The cruise from Makry Giallos to Koufonisi and back was great and the skipper made us feel welcome and played some great music.
Contrary to what we had understood, it was not possible to land on Koufonisi. The boat stopped off shore and if you wanted to get to land you had to swim (life jackets were available if required).
The beach was gravel and not sand as in the picture.
The trip was disappointing as we had understood we would spend a few hours on the island sitting on the sand or having a walk around.
My partner doesn't swim so remained on the boat while I went snorkeling.
Koufonisi is basically a giant rock in the middle of the sea. The fish you can see in the waters while snorkeling are the same as those off the mainland of Crete. The only 'highlight' was on the return when we sailed past some caves. Not really exciting though.

Rented a boat from small Atherinolakos port, 3 couples in all. Refreshments & sandwiches were handed out. 50 Euro per person a bit steep, but the experience worth it. The island is small and very dry. The beaches long, nice, sandy and with very few people. The sea very beautiful and crystal clear. Crete has many beaches as beautiful. But what a tremendous history ! Inhabited since prehistoric times, fortified for protection even from Crete, 3 miles away. From prehistoric to Roman times its inhabitants fished and processed the valuable purple dye. They also prepared the clothes themselves. When asked, Egypt readily sent soldiers to protect the island. In Roman times this rock had a 1000 spectator theater. Also public baths, etc. About 400 A.D. years the island was raided and everything systematically destroyed. In 1823 pirate Mehmet raided the island with 30 comrades, after committing horrendous crimes against the Poplinou monastery on mainland Crete.
28 Cretans disembarked in the night, surprised the pirates and penned them in the caves. All but three pirates were killed. Something similar was repeated in 1942 ; German and Italian occupiers had established a strong wireless, causing many problems to the British. 100 commandos disembarked in the night and surprised the Germans. The British destroyed everything and took all classified documents. Following their orders, they departed without engaging the defendants that were entrenched in the caves. In 1976 a Greek archaeologist, helped by Yves Cousteau disembarked for a few hours on Koufonisi while the yacht Kalypso had divers nearby. A great storm arose, the Calypso had to get to safety in Crete and barely had time to collect the archaeologist and his assistant. For the next 10 years many discoveries were made ; the island is a Natura 2000 area, but also an important archaeological site. Most visitors just enjoy the beaches !
