Itinerary
- Egnatia 78, Thessaloniki 546 24, GreeceAristotelous square and Egnatia square in front of Statue of Eleftherios Venizelos at 08:00
- 1We reach Meteora at around 12:30p.m; this fascinating complex of huge steep rocks of pennant, arising close to the first elevations of the longest sierra in Greece, Pindos (the “spine” of Greece). We visit two of the six operating Holy Monasteries depending on the schedule of each one. During our visits to the monasteries we make a short stop to admire the stunning panoramic view of the Holy Monasteries from up high and capture the mystique of the landscape. The wild unapproachable area with the sandstones of more than 65 millions years old is majestic and at the same time unearthly and divine as until today their origin cannot be explained. Next, we enjoy our greek traditional lunch break in Kastraki, at Kalampaka area, against the view of the astonishing Meteora. We depart to Thessaloniki at around 15:30p.m and we have a last stop for 20΄ for coffee and rest. We are back at about 19:00p.m, making the same stops where we started from.

Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 507steven0 contributionsGreat balanced itinerary to see lots of things, but without all the rush.We had a spare day whilst in Greece auditing, so we made the decision to book an excursion in advance so that we could maximise out time. The joining instructions were clear, and the main square had two different trips meeting up, but the guides clearly directed you to the correct one. The trip to Dion & Mt Olympus was a very good and well balanced trip with enough time to get a small flavour of the area, without making it too rushed. We had the trip to the Waterfall, Dion Ruins, Mt Olympus visitor centre, and Litichoro refuge up in the foothills before a small hike in the forest. We even had a few moments to do a collective micro-meditation focusing on the here and now - centring on the sounds of the waterfall! Very therapeutic.Written March 21, 2025
- JuliaVolokh0 contributionsNice trip but not enough of OlympusThe trip was overall very nice, the guides were lovely and shared a lot of information about the areas we visited and the mountain in general. But we barely got to see the mountain, which seems like missing the point a bit. The start at the waterfall was great, Dion Archaeological Park was not as impressive as expected but we were expecting that the next part, as it says right here in the description: "Next, visit Mt. Olympus, the home of the gods in Greek mythology, and walk in the Epinea Gorge to absorb the scenery surrounding the peak..." For some reason the course of the trip was changed. We never got to the Epinea Gorge which online looks like a gorgeous place. The guide explained that they decided to take us to another spot that should be better. We were taken to a hike in a woods, which again was nice enough but we kept expecting to get to some sort of a viewpoint, it never happened as we just kept walking in the woods with only naked trees around us and after a long walk the guide said that we're heading back taking the very same route that we just walked. I'll be honest, it was boring and pointless, we could take that hike pretty much anywhere. I don't understand why we were taken to this location instead of all the impressive viewpoints that we could see in the same area (I checked in Google and even in past reviews here). We took this trip because we wanted to see the unique views of Mount Olympus, we barely got a glimpse of it. I believe that the changes made in the last part of this trip make no sense and waste the time that could be spent in places such as the Epinea Gorge for example.Written March 15, 2025

- RetSmog0 contributionsExcellent introduction to local tastes and markets.Constantine (Megas) was an excellent guide. Gave some interesting information and shared the tastes of her home town. Don't eat too much in the morning before you take this tour, there's plenty to eat on this tour. This is a nice relaxed stroll around the markets so most people would manage it easily. Amazing that there are so many markets so close together. Well worth the time spent.Written October 30, 2024
- RetSmog0 contributionsNot to be missedSuperb exhibition at the Royal Tomb. All in all a busy day with 2 museums plus the Royal Tomb, and the option to walk 15mins uphill to the site of the Royal Palace. Experienced and knowledgeable guide leads you thru Hellenic history and sets you up for the site visits.Written October 29, 2024
- columela0 contributionsLooking close at historyThis tour has been probably the highlight of my trip to Thessaloniki this year. The tour allows you to visit the ruins of Pella and Aigai, plus the archeological museums and the Royal tombs of Macedon. It takes around 8 hours. Our guide for the day, Mr Lazarus, was very approachable, had a sense of humor and gave us quite detailed explanations to help us place the findings in the right historical context. The time allowed to see the ruins and museums was adequate for us. I would have liked 10 minutes more in Pella but it was enough to see most of the place. Even if you are not keen on ruins the royal tombs of Macedon are breathtaking. Only comparable to Tutankhamen tomb in Egypt IMO. We had lunch in a nice, simple taverna which was inexpensive and willing to serve quickly. I learnt a lot, and it was a great companion to the visit to the archeological Museum in Thessaloniki .Written October 27, 2024
- W6958XMmichelleh0 contributionsPellas & VerginaWe really enjoyed our day out to Pellas & Vergina. The guide was really knowledgeable, the museums and sites very impressive and a comfortable and easy journey. We would have liked about 45 minutes more in Vergina for a late lunch, as we didn't have enough time to eat as there was so much to see! I will definitely be back to try some other tours, as the staff are friendly and passionate about their country, and the tours well organised. Great day out.Written October 24, 2024

A trip to Meteora is definitely a must if you are in Greece! The trip from Thessaloniki may have taken 3.5 hours there and 3.5 hours back, but what was hidden at the finish line was breathtaking! Meteora exceeded my expectations from the photos, as this magical place is even more fascinating in person. The experience you take away from this place is indescribable and I definitely recommend everyone to take this trip with Ammon Express. Our very nice and sympathetic guide Eleni told us the history not only about Meteora, but also about Thessaloniki and all the important places we passed along the way. She was willing to give advice, take pictures and was a very pleasant guide. The bus driver, Ilias, was a real pro, taking us safely up the serpentines and then driving us back to Thessaloniki in peace. I will take away an experience of a lifetime from this trip and would definitely recommend it to others!

Even thought the weather was full of clouds, the trip was really enjoying. Everything went as planned.
I would suggest the visitors to buy something for food before leaving Thessaloniki since the restaurant that is available for launch is pricey (not many available this time of year).
Would definitely go again soon, when there would be less clouds.

From start to finish this was a brilliant experience. It was easy to book online. The company was easy to contact and responded quickly to queries. The email confirmation had all the information you needed with detailed itinerary for the day information about what was and what wasn't included in the tour price so there were no surprises. On the day the tour guide Yiannis was on time and again ensured we all knew what to expect from the day ahead. Yiannis throughout the day was attentive polite and was extremely informative. His wealth of knowledge, his passion for the history of his country and his ancestors made the experience so much better. Throughout the day Yiannis made sure everyone was ok and that no one needed anything. I couldn't have asked for a better guide/driver. The tour itself was beautiful with amazing scenery of mountains and monasteries. We visited two beautifully preserved monasteries and stopped for photos at scenic points. We were taken to a lovely local restaurant with great food

The trip itself was great. The only thing we didn't like was the restaurant the tour guide recommended for lunch. It's a tourist trap. First, they didn't have what we ordered and they offered the lumb substitute. They didn't inform us the price would be double. But that's not all. The lamb dish didn't have any meat but instead it eas all grilled fat and skin. It was not edible. Stay away from the recommended restaurant since it paid the cut for the excursion guide and was interested only in ripping tourists off. Go instead to another close by restaurant that is honest and provide good food and service.

This was an excellent tour from start to finish. The guide (Rita) was knowledgeable and engaging and relayed a lot of information. The scenery was spectacular, and everything was on time. I highly recommend this tour. However, it is probably not the tour for children or those with mobility problems. There were 193 steps to enter one of the monasteries and there was some walking involved. Here are several tips: Take a hat if traveling in the summer. The monasteries have a small entry fee which can only be paid in cash (Euros only, no credit cards). Finally, there is a strict dress code, especially for women. Don't wear tank tops, shorts, or pants. You may have to wear some skirts supplied by the tour or you may be refused entry. There is also no photography allowed inside the churches. However. don't miss this unbelievable experience.

Thank you for sharing your experience and providing helpful tips for the Full-Day Trip to Meteora from Thessaloniki. It's great to hear that you found the tour excellent and that Rita, the guide, was knowledgeable and engaging. Your advice about taking a hat, being prepared for the entry fees (cash only), and adhering to the dress code is valuable information for future travelers.
Indeed, Meteora is a stunning destination, but it's important for visitors to be aware of the specific requirements, especially regarding dress code and physical activity. This information can help travelers better prepare for the trip. Your recommendation to not miss this incredible experience is a testament to the beauty of Meteora.
If you have any more details or insights to share, or if you have any questions, please feel free to do so. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

The tour guide and driver were very friendly and an interesting commentary was provided during the drive. The scenery was spectacular. The queues into the monasteries were a little large, however, this was not the fault of the organised tour - we still had enough time to experience the interiors.

Yanni and the driver were excellent. From the time we got on the bus Yanni explained the route, schedule, bathroom breaks etc to us so we knew what to expect.
At each stop Yanni was there for us. We were well taken care of even when we had to climb the hills and stairs to get up to the monasteries. He was always checking on us.
The restaurant we stopped at for lunch was ok. There were other restaurants around and Yanni did say that eating at that restaurant was optional.
The restaurant we stopped at for breaks was also ok. A lot of busses also stopped there so the bathrooms can get crowded and dirty. If the tour operators can find a better place that would be nice.
The hike up to the monasteries required quite a bit of effort and I was actually relieved that the 3rd monastery was closed that day. We still got to see the views from the outside of that monastery and that was good enough for me.

Pleasant but long bus ride with great travel companion who also explains a lot during the outward journey. Meteora itself was also impressively and perfectly explained by our guide. The stopover on the long bus trip (about 3.5 hours from Thessaloniki) is necessary, especially if you are slightly taller and your knees are stuck to the front seat.
The restaurant on the return journey was optimally prepared without great waiting times you received the food.

The Meteora monasteries are stunningly beautiful and really worth a visit. However, we recommend to visit them on your own terms and not with this tour. The staff were very nice and helpful. Unfortunately each stop at Meteora was very short and the schedule felt very tight. We arrived back in Thessaloniki at 6:15 p.m. (45 mins earlier than scheduled), and had spent only about 3.5 hours at the actual site. Of that, less than two hours were free to visit the monasteries and enjoy the views. Of course, the approximate schedule was known when we booked, but for such a distance it would make sense to spend as much daylight as possible at the site and return later in the evening. Our guide's explanations throughout the drive to Meteora were interesting, but hard to understand since the audio quality of the speakers in the bus was poor and the speaker above our seats occasionally stopped working. The van was uncomfortable as the seats were unergonomic and there was very little space per passenger. It was crowded up to the last seat. What ruined the trip for us was the inconsiderate behaviour of other passengers concerning the COVID-rules. We sat in the back of the bus, where many people occasionally or even completely took off their masks, sometimes for hours, even though we kindly asked them to put it on. That made us feel very uncomfortable throughout the tour. Also, vaccination certificates were officially required but never checked.

Hello, I would like to ask what is the transportation vehicle? A bus? And do you require that all passengers show their vaccine card for immunization for Covid? That would be very important in our decision. We are both 68 years old and are quite healthy and active and we want to take the best care of ourselves. Thank you, Εθχαριστώ πολύ,

Hi Cheryl, my boyfriend and me took the trip two weeks ago. Our vehicle was a van/minibus for approximately 15-20 people. Concerning COVID safety, unfortunately I really can't recommend taking the trip. We were never asked to show our vaccination certificates, and neither was anyone else as far as I know. Also we felt quite uncomfortable throughout the bus drives because several passengers around us refused to wear their masks properly (or even at all). Our tour guide didn't really try to enforce the COVID rules either. I'm sorry I can't give you a more positive recommendation for this tour. Meteora itself is really worth a visit. Have a nice holiday!
