About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Y6510XSroberte0 contributionsNot worth the price-Misleading advertisingI cannot, in good conscience, recommend this experience. For the steep price of almost 500 EUR, one naturally expects more—especially given the way the tour is advertised. The promise of seeing whales and puffins up close is a major draw, and the primary reason most people would opt for such an expensive excursion. However, the reality fell far short of expectations. We saw puffins, but only from a distance of approximately 1 kilometer, if not more. As for the whales, we caught just two brief glimpses, and even then, only faint silhouettes were visible. I understand that this is wildlife, and the crew has no control over animal behavior. Yet, it feels dishonest to market the experience in a way that leads customers to expect something far more engaging and intimate. Moreover, the price is highly disproportionate to what is actually delivered. Given the lackluster experience and the misleading advertising, I cannot say that the cost is justified. In essence, it feels like the tour is not delivering on its promises, and customers are left disappointed as a result.Written August 14, 2024
- Brooke H0 contributionsWhales were so playful!Loved the guide! She was so passionate when she spoke about the whales and gave a lot of informations on their behavior! Loved how close we were while being respectful of the whale’s environment! My one complaint is that we did more with puffins but still enjoyed! Overall one of my favorite days in Iceland and it’s worth the drive up north!Written July 6, 2024

- 89candicer0 contributionsGreat day for whale, dolphin and puffin viewing! Our guide gave us excellent information about the birds, dolphins and whales that we saw. We hit a bonanza day for white beaked and harbor dolphins as they were in pods that seemed as though they had been paid to entertain us! The captain obviously knew how to follow the signs for the wildlife in the sea. A great day!Written August 15, 2023
- H9994UBcatherineg0 contributionsTour in JuneFantastic fun! Saw heaps of whales! We would recommend this exciting trip to everyone. We saw heaps of wales up really close. It was unsafe to travel to Puffin island the day we went, so we have to appreciate that our safety was top priority. All the staff were fun and super-friendly!Written July 21, 2023

- garysC3911KP0 contributionsGood people to work withWe unfortunately had a terribly stormy sea and as such, our trip was cut short for safety reasons and we didn't see any whales. What I appreciated was that they gave us the option for either a return visit or a full refund. I value companies that are highly ethical and do the right things. That's how I felt about Selka.Written July 10, 2023
- 189ilonav0 contributionsFew hours of relax animal watchingBooking the tour was a little struggle and ended up booking for a higher price (as only then there was place available for the same tour). BUT the tour itself was very well done. Very nice staff both on and off the boat. Have seen several animals: humpback whales, Minke whales, white beaked dolphins. Got good clothing against the wind and a nice hot chocolate on the way back. Left on time and not too busy on board. We didn't get very close to the island of the puffins - which is a bit of a pity as you'd love to see them closer, but also very good that they don't want to disturb the animals breeding - which is of course more important.Written July 2, 2023
- jennydwork0 contributionsIncredible experience! This was an amazing whale watching experience. The weather did not fully cooperate (it was wet and rainy), but it didn’t matter. We were provided with plenty of wet weather gear. The guides were knowledgeable. We saw the puffin colony and multiple humpbacks. One even swam under the boat and breached right in front of us. We also saw them feeding. Absolutely incredible!Written June 21, 2023
- Nicolad8450 contributionsTrip of a lifetime! This was the trip of a lifetime! We were given overalls and a waterproof coat to wear before setting off, it was very much needed as it was a windy day and the waves were quite choppy! There was an informative commentary throughout the trip while the boat searched for any whale sightings alerted by other boats (they keep a safe distance from the whales to protect them) We were extremely lucky to see a Minke whale and several Humpbacks who gave an incredible show-two breaches and lots of fin slapping on the surface of the water! We then moved on to an island where puffins were nesting, the boat couldn’t get too close but we still saw lots of puffins flying and bobbing on the water. I felt very privileged and emotional being able to see these beautiful creatures in the wild, I highly recommend this boat trip!Written June 2, 2023
- lisalR7498DV0 contributionsMuch too crowdedThe crew members on our excursion were terrific and quite knowledgeable. We were disappointed, however, that this company crams WAY too many people on board! I don't even know if that is safe when considering lifeboats. When the crew member directed passengers to a whale sighting, everyone would rush to that side of the boat in hopes of seeing the whale. Unless you happen to be in the right spot, or don't mind being rude and pushing your way through other passengers, or 7 feet tall, you will struggle to see the whales. The boat was much TOO CROWDED.Written May 28, 2023
- 723reedt0 contributionsAmazing experience with great guidesSightseeing is unpredictable, but the guide and captain did their best to find wildlife and share their passion with the viewers. All the guide boats talk to each other so you are sure to find something if it’s in the bay.Written April 20, 2023
- 163dennise0 contributionsNice, but take the Weather into account. We went on a rainy and windy day and we were offered to reschedule. Unfortunately we were only in Husavik for one day so we decided to go anyway. Well.. my girlfriend got extremely seasick but i was able to enjoy at least the largest part of the tour. We saw lots of puffins and despite the Weather we briefly saw a whale! The guide was good and took care of the passengers and it was all organized very well. We got a big lifevest from the company so we werent cold.Written August 3, 2022
- Matthew L0 contributionsAmazing puffin and whale watching tourThe trip was really good, great captain and great info on all the animals. Our trip was meant for the Sunday but weather was too bad so they moved it to the Saturday in which we got to see the puffins and the whales and dolphins. Plus great hot chocolate at the endWritten July 4, 2022

The husavik tour got cancelled due to weather, but they were quick to offer an alternative or a refund, which was nice. Overall, it was fun. They give you overalls to keep you warm and a rain jacket to keep you dry. We saw a few whales and the guide was informative.
Also provided hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls at the end, which was a nice touch.
Definite possibility of getting sea sick due to choppy waters and a smallish boat though. Keep in mind.

We boarded a 9:15AM tour. Despite the heavy fog we saw a few dolphins up close. The main attraction of the day was a minke whale, we were able to observe lots of details. My 6 year old really enjoyed it.
The tour was well organized and the staff are very helpful.
Overall a perfect day!

Salka Whale Watching is now part of North Sailing in Husavik. We went with a cutter because of back problems. This was fine to do, but it was beautiful calm weather. If your physical condition can handle the pounding of a rib, I would definitely consider it. You're faster and closer to the whales. Nevertheless, our experience with the cutter was also very nice.
Whales are not many anymore in September, but we saw 2 of them pop up a number of times.

We stayed in Myvatn area for 2 nights earlier this month as part of our round trip around the Iceland. Our 9 yr old daughter wanted to see real whales instead of going in the museum in Husavik. We had leaflets for all 3 companies providing Whale Watching there and decided that we set off in the morning for Husavik and see which company's morning tour we'll be able to catch. Luckily for us, we got there early enough (9:15) to book us on a 9:30am tour provided by Salka.
There was only 3 of us wanting to go and despite my doubts they said that was no problem, they would still take us out for the whale watching. Amazing! We had our own "private" tour.
Both the captain and a guide were so friendly (sorry, I forgotten their names), helpful and knowledgeable, same goes for the staff in their booking office/coffee house.
We had absolutely fantastic time watching couple of humpback whales swimming and diving close to the boat. Also saw some minke whales and porpoises in the distance but as the humpbacks were so close we decided to stay with them. Our daughter became an expert "whale spotter", she absolutely loved looking out for the whales and learning about them from our guide.
The warm waterproof overalls Salka provided were new, very clean and in a top condition. The boat is a beautifully renovated vessel, they also offered a hot drink and some nice biscuits on the board. On our way back to a harbour we enjoyed the Captain's chat about Husavik area, life in Iceland etc.
What a fantastic time we had with a great company (Salka, the boat crew and the whales)!!!

This company goes all out. Make sure and pick up your tickets first (They are on the main street - impossible to miss) as their tickets give you 20% off of the Whale Museum (a great preview to the whale tour) and 10% off their restaurant and cafe where they sell delicious ice-cream. We took the 1:00 tour which was perfect! Enough time to drive up from Myvatn, go to the museum and have lunch before getting on the boat. Some warnings - do not take Route 87 from Myvatn as it has a long stretch of gravel - the better route is 85 to 845. Plus you can stop at Godafoss along the way. The tour was three hours - and the young lady guide was excellent! Gave us good information all during the trip and answered everyone's questions. The crew were very professional and they give you a full wetsuit to put on so you don't have to worry about getting wet or cold. There was even a cookie at the end. Great service and saw plenty of whales.

Hi hi,
Thank you for your great review and the tips you provide to fellow travellers! Very helpful!!
Godafoss is actually one of the reasons why we have so many whales in the bay, as this glacier river carries a lot of nutrients into the bay which provide food for the whales. So definitly worth a visit ;)
Best regards from Húsavík,

We chose Salka because it was cheaper than the other companies (52 Euros). At first we were hesitant because we heard they were a new company. However, everything was excellent. There were only 6 of us on the tour, so it was intimate and we were all able to see The boat was small and perfect size for what we wanted. We saw several whales, and the driver and guide were nice and did all they could to assure we had as much time at sea near the whales. We were given delicious baked goods and hot drinks on the way back to shore. The equipment was brand new and very comfortable. Highly recommended for Husavik whale watching, wonderful experience and homey company.

We booked the Salka Whale watching in Husavik and we could not have been more pleased. This was our 3rd official whale watching expedition and it was as amazing as any we have been on. Loved the host as she was very knowledgeable of the ocean and of the whales in the area. We were excited to see the humpback whales in their environment and even had a show from one of the younger whales waving at us and jumping.

Let's be clear - the only difference between all the providers of whale watching in Husavik is a type of boat (a fast one or a slow one) and the snacks they serve :))) So your choice is going to be between cookies or buns :)) Otherwise it is just luck. All the boats communicate and it is either everybody sees whales (which was our expirience) or nobody. We were happy with our tour at 8.15pm because there were only 6 people attending which left a lot of space to everybody and created some special atmosphere. I saw that more popular boats were literally crowded (30 people? more?) while ours was almost a VIP ) With regards to whales there is a chance to see them close but the best we saw was 20-30 meters away from us. And in any case please be ready that it is a "whale TALE watching" rather than an "entire whale watching" which brings us to the second point about expectations. The sea was nice, the wheather was good, there were just few people there... our sea trip would be a pleasure even without whales, simply because it is so nice and quiet around you. So obviously the whales is the purpose but if you take all this as a nice way to spend time (not sure about money) surrounded by all the beauty in the world, you won't be disappointed in any case. Ok, you could be of course but still Iceland teaches us that the best thing that we can get is the one it offers right now, so maybe it is a good chance to use this method and just take what is given.
P.S. Our boat was fine, our guide was too, hot chocolate was ok and lots of blue sea around.
recommended with a disclaimer above :)

I have been to husavik in the summer of 2013 and decided to bring a visit to whales in the bay of Husavik with Salka Whale Watching!
It was a really incredible experience to see these magnificent animals with help of a great guide which made the experience even more special.
It was about 3 hours of whale watching, the whale came very close to our boat soo it is really good for taking great pictures with the mountains at the background!
After the whale watching we got offered free hot drinks and cookies, The crew as well onboard as on the shore was incrediblely friendly!
After the boat tour with Salka you even get offered a serious discount at the whale museum and the nearby restaurant.
Next time I visit I will take this boat tour with Salka again!

This 3 hour whale watching tour is absolutely amazing! Last year we did a speedboat whale watching tour in Reyjavik and only saw one whale the whole time. The experience with Salka Whale Watching in Husavik was completely different. It is a much more intimate tour on a vintage wooden fishing boat. And the whale watching off the northern coast of Iceland is much better than the southern coast. We saw several Humpback Whales & Minke Whales throughout the tour...even saw one that breached out of the water! The tour guide & captain were wonderful and the scenery was breathtaking. They even provided complimentary hot chocolate & cookies on the way back to port! It was chilly out on the water but all passengers are provided with hooded overalls which kept us completely warm. Husavik is an unbelievably charming fishing town and Salka Whale Watching was the highlight of our visit there!

Dear Tampaderic,
A thousand thanks for such a beautiful review! We are very happy that you had such a great experience. Indeed, in the Northern coast we are blessed to have many whales. No wonder they say that Húsavík is the whale capital in Iceland :)
Breaching whale? Oh, that is quite something, isn't it? Not many people get to see that, so you are very lucky!
We hope that you will stay lucky throughout your adventures in Iceland and we will be looking forward to seeing you in Iceland again some day :)
Kindest Regards,
Ananda and the Salka team
