      A wonderful experience
We booked the tour a few days in advance when it became clear that we would be in Husavik in time. Boarding was fine. The main part of the experience was of course the whale watching. It started with a number of puffins. Then the first humpback whales showed up. Most of them showed their fin. The highlight of the tour was a blue whale which also showed its fin. We personally preferred the classic wooden boat. It doesn't run fast but the captain managed to get us really close to the whales (Cudos !!). As it was off season there was enough space on the boat and everybody could have a good view. It also means that there are not that many boats out there. In summary again: highly recommended!

      Cold wavy trip of wonder!
We went out on their wooden boat Sylvia which had been the first time in a couple of weeks due to a storm. The swell was quite big but we enjoyed the trip tremendously. Our skipper & guide were fantastic! It took a little while to spot a whale, but we saw a couple of humpbacks which as a first time whale watcher was a magical experience. A pod of dolphins were seen too. The ticket office staff were also very helpful and friendly. Would certainly go with Gentle Giants again if I visited Husavik again!

      Incredible
A truly once in a lifetime experience, hosted by a friendly, knowledgable and very skilled crew. Staff were very understanding of our late arrival due to Ice. The tour was incredible and we were fortunate enough to see a Humpback Whale. We were well kitted for the weather and looked after. Discounts are also provided for some attractions in Husavik. Would highly recommend!

Fun but not what I expected. Don't pay extra for this.
The guides and staff were super nice, and the boat was good enough for watching the whales. It was a bumpy ride though so I would not recommend if you are very sensitive to sea sickness. When we came, we were able to see a good amount of whale sightings, but it was the same 2-3 whales that were just feeding and resurfacing for air, although in total we had about 7-8 "sightings". They did not jump out of the water or do any of that fancy stuff like I was expecting. For most of it, I just saw their tails go down into the water. Still cool though. I would recommend it if you've never done it before, but I wouldn't stress too much if you weren't able to accommodate for this on your trip. I also think that the amphibian boat is more than enough; you don't need to get the speedboat ticket since either way you will be watching from afar, and we were never too far behind the speedboats anyway.

      Respectful and interesting tour
Great tour. The guide (Matteo) was very knowledgeable and explained a lot of whales fact while we were watching them. We were able to spot three different types of whales, always from a safe distance and with respect for them. The boats don't have radars and have super silent motors to avoid bothering the animals

Safe and personable treat for my family and I
Safe and personable treat for my family and I. The company kept us well informed with texts and emails before and after trip; Clerks, guides and captain were knowledgeable and friendly. Totally professional. We chased one humpback around the bay, at a safe distance; the captain trying to give everyone a great experience. The most-excellent whale museum was half a block from the boat office, and helped round out a totally enjoyable afternoon.

Honest company with a fun experience!
The day we went out the waters were very choppy. The company waited until 20 minutes before the tour until they confirmed we were going because they wanted to make sure conditions were safe. Before going, they clearly warned everyone that the sea would be rough! And it was, we did have several people get nauseous. But the guides were constantly checking one everyone. Despite the rough waters, the tour was a blast and we ended up spotting five or six whales! The guide told us whale facts during the ride. We sailed out further into the sea and would sort of keep place until a whale was spotted and then we’d go towards it and watch it breech. We truly appreciated gentle giants for keeping us updated and being truthful about the conditions. They give you clothes that keep you warm and dry as well! I’d recommend gloves if you have them.

      Magic sea
We went into the sea on a zodiac, very comfortable with the warm and waterproof suits. The biologist was explaining a lot of things about these amazing animals while the captain was finding them and following without disturbing. We were lucky enough to see a good number of humpbacks and their tales and I hope I can repeat and see them again soon with Gentle Giants.

      Whale watching wichtig Gentle Giants
We did the GG2 Safari last year and this year again! Last year we saw jumping humpbacks, this year about 6 different humpbacks, dolphins, puffins...At both tours we learnt a lot about sealife, felt totally safe and had tears of joy in our eyes! Thanks to this gentle giants . Thank you " Gentle Giant"! We will be back, most certainly! Uwe and Andrea

      Awesome day for viewing whales!
We saw whales just breaking the surface of the water at least 25 times! One time a whale just brushing the bow of our boat! Simply amazing!

If I could give this a higher rating I definitely would! We went about a week ago and it did not disappoint. For June it was definitely freezing cold but we lucked out and got perfect weather (the day before it snowed). Seeing the puffins was just an incredible experience (please note they are a bit afraid of the boat so you won't get super close). Then we drove around looking for whales. There was like 15-20 min where I got sad that we wouldn't see any but then out of nowhere 2 humpbacks (a baby and a mom or dad) were spotted. After we saw dolphins and a few more whales. Koen our guide (I honestly forget his name but I remembered he mentioned something about being from the Netherlands) was super kind and informative, he even thanked me after for being so excited about seeing the animals (not sure why others werent freaking out as much because it was just so cool to see whales in nature vs seaworld depressed).

I definitely recommend splurging and getting the rib boat ticker, we flew by every other boat and were able to get to the whales and see so much more than everyone else. Bring gloves, warm socks and shoes & overall just a great attitude. Also bring a good camera (and not your iphone because I can promise your pictures wont be that great if the whale is 30-50 ft away).

WOW! Thank you for your fantastic review and sharing your detailed experience! It makes us very happy to see that you "LOVED IT" and saw humpbacks, dolphins and puffins on the tour. Thanks for kind words towards the guide on board. It can indeed be cold so good tip to bring warm extra clothes as you mention. Thanks and best regards, Daniel

We are a family of four with two kids (13 and almost 8 years old) who went on the Big Whale Safari and Puffins RIB boat tour.
On beforehand we were much in doubt about choosing the RIB boat or the traditional boat, mostly because our youngest is almost 8 years old and 130 centimeters long and thus on the edge of the Gentle Giants minimum requirement of 7 years old/140 centimeters. It is not very clear if the requirement is "AND" or "OR". Hence we asked and were told it would be OK if the weather was calm.
Luckily, the weather was calm and we were clear to go. On the boat the size requirement played a role since my daughter could not reach the floor from the seat. Hence we were asked to move to the very back of the boat (fortunately we were able to get one row distance to a big guy who would otherwise have blocked most of our view).
Gentle Giants do a really good job taking care of the whales (not getting too close, not following the same whale too long and not approaching the whale in an aggressive way) and our guide provided lots of interesting information. We first passed Puffin Island which is true to its name. There are plenty of puffins which are fun and fascinating to watch. Soon after we spotted a couple of dolphins and then started searching for a whale. In total we saw about 10 dolphins and 4 different humpback whales, but no other species of big whales.
We are still unsure if we made the right choice of tour. The RIB boat is fast and thus increases the chances of seeing more different whales. However, it is also flat so it is only possible to see the part of the whale which is above the surface of the water. A traditional boat maybe gives a better view. There is also a substantial price difference. In theory, the RIB boat could get closer to the whales, but luckily Gentle Giants value the well-being of the whales and do not go closer in the RIB boats than the traditional boats.
All in all, the adults had a great tour while the children had an average experience. Even though they are very interested in animal life, I have to be honest and say they got slightly bored towards the end of the tour. If/when we are going whale watching again we will try the traditional boat to see if that works better with children and perhaps gives a better view of the whales.
While we were very happy to experience the care for the well-being of whales, we were less impressed with the Covid precautions. All passengers were asked to spray their own floatation suit after use. This by itself was no problem, but I would feel safer knowing that disinfection was done by responsible staff rather than the last guest who used the suit.

Dear Nielsen7, thank you very much for your thorough feedback! It is good to see that all in all, you and your family enjoyed the experience. The well-being of the whales is very important and we try our best to follow the Code of Conduct as set by the Icelandic Whale Watching Association. Reggarding the COVID-19 precautions, we have taken several measures for the safety of our passengers and crew to limit the spread of the virus as recommended by local authorities. We are monitoring the status constantly as the situation is rapidly changing. Thank you for your feedback on this. Best regards, Daniel

From beginning to end the whole trip was flawless. The young lady who was our guide was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. She helped everyone into their gear and rather than just handing stuff out gave little tips on how to make the trip more comfortable.

Although late in the Puffin season we still got to see lots of them. As for whales we were lucky enough to see and follow two, a Minky and Humpback. The guide was good enough to move my young kids round the boat so that they didn't get splashed too much when the boat was travelling around the bay.As the trip stayed in the bay the sea wasn't too choppy even though it was quite windy.

The advantage of being in the rib boats was their speed. As soon as a whale was spotted the boat could race over. The larger more typical sailing boats are much slower so there is the risk by the time these have caught up the whale has dived back down again.

It's better to pay that little bit extra and go in the rib boats as it gives you more chance of seeing the whales up close.

My kids were a little unsure and nervous before going out by the end they loved it.

It would have been nice to see a few more different species though clearly it all dependent on what is out there in the forst place, and at least we got to see some in their natural habitat..

I have no problem not seeing a single creature that lived beneath the waves, but I do think these operators abused their confidence in taking us out. We were offered the 21:30 tour; seemed late but we were assured it should still be a good time to go out. As we were staying 75 minutes away in Akireyri, we called twice more to make sure the weather was not too poor to go out; both times we were assured all would be fine. We bundled up in 5-6 layers and they provided heavy overalls and a rain slicker, after which we roared out after a quick safety demo. Within minutes, it became apparent that this might be ill fated. We did see puffins on the ride out, although we had to stay out so far from the island it was impossible to make out much. Then the real misery started; we punched around in the rain and slop of 4-6’ seas for 2 more hours; the only ones more miserable than the 4 of us was the unfortunate young man behind me who upchucked from about 30 in until we touched the dock at 12:01 am. We almost came in 45 min earlier, but even though our tour naturalist had vocally given up, clearly somebody at headquarters was not having us come in completely skunked, at least not early! So they turned us around to try to see minke whales closer to shore; still in whitecaps and driving rain, so we indeed did return completely empty handed and drenched. No hot chocolate or cookies for us; vouchers would not be available until 9 am the next day if we “wished to try again”. I do think this crap weather could have lead to recommendations to not go out; even my crappy Apple Weather predicted this was not the kind of weather anyone should be out in. I really don’t think the tour operators had any illusion we would see anything, and should have offered us something different than this miserable experience

Very thankful for the chance to see some humpbacks and dolphins in the wild! We went for the 19:00 tour, which we felt was right as we didn't see many other boats out on the water. We saw two humpbacks and a group of maybe 6-10 white-beaked dolphins! The guides were knowledgeable and were definitely on the lookout for more. We got here too late in the season to see puffins, but the whales and dolphins made it well worth it. You'll be bundled up in provided suits, but still bring layers as these jumpsuits are more for wind protection as you will go fast!!

There are fewer whales in the waters now in general as water temperatures rise, so be sure to set your expectations accordingly. You have a very high chance of seeing whales, but if you are expecting to see a very high number of whales, you might be disappointed. Humpbacks also are solitary creatures, which is another reason why we only saw a few. I thought it was a blast of a time!!

Thank you for joining our tour and leaving us a review! I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour and saw both whales and dolphins! On our whale watching excursions we are dealing with wild animals out in pure and unspoilt nature. Whales come here to Skjálfandi Bay to feed mainly on plankton and krill, which makes sightings dependant on the food status. Sometimes the bay is rich of food, which makes more whales choose to visit the bay. Sometimes there is less food, which makes fewer or no whales come into the bay. The situation can change very fast. Whales come and go and no two tours are ever the same even on the same day. Every tour is a complete new adventure, even for the crew onboard. Most of the baleen whales are indeed solitary animals so we usually only have a few in the area. Best regards, Aleks

This is the way to see the whales and the Puffins! It was a short ride to reach Puffin Island where there were thousands and thousands of Puffins. Our guide was knowledgeable and told us what we needed to know about them. Than we went looking for whales. After only 10-15 minutes we spotted our first Minke whale and in just a few minutes more we were onto the first of several Humpbacks. We got very close to some of them including a pair of them. We even felt the spray from one of them. Highly recommend the Whale Safari and Puffins tour!

When they say it's a 98% chance of seeing whales they don't lie. We had an amazing experience with Gentle Giants. They offered the rib boat experience and it is the ultimate experience. You can truly chase the whales to where they are. Any experience is worth it but personally being on the smaller rib boats. It's worth the extra if you can spare it :)

It was a phenomenal experience seeing these beautiful creatures in the wild. Our guide Henrik and driver Addi made our experience one of a kind. If you get these two you are in for an amazing trip. You can't predict nature , but they made our experience amazing. Thank you!

Reading some reviews we were a bit skeptic that in a cloudy day we could see anything.
    But boy were we wrong!
We saw whales at least 6-8 times, each time from just a few meters.
We also saw many dolphins that we did not expect to see.
Puffins were thousands. A bit far, but still nice to see.
You absolutely MUST take the small boat tour, the one that includes puffin island because the small boat is super fast and can reach whales in a few seconds and you can stay way closer than with the bigger and slower boat.
It was cold but the equipment given to us was perfect.
The italian guide was a plus, super friendly!
    100% would recommend.

Booked the last GG2 Tour of the day. The sea was rough, there were no animals to see. Okay, that's nature. What should not be nature is a guide who isn't guiding. Nacho (his name) appeared stressed, listless and only briefly explained what the safety precautions were. He was nearly silent for the rest of the tour and left the customers alone with their expensive booked tour which was not crowned with success. Other than brief information that whales are mammals, there were no interesting things he said. It seemed as if he didn't feel like it and unfortunately made it by far the worst experience I've had with the provider so far. Would recommend the provider, but not the guide.

There were four of us who had booked the trip from home, and had been looking forward to getting out on the North Atlantic to see whales. Our Portuguese guide Diana was fantastic and the captain of the rib boat was very skilled and present and responsive to our sightings. We saw both puffins and whales, so in our eyes the trip was an absolute success. Gentle Giants get my/our warmest recommendation, and if you are in Húsavik, a trip with them is an absolute must.

Thank you very much for this amazing review. Diana and the captain will be thrilled to know you spend such a good time on board with them seeing the whales and puffins. Thank you kindly for this beautiful recommendation. All the best, Joséphine.
