AWESOME

Awesome experience. I had wanted to see whales all my life and within the first five minutes after departing from Hjalteyri we saw the first sprout.
In two hours we saw plenty of big whales, tales getting into the sea, some big jumps and splashes in the distances and some dolphins as well. Christian the guide and Christian the captain did a very nice job!

We were meant to do the tour from Husavik but due to the strong wings and bad sea they changed it to Hjalteyri. Best decision ever.. the fjord is narrower so you have less wind, smaller waves and smaller place to look for the whales.

Dear Èric, Thank you very much for sharing your experience you had with us with this wonderful review. Sounds like you had quite the first experience! There are really no words to describe the feeling of seeing these gentle giants up close. "The Christians" have been with us for many years and are, like all our crew members, very passionate about their job - thank you for the compliments to them, I will make sure they hear about it! Hjalteyri is simply a wonderful place, and I'm very happy that you were able to relocate due to bad sea conditions in Húsavík! Thank you again for your kind words, I hope to see you back someday! Quite a good experience and really professional approach from the crew
Sep 2021
Me and my friends originally wanted to go whale watching from Húsavik but North Sailing contacted us via email and phone to let us know that the weather conditions were not good in Húsavik for whale watching and offerend multiple tour options in Hjalteyri instead. They also said that the chances to see the whales are much better than in Húsavik. As we were travelling around the island we didn't really have much flexibility as we had accomodation in different place almost everyday but North Sailing were really nice about all this and when our plan changed because of weather and car issues they were able to meet our needs and book us a tour that suits our plan the best. So I would give them 5/5 for the communication, planning and helping us to pick a tour so we have good chance to see the whales.
As for the tour itself there were several things - they were distributing the warm overalls on the ship and I don't know if they didn't have enough or there were more people on the tour than usual but some of the overalls were visibly more used than the others as they had to bring extra from below the ship. Mine was way too small actually so I couldn't zip it all the way up but I found out after putting it on and there weren't any extra left. It was also torn on some places so I would probably suggest to replace some overalls and invest in new ones as one really needs them to keep warm.
The crew on the ship was really nice and there were sharing a lot of interesting facts about the area, local birds and the whales. After we boarded the ship thez informed us that the chance to see the whales is actually 50/50 as they are wild animals but they will try their best to find some. We were able to see 2 humpback whales from quite afar. There were several other ships in the area and we were a bit far in the fjord so the waves were really big and we kind of had to chase the whales around to see them better as the crew couldn't tell where they will appear next after their dive. Several people got sick but I don't really belive it was the crew fault although they could have been gentler when handling the boat, turning it around and going trough the waves. So if you know that waves don't do you good then I would suggest to go much earlier than mid to late September as there is a chance that the whales will be more inside the fjord where the waves are calmer.
When we were going back to the port they were giving out hot chocolate and cinnamon buns. You could tell that the hot chocolate was more of a cocoa as the taste was little bit watery and not really a chocolate. The cinnamon buns looked and tasted a bit cheap but still both of those things were really nice and you could have extra cup of chocolate or cinnamon bun if you wanted to.
Overall I would say that the company is very professional and offers good service so I would choose them again. Also as a bonus you can also have discount in several places in Húsavik and Hjaleyri with the tour ticket. :)

Amazing whale watching, great organisation and crew
A strong recommendation for all Iceland visitors! We originally booked whale watching from Husavik, as that is supposedly the best rated place, with highest chance of seeing whales, but the company emailed us a day or two in advance with information that more whales have been spotted in Hjalteryi for the past few days and that we can just change to that location if we want to (they are not far apart). And we did, and we were so lucky, we saw a few humpback whales, and two actually passed beneath our boat. A marine biologist told us a lot about whales while we were looking for them. We were also given warm suits for the whole duration of sailing, which kept us warm, and we even got hot chocolate and cinnamon buns while sailing back to the port. It was just amazing!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a wonderful review. I'm pleased to read that you appreciated our extra effort to reschedule your reservation in order for you to have a better chance of good whale sightings :) It sure sounds like it was worth it - it's great to hear that you were so lucky with the sightings and that you experiences a close encounter with the whales. Thank you for the kind words about our complimentary gear and refreshments, I hope we'll have the pleasure to welcome you on board with us again in the future. Kind regards, Þórný

Horrible experience
Sep 2019 • Couples
This definitely rates as one of the worst experiences of my life. The conduct was highly unprofessional. Right from the disbursement of overalls and raincoats, which were essentially just lying around in a tin shed with no one to even assist with the sizes to the way the staff conducted themselves on the boat, it was highly disappointing. And to top it all we ended up not sighting a single whale or for that matter any species of marine life. The weather was bad and the tour company should have cancelled the tour and refunded the ticket. Rather they overloaded their boat and gave the customers an experience that would leave them in pain and disgust. The cinnamon bun was horrible and the hot chocolate was essentially hot water with a spoon of chocolate in it. I would warn anyone to opt for North Sailing's tour in the future. Please stay away and rather keep yourself safe and save your money.

Wow!
We loved our whale-watching trip! The crew provided survival suits and rain jackets and had appropriate sizes for our kids (6y & 10y). We felt very safe on the boat and despite somewhat rough seas the kids were very comfortable. We had great close-up views of 4 humpback whales! Highly recommended for families.

Sailing from the small village of Hjalteyri this was a brilliant afternoon’s whale watching. The boat was small but comfortable and our tour leader very friendly and informative. We saw several whales and were in awe both of them and the amazing scenery. On the way back we were given hot chocolate and cinnamon buns which were delicious.

Well done tour
North Sailing contacted us the day before our tour to move us to a ship out of Hjalteyri instead of Husavik which was having bad weather. I was happy not to deal with bad weather! The boat was cool, the weather perfect, and we got to see one (apparently quite rare) Minke whale breach a couple of times. Of course we would have liked to see more but they can’t control the amazing whales. The seas got rough when we turned to the North and I was glad I had taken Dramamine (though sleepy). Our guide Sara was great and at the end of a quite cold ride we were treated to cinnamon roles and hot chocolate. It was a cool experience.
