Fun way to spend a couple of hours!
Fun way to spend a couple of hours. If you like whales this is an informative and cool place to visit. Life-size models and interesting data make for a nice way to spend 90 mins.

    Husavik Whale Museum
Having travelled across the country to go on a whale watching trip, we were mortified when it was cancelled two days in a row due to the weather. Husavik Whale Museum seemed like a good way to ‘see some whales’ up close so we thought we’d give it a go! Although probably not quite as exciting as seeing the real thing, we really enjoyed our visit here. The museum looked quite small and unassuming from the outside, but once inside it seems enormous! There’s so much to look at and so much information to read and absorb. I love whales and I was a bit concerned that it might be a little sad seeing all of the skeletons, but felt reassured that nearly all of them were labeled and being sourced from strandings and died from natural causes. The information about Icelands whaling history was also presented tactfully and gave an unbiased explanation of how and why whaling started and continues in Iceland. There were plenty of more upbeat displays about all sorts of things too. The museum also boasts a fantastic gift shop (arguably the best part of any museum 😂) and the staff are really helpful and friendly. Overall, a good way to spend some time and good value too.

    Cool Little Museum
Definitely very informative with a lot of skeletons. There’s a lot packed in this little museum. Would definitely recommend if you’re in Husavik.

    Great little museum!
Visited Husavik Whake Museum today following our whale watching trip yesterday. Enjoyed learning obscure whale facts and along with the specimens on display, I found other exhibits such as artists interpretations an interesting perspective. Didn't want to spend long in the whaling rooms but can understand why they are in the museum. Especially loved the chalkboard type drawings throughout the lower floor walls. Very cool! Would definitely recommend a visit if in Husavik. We loved Hendrik on the front desk who was very knowledgeable. Also spoke to his colleague who prepared the skeletons which was an extra insight. Husavik Whale Museum you are the best!

    Great experience.
Great museum! Great overview of whale biology and history of whaling. They have a full blue whale skeleton on display. They cover the controversy of whaling in a balanced way, though I am against it. Two hours well spent!

Make sure to visit while in Husavik!
We didn't stop here in 2022 but made sure to do so in 2024, regardless of the fact that our whale watching from Husavik got cancelled for 3 different dates between those 2 years... but I can see how the experience can be even more enjoyable/powerful here after seeing live Whales immediately prior! :) The blue whale remains and the display above are absolutely amazing - these 2 things by themselves are a reason to see this place! The heart of the blue whale exhibit is also mind blowing when compared to a standing human - it was bigger than my wife :) What I didn't care was the video about whaling in Faroe Islands - not only I had experienced whaling in Azores's and Madeira's whaling museums but also I am looking forward to visiting Faroe Islands next year, so it's not the whaling issue - I thought it just made no sense to me that in Iceland, and Husavik in particular aka the Whale Capital of Iceland (as one of the drawings on their walls read) we are watching a movie about another country (one could argue that this is to educate people about whaling but it's not like Iceland didn't do it in the past...) - I think a movie geared towards Iceland and about whales in general would be much more fitting than the Faroe Islands one!

    Very Well Done Exhibits
This wonderful museum has two stories of exhibits all about the many kinds of whales and their habits. From their evolution from a land mammal to the full size skeletons on the second floor, there is much to see, read and learn. Allow plenty of time to fully appreciate this museum.

    “Whaley” good museum!
This museum exceeded my expectations! It is a small museum, but very well done! We spent about 1.5-2 hours here and learned a lot about the lives of whales. We didn’t watch the whaling documentary as we honestly just didn’t want to see that, so that would’ve added on an extra 30 minutes. Great value and impressive museum.

    Whale skeletons!
Wow, the whale skeletons alone make this place worth a visit. Full scale blue whale skeleton is a sight to behold. Narhwal skeleton was also really bizarre, the front tooth is super long and looks unnatural even. There was also a lot of info about whales, interactive things, preserved parts from whales and a short film. Lovely gift shop too.

    Great museam
We visited here after our whale watching tour. North Sailing gave us a 20% discount voucher, children are also free so this was a great deal. We spent over an hour in here, the exhibits and information were excellent. Our teenagers really enjoyed this museam, it was a great add on to our whale watching experience.

The place to stop BEFORE a whale-watching trip
Although this museum isn't large, it manages to convey a lot of information about whales. The most surprising exhibit explained that whales descended from a four-legged land-based carnivore with a nasty looking head and teeth. The real show-stopper was a 25-meter-long skeleton of a blue whale that had beached itself.

    Sad
The museum was very nice however the movie on their theater just really upset me and I left sad and confused. It was all about the Faroe Island and the narrative about why they love the whales and that is the reason they kill them. There is not one single reason why in our times whales should be kill, NO ONE and for a whales museum to promote this kind of bla bla bla is unacceptable. I absolutely regret the visit to this museum

    Very interesting visit
We have visited this wonderful museum during our journey around Iceland. It's located in Husavik , along the main road. We really suggest to spend a couple hours here in order to understand a bit more about this extraordinary giant and be more sensitive about what this huge animal has to face to survive. We have loved it above all 'cs the following day we have seen it during our "whale watching", for sure one of the highlights of our Icelandic adventure! Very recommended

    Awesome exhibition
Very informative and interesting! From the importance of sea kelp forests to the cruel slaughtering of whales in the Faroer Islands - there is a lot to see and learn. Excellent gift shop with quite a few awesome souvenirs ( not made in China).

Just seeing the entire skeleton of the HUGE blue whale was worth the admission price! It was a relatively small blue whale--only about 25 meters long. This museum is the highlight of things to see in Husavik. There is a children's playroom called the Yellow Submarine, with books about sea creatures and many other things for children to do to be entertained. The museum has two floors and is extensive. Don't forget to watch the show and pay a few more kroners to use the 5-minute virtual reality device to feel like you're actually swimming with whales and seals. This remarkable museum is wonderful. I learned so much! You can spend a few hours or all day in here. Great for a rainy day event for sure. Lastly, they have a wonderful and extensive souvenir shop where I could actually buy the things we collect (a shot glass and a fridge magnet) from this specific museum. Most sights in Iceland only sell generic Iceland items.

Small but informative and interesting museum. Lots of exhibits about whale species and many whale skeletons, including a blue whale. Upcoming exhibit about plastics in the ocean. Really cute kids Yellow Submarine play area (the teenagers couldn’t resist a photo opp). Great complement to a whale watching tour.

we had some time before our whale watching trip and spent a really interesting 30 minutes here. we could have easily spent longer. we learnt so much about whales....nice exhibits and photos. the skeleton displays were really effective. In particular they showed the history of whaling...why it had risen ) and how ultimately it had declined

The museum presents whales as unique animals and their natural environment and living habits as well as humans attitude to them starting from early whaling, through massive industrial whaling and its consequences in almost depleting some of the species up to todays protection.
All the presented (11) skeletons of different species were washed out on the Iceland shores by the sea and each of them is accompanied by its story.
Between other things, the museum presents a documentary movie from 70s about a whaling station, which was filmed by czechoslovak film makes and it is presented with original sound in czech and with english subtitles.
Otherwise all the stories and comments are in english and icelandic.
I highly recommend the museum.

I didn't know what to expect but I could have spent hours here. Facts about each type of whale but the exhibit rooms were fascinating. Sections on harvesting, beached whales, specific anatomical variations, etc etc. So interesting!!!
