- kassklm0 contributionsWhale watchingGreat tour with very educated staff. Did seem like a lot of the tour was travel time, but there are beautiful sights to go along with it. We were able to see humpbacks and Minke whales and they were gorgeous..you could tell how respectful and educated the staff were about protecting wildlife, I really appreciated this. The day we went we barely had to leave the “bay” area, so it was very calm. But, the tour guide said sometimes it is rough out so keep Gravol in mind if you choose to go on the trip. Another addition was the warm floater suits you were provided with which we really loved! Recommend warm footwear (not running shoes). If you get cold there is a nice inside seating area that you can still sit in and enjoy the view. I wore enough clothing I could stay outside and enjoy the wildlife/birdlife. Hot chocolate is offered with a few.Written January 22, 2019

- Barry H0 contributionsThe whales put on quite a performanceLucky for us the trip was in great sunny weather (although it was chilly of course) showing off the beautiful scenery as we travelled towards the sea in search of whales. We were not disappointed. The boat got us amongst the humpbacks within the first hour. We saw several of them sometimes in pairs and on occasion were very close to them. One actually jumped out of the water putting on a spectacular splash. Several gave a fantastic view of their tails as they deep-dived. Three hours passed in a flash. An unforgettable experience.Written October 21, 2018
- Sarahnewcastleuk0 contributionsWaste of money and timeWe spent most of our time in between 2 whales and 1 by itself , the captain wouldn’t commit and we watched in envy the other boats and tour groups enjoying close up encounter of the whales, this tour was most expensive and without doubt the worse of the lotWritten September 4, 2018
- drjg20170 contributionsSolo Senior ReturnsI returned exactly one year later to experience again the whales of Akureyri. No disappointment, only more joy. The staff were wonderful, as usual. The especially knowledgeable Jerry was the guide on my extreme whale watch. Water was a little rough that day, but we all were safe and enjoyed the excitement of our adventure with the whales. I highly recommend whale watching while in Akureyri!Written July 28, 2018
- LornaJane860 contributionsSaw lots of humpback whale up close!I went at 9 pm and it was such an amazing experience. It was around 11 when we got back and this was plenty of time. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Most importantly we saw a lot of whales, all of them humpback. There were around 5 swimming around the bay while we were out there and we got very close to them. I also had my nice DSLR camera with me and did not have to worry at all about getting it wet. I'd recommend bringing a dry bag or plastic bag for transit, in case you have choppier conditions than I did. By the way, this company and Elding are exactly the same. I booked with Ambassador, but left from the Elding building.Written July 22, 2018
- Headmaster110 contributionsLong trip but saw some humpbacks! My son and I booked the regular 3 hour tour, not the small fast boat. We ended up having to go pretty far out to the end of the fjord to see whales so we were glad we were on the warmer and more comfortable boat. In the end, we saw two humpback whales so it was worth it. Our guide was really knowledgeable and talkative. We got a 10% discount by mentioning our hotel. A beautiful but long ride. Ask the shop how the whales are running before going out. We did the 2PM tour.Written July 14, 2018
- beach bum in ohio0 contributionsSaw many whales! We took the small boat tour in the evening and ended up being the only two people on that tour. It was 2 hours long and we went out into the fjord to where the whales were swimming. We were moving right along and all of a sudden there were whales everywhere. We actually got to see one of them breach! It was so impressive that it was worthy of National Geographic. Our guide, who was a marine biologist, said that is rare to see. Highly recommend this tour. It’s worth the money for the smaller tour because you can see all sides around the boat, so you don’t miss anything.Written July 10, 2018
- TravelSoloLCM0 contributionsExtremely helpful, went over and above !We had a great experience with the blonde young lady at the Desk , she went over and above to help us try to find a tour that fit our schedule. The pride in the front staff shows the quality of an operation!Written June 6, 2018
- Kaneth253410 contributionsSaw whales, but would prefer different company. My review on FB disappeared.I am writing this review as somehow my original review on their FB page disappeared (They only want good reviews?). I was advertised with the boat, Ambassador, before they updated their boat lists on their website. The actual day we only see the Konsull, described on their website as a former ferry. This contradicts with their information in their 'about' section already such as "...boats custom designed for whale watching" and "...multiple whale watching platforms". We saw whales but it was a tiny boat with pointy head, so the front can only accoummodate 6-8 person, these people will also occupy this area for the whole trip because obviously it is the best spot on the boat. If you can't get those spots, you'll most likely be looking at multiple heads for the whole trip and forget about getting nice photos, so make sure you know which boat you'll get. That day I saw another boat from another company (red color), their boat is a catamaran which means the viewing dock is squared, its equipped with 2 floors/deck in the front and another at the top and another at the back, and goes further out the fjord. That was when I regretted choosing this company. TLDR: Make sure you know which boat you'll get. Don't go with the Konsull, but if you must, make sure you get the limited spots in the front.Written May 14, 2018
- JT H0 contributionsHumpbacks! Nice clean boat tour! Amazing harbor! One of the best excursion we did in Northern Iceland. We were on the 1st boat tour of the season in early May 2017! The staffs are nice and the boat was nice and clean. After about 45min-1hr, we spotted 3 humpbacks around the area! It was a wonderful day. Highly recommended! Great company!Written April 29, 2018

Very low quality tour experience. We did not see any whale or any dolphin but that s not all. The tour is very long (3.5 hours), looks like a ferry trip (no stop, very low interaction, just a non stop full gas loop around an island ) and not interesting (oral comments at the microphone on a old factory and a village but you stay very far from the coast so you don't see anything). For sure it must have been better if we had seen any whale but, anyway, for me it does not worth the very high price as the cruise is not very pleasant. In the end we had a voucher to do it again within 2 years - not sure at all we would do it again even if we had the opportunity to do it.

Dear Antoine P,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, although we're saddened to hear that it didn't meet your expectations.
We regret for not being able to provide you with a satisfactory whale watching experience. We understand that not seeing any whales or dolphins can be disappointing, however it is completely out of our control.
We hope you'll consider giving us another chance in the future, the ticket is valid in Akureyri or Reykjavík.
All the best,

We drove all the way to Akureyri to see the whales. The tour was scheduled at 1pm. We got there at 12:30pm. We were pretty excited about the whale watching and drove on the slippery winter road from Myvan.
As soon as I got into the office, the front desk told me the trip was cancelled because they would only go if there are 8+ people, and there were only 2. He told me he called me and left voicemail the very morning. I put down my U.S. number when I signed up for the tour and changed SIM card when landed in Iceland so I didn't get the message. Neither did I get any email notification.
1. When I booked the trip, there should be a disclaimer that reads "Trip subject to cancellation if customers are 8 or less"
2. I should be contacted as many ways as possible to let me know the tour is cancelled.
3. The trip was cancelled not because of weather or uncontrollable conditions, merely because of company profit concern. This is not how customers should be treated
4. We offered to double the price and meet them in the middle, but the front desk told me the captain was already gone.
The experience is 0 star. Front desk was nice and apologetic, 2 stars for him.

I have mixed reviews of this tour. We did see a whale, as promised, but we literally chased the same whale the entire 3-hour tour. I really expected after we saw it twice or so we would move on and see about finding another. We did not. We saw the same humpback whale breach and dive back down to feed like 10 times. It was cool and I am glad I got to see a whale, but I wished we could have moved on and seen more. I get that they would probably rather guarantee more sightings with the same whale than taking the risk on going out to find more and not, but it would have been more exciting to go see more, to me at least. Also, I really expected it to be a smaller tour and it appeared as though we were combined with another tour company on a much larger boat.

The guide told us alot about the sealife here. Boat was good. They told us there were some blankets, raincoats and overalls, but we found them a bit too late. It was really cold.

It was really disaponting that we saw no whales. We started from Darvik for a better chance to see them with no luck. There were people on second try to see them with no success. I wound't try it again.

Dear Laura T,
Sorry to hear that the tour and services did not meet your expectations. In order to give our passengers a better chance of wildlife spotting, we sometimes offer a FREE transfer to Dalvík. Unfortunately it seems that this time it did not pay off sightings wise.
We cannot control the wildlife in our waters and sightings are out of our control. We do try our very best and cooperate with other boats in the area for optimal chance, but sometimes we're just out of luck..
Hopefully you'll find the time to try again. This is a wildlife tour and therefore sightings are unpredictable and vary from tour to tour.
All the best,

Dear S9808JPmargaretd,
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Sorry that you were unable to hear the tour guide's commentary due to speaker issues. We'll be sure to look into that.
We do try and make everyone as comfortable as possible, especially when we have large groups from the cruise ships on board. Our team is very experienced when it comes to how approaching the wildlife and how to properly position the boat so that everyone can see. Sorry if this was not the case here - we do try our very best and will have a word with the crew regarding future tours.
Hopefully you managed to spot some whales and enjoy the ride despite everything.
All the best,

We took a morning excursion on a RIB boat and were not disappointed. The staff were very accommodating. We had great weather, and the fjord was very calm. We first saw a minke whale at some distance. But pretty quickly came across a pair of humpbacks. I was surprised at how close they came to the boat as they fed – they didn’t seem too worried about us. Impressive creatures and a wonderful experience.
