Kätkävaara Nature Path

By Lapland Welcome
Breath-taking sceneries! Kätkävaara is located between Rovaniemi and Kemi, close to the Pisavaara Strict Nature Reserve which is the strictest protected of all large nature reservations in Europe. The nature in the Kätkävaara region is unbelievably beautiful and diverse. Indeed, Kätkävaara can easily be called a nature-lover’s paradise with plenty of wild animals and birds living in the area.

        'it is forbidden by law'
We booked the longest tour 'further into the wilderness' which requires participants to have snowmobiling driving experience. Although we would give our guide four stars for trying really hard to make us happy in any way he could. Still the review has only two stars, because just after the right the start after driving with the green key for a bit (which has a speed limiter and is normal practice also at the other companies to evaluate driving skills) we were told that although we were good drivers that tourists can only drive with the green key as it 'is forbidden by law' to let them drive with the grey key. Actually we did only see less than half of the 'further into the wilderness' compared to the tours we had done before (since we liked it so much, this was our third full day snowmobiling) and the guides quickly changed keys. Since they claim that it is forbidden by law for tourists to drive normal speed we would recommend to check carefully before booking with them or go somewhere else if speed >30km/hr is your thing. Anything else is just fine, good clothing provided, helpful guide, etc.

Pleasant tour with a very friendly guide
We booked this activity ad hoc as we wanted to take advantage of the good weather and hoped to see aurora. Our guide Kamila met us in the office and took care of us as well as other participants. She then drove us to quite remote place outside Rovaniemi, making a few stops on the way and checking for auroras. we then arrived to a place with tepee where Kamila made fire and we were had some barbeque (vegetarian option was available for us). We loved hot blueberry juice. Unfortunately we were not lucky to see aurora but Kamila looked after us very well and did everything to make our time as pleasant as possible.

        Highly recommended!!
My friend and I joined this Aurora-Northern Lighs Trip Photographing Tour on 17th February 2024. We were so lucky we were able to see and witness the spectacular and magical Aurora Borealis! Thank you very much! Our tour guide Aneeq was very nice and accommodating. He made sure that we keep warm and provided our snacks. We had the best hot blueberry juice ever! He’s also very knowledgeable, gave us infos about the tour. If ever we’d come back to Rovaniemi, I’d definitely book tours with you again! I even told my friends about Lapland Welcome, if they would go to Rovaniemi. Excellent!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

Fantastic Hotel in an Amazing setting
The hotel looks exceptional and it truly is a unique experience. We arrived in the afternoon & reception holds onto your luggage. As day visitors will be walking through the rooms to see the various cultures you don't take your belongings there until you are ready to sleep. At that point everything is stored in a nearby warm locker area. The grounds around are fantastic. It starts with some young reindeer to feed, then a series of ice art installations, & a frozen lake where you can ride snowmobiles, or go hiking. We booked that Sauna package, which although it seemed pricey at the time turned out to easily be worth the money. It starts with a traditional Finnish sauna, followed by the steam rooms that are formed entirely of ice, before retiring to a private hot tub in a snowy area. The is perfectly matched with a bottle of champagne! The Ice Bar seemed like a novelty for people visiting for a few hours, but I would 100% recommend the Ice restaurant if you are staying or have time to dine. Normally at themed hotels you temper expectations on quality, but the dishes we were served were outstanding, plus we were dining in a very unique setting! Aftwerwards the Kota bar is a warm area where you can pass the night looking out, beside a warm open fire. We stayed in one of the inside ice rooms and it was as COLD as you'd expect! The staff provide you with everything you need to stay warm during the night which works perfectly, you just do not want to too exposed outside your sleeping bags.

magic night watching the aurora in the forest
Our guide, Maris, took us out for a private tour to watch the northern lights. we had a nice evening around the fire in the private cabin in the first, with barbecue and hot blueberry juice, and then the aurora started. it was a magical night that we will never forget.

Avoid this company at all costs
What an adventure. This tourist trap is all talk but no results. People have seen more Northern light in the santa clause village that day than your poorly situated location. Winning an award 4 years ago doesnt mean anything today… your standards you are claiming to be the best didn’t show itself on our journey. These people claim to be professionals who also claims that they would explain anything about the stars and other topics that are related to the northern lights. However, all we got is a little explanation of reindeers and ear cut markings and how happy the Finnish people are in this country. What a complete joke this organisation. We understand that the Aurora is a natural phenomenon but we were suppose to go hunting for it and move up North? We went more south straying away from the light, going to a place that is owned by the company. How is this “chasing” and “hunting” the light? Complete scam I would say. Also, the guide we got assigned to was also a mute and stayed complete silent about the trip. He didn’t state what the plan was and suddenly we were in the middle of nowhere telling us to get out. We had the impressing that he was about to do something to us. No actual storytelling or explanation. We had to ask what the actual plan was. In the end, we wasted 100 euros no refund for some cheap chicken nuggets - hotdogs, blue berry syrop juice and 5 hours of our time. These so called professionals should atleast have some forecast and add a partial refund or anything. We also got a “professional” photoshoot with no aurora in the back, making it seem like this is some sort of consolation price. So sad.

        Hampered by poor organisation.
Guides do a good job but organisation is poor. Changes in timing of activities are not advised in advance, we had some start hours later than we were advised and others an hour or two early. The activities are good, although they are sometimes hampered by poor or wrong equipment being supplied. Guides do a good job to make things work as well as possible.

        Horrible experience with Welcome Lapland
I had a horrible experience with welcome Lapland travel agency We booked a tour of 1 hr reindeer ride with them instead they gave us 10 min reindeer ride & charged ₹10 k for it.. When we complain the manager didn't have a courtesy to come and talk with us instead he told his employee that he won't come & talk.. We also Booked Santa Claus village tour with him in that reindeer ride was included but he didn't get it as well.. I would suggest not to trust d manager.

        Snowmobile into the Lapland wilderness
Overall, this was a great experience as we snowmobiled deeper into the wilderness at night and away from the city lights. Our guide, David, was punctual at picking us up at our hotel. Had great conversations and felt very welcome. Although we didn’t get to see the Northern lights due to poor weather, we still had a great time. The experience would’ve been better if the tour company had better communication. We sent messages to two different phone numbers but no reply. We sent an email as instructed by one of the auto-reply numbers but didn’t get a response. We could only confirm pickup point after getting help from our hotel reception calling the number directly.

Highly recommended for tours in Lapland Rovaniemi!
A little late to write this review, however have to write as they deserve it. We booked the entire week with them, including a wonderful stay at their Katkavaara hotel. The owner, the office employees and all the guides were really good, professional and friendly. We enjoyed a lot of activities such as Snowshoe hike, ice-fishing, northern lights tours, frozen waterfall hike, icebreaker cruise, arctic circle (Santa clause village) and snowmobile. All of them were organised really well. Stay at Katkavaara hotel was extremely peaceful. The owner of the hotel (who is also the Chef there) cooked some amazing food also considering special vegetarian diet request for my wife. All in all, highly recommended if you are looking for enjoying the Lapland at it's best!! Thank you.

Nice experience (husky-sledding activity), worth to go for activities with them
We booked our husky-sledding with them. They have their office in Rovaniemi center and provide a proper clothing for the adventure. Tha lady helped each of us to dress properly, and brought us to the husky farm. (-17 C was on that day, but we did not feel cold). However it was a self-driving experience, the driver's hands can get really cold, we recommend t buy/ask for hand warmer pads, which really saved my husband's hands. This was not a mass-tourism experience, we were in a smaller group (approx 30 ppl). Highly recommended to book activities with them instead of Apukka resort.

        Learning to ski dreadfully!
Our experience wasn’t great at all but it was all our fault! We have never skied before ever but our guide was very patient with us but when you have fallen so many times, it’s time to call it quits! We couldn’t fault our guide and even met his lovely wife, they made our experience worthwhile!
