- 129ariadnev0 contributionsComfortable trip, but too short for ChaniaThe coach was very comfortable. It was pleasant being picked up just a short walk from our hotel. It was a relief not to have to try and work out how to get to Chania ourselves by public transport. Somehow the buses in Rethymno town don’t seem very frequent and they don’t show the bus stops on board. This really was an easy way of getting to Chania. We enjoyed our time there, but would really have preferred more time in Chania. The guide gave some explanations during the drive, but we had trouble understanding her (even though we are British) when she was speaking English. She was clearly French speaking and has a very strong accent when speaking English. I thought she was talking about goats — turned out she was talking about gorge. On the way to Chania she talked without a microphone, which made it even harder to hear/understand her. Kournas was nice, but not that spectacular. The time there (1 1/2) is really only enough for a meal or for a bit of a swim, not for both. I think it would have been better to have had more time in Chania. Since there were 2 guides, I wonder if it would be an idea to split the group in two, do a short guided walk with each group and then let people have free time and then go back to Rethymno.Written September 17, 2024
- Ricka0060 contributionsBest tour guide ever!!Wow, what an experience!! From booking the tour online all the way through to dropping us off at the hotel, I can safely say it was a breathtaking day. We booked online with absolute ease, and were given the choice to pay upfront or cash on arrival. Cash on arrival easier for us. Organised pickup over WhatsApp, and we're told 5:35am from our hotel. No problem for us, but then we met another couple and they wanted to go so added them on to our booking with ease. Coach pulled up 5 mins early and we were greeted by an absolute gentleman Koustas who welcomed us and once we paid gave us our tickets for the Samaria Gorge national park. Koustas was an outstanding tour guide, speaking multiple languages who made it his mission to make sure everyone understood the days itinerary. Once we arrived at the Gorge he allowed everyone to crack on at their own pace and he stayed with the last people all the way down the Gorge. Once we had reached the end, Koustas came and sat down with us and we had a lengthy chat about home, life in crete over refreshments. We then got on the ferry from Agia Roumelli which is an experience in itself, and Koustas was the last man on board making sure everyone was on. We then sat down and we chatted some more about his Marathons and family. Koustas then out of nowhere gave myself and my new fiance a gift to celebrate our engagement which happened whilst in the Gorge. I don't think I've ever come across a tour guide so welcoming, so happy to make sure everyone else was enjoying themselves. His customer service was something special. As for the tour itself, the Gorge is difficult for any hiker but well worth it.Written September 12, 2024
- 61wannesv0 contributionsGreat service, information and very honest!I had help from July who works there in the mornings. She was the best! Always honest, friendly and cheerful. She helped us find the experiences we were looking for and was a great person to talk to. We did 4 trips in total with CheckinCreta and everything went smooth and was up to expectations. Thanks July!Written September 2, 2024
- Bongbabu0 contributionsBeautiful placeSuper nice place, great food and lots of activities to do. Good bus commute to nearby cities. Better than chania. Don’t call taxi to your accommodation rather take it from the taxi stop, much cheaper.Written August 25, 2024
- Stay399469439950 contributionsStunning places excellent guides just time slots could be better.Excellent trip with the only downside being the timing. Chania was a beautiful place but I had heard from today's tour guide and another I went on about a traditional lamb dish to try when we get to the lake (Antichiristo is the pronunciation but not the spelling) this was indeed excellent. One of the best things I tasted in Crete but the 90 minutes is not enough time to enjoy the food and the lake properly. It's one or the other wich is a shame because the food was good but the lake is stunning and I'd have loved to take a boat out too. Tour guide Kevin and bus driver Manoles. Where spot on throughout the trip.Written June 8, 2024
- Stay399469439950 contributionsWell worth it with friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. The guide was excellent I think her name was Edit. She was personable friendly and knowledgeable. The Bus driver Manoles (parden any bad spelling) was also spot on. Only downside I'd say was there was a bit too much time at the museums etc. We had an hour for what realistically took 15/20 min unless you a reading absolutely everything. Wich only a few do.Written June 8, 2024
- elainecarpinopet20180 contributionsChallenging and beautiful. Guide was fun and helpful. It is a long and challenging hike. Wear sunscreen, good hiking shoes and layered clothing. Hiking poles are very helpful. There is still another mile or 2 after you leave the park to walk to the boat. Very cute little town.Written May 18, 2024
- michellemG3586TU0 contributionsBeautiful water, but bring PatienceI booked this trip after researching Crete online for things to do and saw this tour. I booked the tour for the absolutely beautiful water and it did not disappoint. However, we spent around 8 hrs time in various types of transportation and then maybe 3 hours on the beaches. Once we did get to Gramvousa it was an obstacle course just getting over all the rocks to get to the water from the ship and the small beach area was very rocky and dirty, not sandy. Balos beach was better and definitely easier to get in and out of the water. I would definitely recommend that if you book this tour you bring water shoes, large towels and a lot of water and food, unless you want to spend a bunch more on the ferry.Written October 9, 2023
- michaelyK9792IL0 contributionsOne of the most intense amusement parks in Europe!Wonderful Excellent attractions for teenagers and children, an excellent show and a beautiful design approach to the park. The customer support responded very kindly and professionally to our requests for changing tickets. Having visited so many parks in Europe, America and Asia, I would like to emphasize that the attractions in this park are not inferior to any of them. This park emphasizes its style more in atruction style than in show.Written October 3, 2023

- IamZoi20170 contributionsNice , nothing to specialThe boat ride was nice , nice food to. The beach is nice but nothing special. It is more a instagram picture taking place then a swimming beach. The water is shallow, and during the weekend is just to crowded. So if you are visiting go on a smaller boat at least 3h on the beach, and go on a weekday.Written September 4, 2023
- B4766VFmmm0 contributionsThe real history of Crete - thanks :)We saw beautifull places but the most important for us, was the local guide "chrisa" because she explain very well the story for the monastery, the cave and the other places. Also, we went and balos but the 5 stars for this trip.Written August 19, 2023
- lifeiswhaty0umakeit0 contributionsAn amazing day at Preveli BeachAn amazing trip to see the sights of Preveli Palm Beach. A glorious day, the hottest on our holiday which brought out the finest in the sights. We were picked up from outside our hotel and driven through the gorge down to the beach to be picked up by a private boat and taken to Preveli beach. Three hours to explore the sights then back on the boat and back to another beach. Visited a taverna and had a nice meal. The guide was excellent! The boat was extra and we booked the rough our hotel but direct is cheaper. 10Euros for the boat. An amazing experience!Written August 17, 2023
- SintijaSZ0 contributionswell organised trip to the beachI really enjoyed this trip. Beautiful Trip with some nice places and a really friendly tour guide, who speaks english, french, netherlands and german (and i would guess even more). The driver was always on time and we felt safe for the whole Trip. I can absolutely recommend to visit the Throubi Taverna in Plakias, which was a recommemdation from the guide. It was so delicious and only the food would be worth the Trip!

What a fantastic value for money Tour. Our guide, a larger than life very amiable Irishman called Enda, was incredibly knowledgeable on all things, not only Creta history, but local flora and fauna. He made the tour very interesting and loads of fun.
The tour driver, Manola (sorry if the spelling is incorrect), was very safe and patient. The coach was clean and perfect for the job.
The tour itself was well planned and covered a good cross section of awesome scenery, history and local life and we would recommend it to everyone.

What a fabulous experience today led by Enda and exceptionally driven through the mountains by Maniolis.
Enda really knew his stuff and the day was smattered with interesting stories, histories and anecdotes. It was truly packed with interest. And, though I am now (happily) exhausted, the day was very well paced. There were lots of interesting little stops and some bigger: it was a smorgasbord of interest to suit all. We started out at Amari dam, which is spectacularly beautiful and interesting, not what you'd expect from a dam! The flora and fauna were exceptional and the beauty blew a lot of us away. We saw pairs of buzzards flying on the thermals and an enormous vulture: thrilling to see. Spili was beautiful and a place to go back and explore, as were many places we saw along the way. We ended up in the fabulous compact and bijou Plakias where we ate really well at a super restaurant owned by a lovely lady in her 80s, who was overseeing everything and am sure misses nothing! And if that isn't enough to whet your appetite, the highlight of the day was the visit to the Maravel Botanical Gardens where we had a fascinating personal tour and the hibiscus tea with Greek yogurt which had a wonderful hibiscus flower to eat. I definitely intend to go back there as there is a wealth of knowledge to be learnt there (apparently their products are available online btw 😁: no I don't own shares, honestly!). Oh my goodness, almost forgot to mention St Anthony the Healer/Hermes's cave: fabulous place.
Thank you for a superbly organised, wonderfully interesting day. I absolutely advise you go on this trip. It's outstanding value for money.

They offer plenty of activities. We talked to Anna, who grew up on Crete. She helped us find good activities for us to book for our honeymoon. She is very nice and you could feel that she loves her job which made us feel very happy to be in Rethymno.

Chose 3 tours in total with this excellent little company, this one of South Rethymnon, took in many of the places we had walked to or visited in the 1990’s when we were obviously much younger and had used Plakias as a base, mainly for gorge walking. The trip was excellent and Michael our guide and driver was informative, safe, funny and observed all the COVID protocols we all have to endure these days. It was exactly as described in the brochure and further described by the charming Amelie who sold the various tours from the Checking Creta office

Oh dear.
Been on many of these type of excursions on holidays- this was not one of the better ones. the destinations on this tour are all lovely so nothing wrong there. However the guide was absolutely useless- completely dis-interested and the commentary was pretty much non existent. Coach passed through stunning scenery and villages - guide did not utter a word about any of it. When there was a commentary it was only about the price of olives. As visitors we need to hear about the Cretian way of life in the places we pass through and maybe some history - none of that was provided. Coach passed through a stunning gorge just before we got to Plakias village- did not offer to stop for 5 minutes for photos despite there being a parking spot large enough for a coach to pull into. Very disappointing- could have been so much better with an interested and engaged guide.
