour in a long time!My wife and I throoughly enjoyed this tour. We have gone on many horse riding tours through out the world but this was the best one we ever had. The guide was great and the Icelandic horses where just amaing to be around. We highly recommend this tour if you are ever in this area.Written August 22, 2023
- alilem20230 contributionsReally nice journeyWe had a private tour. It was a really nice and calm ride. The horses were perfectly chosen to our skills. Our guide was very friendly and told us some informations about the area. We did some breaks for photos and got a video of the whole ride. It was perfekt!Written August 7, 2023
- Justin H0 contributionsGreat time riding adorable, well behaved horsesMy friends and I had coordinated this adventure on our cruise stop. They picked us up a nice short walk away from the cruise terminal, right at the expected time! It's a short drive out to the farm where the horses are. The horses were basically large dogs - we started with ear scratches and pets - at the end after we got off, one of them even rolled around in the paddock just like my golden retriever back home does. Getting them ready proceeded with brushing, then getting the horses ready to go with saddles, etc. The horses seemed very responsive to the basic rein controls even for a novice. They were pretty well behaved the whole time, the only time they got distracted was to eat a snack. I believe the end-to-end experience time from pickup to dropoff was 2 hours 45 minutes, though we went probably a bit slower than we had to due to one less confident rider in our group. Also - they took a video of the ride and a few photos for us at a stop. We heard from them that strange sounds / objects can start to spook the horses so best to leave the photos to them / get them before and after. Overall I highly recommend this as a must do if you're stopping in ÍsafjörðurWritten July 6, 2023
- Kabloom0 contributionsWonderful Riding Experience in IsafjordurI was travelling on a Princess cruise, and booked this horse ride directly with Fosshestar, whough you can book them through West Tours as well. Communications were always prompt and informative, and my pickup from the port area was right on time! I had the opportunity to groom my mare and tack her up, thus able to see first-hand what gentle, well-trained horses these creatures are. After a few minutes getting familiar with each other in the indoor arena, we braved the drizzle for a wonderful trail ride past waterfalls, through pastures full of gamboling lambs, across a river, and through the tide to a black rock beach. I was grateful for the one-piece suit my lovely guide, Veerle, offered me. Veerle taught me how to get my horse to tölt, one of the unique gaits of the Icelandic Horse. It was a blast! I highly recommend booking with Fosshestar for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially if you're a horse lover. You do not need to be an experienced rider to enjoy this excursion. But please, do not exaggerate your experience with horses/riding when asked: You will only embarrass yourself and make things difficult for the staff.Written June 13, 2023

- Melissanuss0 contributionsAn amazing privat tourThe tourguide was good. She answer all questions. The horses lives good. The ride on the horse is so good. - sannevd130 contributionsWonderful rideFirst we got introduced to all horses after which we were assigned a horse according to our riding experience which was nice. We had to clean and saddle the horses ourselves with help of the guide. This was good because this way you can bond with your horse. When we felt comfortable with our horses we went outside for the ride. The ride was wonderful! The guide filmed the full ride which was send to us afterwards. We enjoyed watching it back. We had an amazing time!Written April 5, 2023

Amazing experience overall! Annika was a very informative and personable guide for our group, and told us everything that we needed to know to ride the horses, even though we weren’t very experienced. Would recommend to anyone who wants to ride horses in Iceland, this is the best way to do it.

Pretty scenery but not the waterfalls and beaches that other reviewers mentioned. We rode around an old sheep farm. We appear to have gotten the watered-down and shortened (one hour) version of the tour. We were a group of two and both have some riding experience so it didn't take long to get us on the horses. The guide insisted we ride in a specific order which meant I was stuck behind a horse who didn't want to move. She brought a riding crop to encourage him which is never a good sign. Since she insisted we ride in a line, I am missing from almost all of the video. It's like I wasn't there, lol. All you can see is my husband. My horse was old and stiff. Not his fault but didn't make for a great ride. Didn't manage to tolt, though at least we got to trot. Initially she was going to have us just walk. She didn't talk much so it was a long, slow, silent ride. The owner was offsite so that may have affected the quality and length of our outing. Nice that we got to groom the horses. Enjoyed having a private excursion. This should have been amazing, but it was just OK. Not worth the cost.

What an amazing experience, even for novice riders like us. It started with a horse being selected appropriate to our skill level. We then groomed and saddled our horses. After a quick practice in the riding hall we ventured out into the lush green valley. Along the way we passed dramatic snow capped landscapes, sheep grazing in meadows, nesting birds and two creek crossings on horseback. The tour exceeded our expectations and we would recommend this tour regardless of age and ability ( we are in our 60s). Thanks Fosshestar

One of the best horseriding experiences yet.
Very experienced guide, very cute horses. I like that you take the time to get to know the horse before riding. As experienced riders we were given the opportunity to try tölt and gallop through the valley. Beautiful scenery all around you during the tour. It's clear they take great care of their horses and make sure to match the right horse to you!
As an added bonus you get photo's and videos from your ride as a nice memory! Overall a big recommendation for everyone visiting the Westfjords!

It was a very nice and pleasant tour (by the matching horse) with a great guide: Annika, who always stood by with tips and information. Pictures and video of the tour, which consisted only of the guide and me included. Horse first "got to know" and groomed and brimmed and tries if we can get along 😊. The disadvantage of this quite good method is of course that it deviates from the riding time, which I would like to have tasted longer. So in the end, in addition to the beautiful experience, there remains a proud price for about 1 1/2 hours.

We really enjoyed our tour at Fosshestar! The horses were very good and well chosen by the tour guide. we also apreciated that the tour guide, Veerle, gave us time to adjust to riding icelandic horses in the riding hall. I had not ridden icelandic for a while and my partner had no prior experience but this way we could both get accostumed to the horses at our own pace.
The ride itself was lovely and went through a beautiful valley and along the Fjord. We also crossed a river by horse, which was fun. I could go a bit faster and got to tölt while my partner could continue slower with the tour guide. We both really enjoyed the ride and felt safe at all times.
Highly recommed the tour indepentend of your experience!

If you are in Isafjordur and would like an experience with the unique Icelandic horse, we would highly recommend Annika at Fosshestar. She worked hard at matching our personalities to the horse, and was extremely accommodating to our desires to tolt and canter as much as the conditions allowed. The horses are very well treated and the human riders have the full and intimate experience of brushing the horses, cleaning their hooves and helping to saddle them. These preparations are part of the 2-3 hour experience.

Super fun and adventurous thing to do around here! The horses were specially chosen for you (they are all so cute) and there was time to do some bonding first before riding out. Our guide Veerle was really experienced and very helpful with her tips and tricks and she made it a great event for me and my friends :)

We booked the private horse ride tour before we left for Iceland. We were not disappointed at all. Anna was absolutely delightful as a guide and the horses were in great shape and really fun to ride. They do a nice job of pairing you to the right horse and giving you instructions and a little time to get used to the horse before the ride. I would go back again in a heartbeat!

A unique experience to experience the green valley with the stream in the backdrop of the impressive mountains. Annika is very experienced as a guide and adapts completely to the riders. She chooses the right mount from the herd of beautiful Icelandic horses and gives beginners and experienced riders many good tips to always feel safe and comfortable.
