The trip was as advertised. The boat ride was about an hour to Gramvousa and then 20 minutes to Balos Lagoon with about a 2 hour stop at each location. For the price, it was well worth it, especially if you have multiple family members. The food available for purchase on board, particularly the hot food after Gramvousa, was excellent.

Please note to get there about 45 to 50 minutes before the boat leaves (we took the 3rd boat at 11:00 AM) to get car parking (if needed) and also to get spots in the shade on the boat.

For Gramvousa, if you are hiking to the summit of the castle, please have good walking shoes and water. Shade is also limited. Also, water shoes are useful as when you enter the water, there are a lot of rocks and the bigger rocks are slippery.

For the Balos Lagoon there are limited number of umbrellas and seats for rent if that is what you want to do. There are great places to snorkel to see fish.

We booked our trip through IOTours, who picked us up from our hotel at 07:25 and delivered us back at our hotel at 18:40, so yes it was a full day tour for 55 Euros each, but we were in a mini bus then a coach for 90 plus minutes to reach Kissamos, where the boat was tied up. The boat was far from idyllic, as the 'Gramvosa' holds some 500 plus people and because of its size it can't get into the Balos Lagoon where the smaller boats anchor. The 'Gramvosa' anchors where you have to clamber over rocks for 200 yards then before you can swim in the Balos Lagoon you have to wade across a pool for 500 yards, where the water is only 12 inches deep. All in all not an ideal activity for pensioners, especially as there was only 2.5 hours allowed and large amounts of tar on the rocks
We then sailed to the small island of 'Gramvousa', where the 'Gramvosa' was able to dock where the smaller boats do, but this is a very small island with an old fort on top and a small beach. Just imagine 500 people turning up with 1.5 hours to climb up to the fort and back or walk to the beach. Well its like watching ants going about their duties.
On the way to the Balos Lagoon you are advised over the loud speaker to hire your umbrella, which cost 4 Euros, but they only supply to top part, which means that you have to hold the umbrella if you want to use it to get shade, which is what a beach umbrella is for. Waste of money.
All in all a poor day out, especially for an old couple.

We took this trip on the Spirit of Athos paying around €40. The first comment was the sailing time was noted at 10:20am and to arrive 40 minutes before sailing. The actual sailing time it 11am so we spent a lot of time waiting, during which time the ship got very crowded! The sail to Gramvousa takes 1 hour so it’s already 12 noon when you arrive and half the day is gone. You leave at 1:40pm and should be back on the ship by 1:30pm. It’s then 20 minutes to Balos but it seems the same there. Get off walk to the beech and you’re already thinking you need to be back on the ship.

All in all it was a good day out, but the ship needs to leave much earlier, have fewer passengers, and give everyone more time to enjoy what they’ve ultimately paid to visit.

If we came again, we’d probably take the risk of driving to Balos and walking down which many people did despite the car hire companies telling you not to!

Was a bit concerned booking as while it was a highlight of our holiday last year - the recent reviews were terrible and alarming. I think it is clearly a case of when you go as we went in September and it was excellent from start to finish while the poor reviews are primarily July / August when the place was jammed. We found everything great including the service and the food which is very good quality for this type of trip and very reasonable. Make sure you get there early to get choice of seat and rent there umbrellas for €4 as 2 beds and an umbrella on Balos is €15 and a bit of a waste. We didn’t bother trekking up to the monastery as we did it last year and it is hard going on the midday sun. Had a lovely swim instead. Will definitely go again next year.

It's a mini cruise with two hours stops for each beach (Balos and Gramvousa). The trip by ferry can be very uncomfortable. Seats are not allocated and not enough.
On board umbrellas might be rented.
You leave the boat with hords of other people since many other ferries stop there at the same time. Boat sirens are often reminding that it's time to be back on board (after a stay of two hours) to reach the other site for a stay of two more hours or to leave (at the end of the day) to go back to Kissamos.
While I understand that some of the arrangements are made in order to not leave anyone behind, swimming while people are screaming and sirens ringing is not my idea of "Paradise" advertised by the company.
The beaches and the see are beautiful but definitely overcrowded. Find another way and another time of the day to go, when the ferries have left.

If I could give 0/5 I would! Bought 2 tickets online for the 10:20 boat, arrived there 40 minutes early as instructed to absolute chaos and long ques. Finally got to the front of the que only to be told there was no availability on our boat now and we’d have to wait for over two hours to the next available boat (despite us literally having booked for this time). I could hear many other people around us were also being told the same and very upset. It seems like the ticket booking is just a scam so they can send people on less full boats. There is absolutely no where appropriate to wait either, I was 8 months pregnant at the time this happened, so not only was this extremely annoying but incredibly dangerous as it was absolutely not safe for me to stand in the sun in the middle of a heatwave for two hours. All of the staff were incredibly unhelpful and rude, one guy literally just turned his back on us and walked away. We eventually managed to talk our way onto the boat after 10:40 but the whole experience was honestly terrible, avoid like the plague.

AWFUL. You will be jammed packed into a massive ferry with over 1,000 people. Very hard to find a seat. Other people don’t want to share their tables. Given minimal time at each location. Had we known our awful travel agent booked this, we would have cancelled it immediately. We were told it was a “boat”, which given our other boating excursions, we assumed would be very small and semi-private. This 1200 person ferry didn’t fit with anything else we did on our 17 day trip in Greece. It was literally the worst day/excursion/tour we had. It was like Disney World at the beach. We couldn’t even hike to the fort because there were so many people trying to get up the huge hill, see pics. Absolutely awful. Ruined the end of our trip.

For us, 4 adults and 3 kids this was a very good experience. We have booked the transfer from our hotel in Kolymbari and a day cruise to Balos and Gramvousa. The transfer was ok, waiting for the tickets and filling covid forms maybe took too long, but for us, it wasn't a problem. Then the cruise itself on the biggest boat there is. Great experience, just get inside and take a very comfortable couch by the bar or at the front of the ship by the exit to the deck, maybe some people say it's too crowded, for us it wasn't a problem. If you're afraid of crowded places stay safe and stay home, take a private tour that's the second option. The ship was very nice and clean, was a bit afraid of the toilets, but they were surprisingly well maintained.
In our opinion, the service was great and helpful, had no problems during the whole day.
The Balos Beach is a lovely place, one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen in my life, pure and unpolluted by people. Highly recommended!
Gramvousa Island was a very nice surprise for us, as we didn't look for any info about it. Nice beach, short hike to the fortress, and a shipwreck just by the beach make this place a lovely attraction.

They make fake covid precautions. Mask is mandatory, but saidly a very few people wore it. They sticked pictograms on every second bench that sitting there is forbidden, but travelers are not able to follow the rules, because they sold too many tickets. People almost killed each other for seats. The ship is too slow, and the disambarkation and getting to the beach in Balos took a long time, so you have a really short time in the lagoon and in Gramvousa Fort.

I can recommend this trip in good conscience. We read various comments and reviews about this trip so at first we were unsure if we want to give it a try. Later that week we changed our mind after talking to our hotel staff, who gave us superb recommendations:

First; take the early ship(we took CretanDailyCruises), if you dont mind the crowd. The later you go the smaller the ship is, which is good considering how packed the beach can be.

Second; take a Parasol with you. You can rent one on the ship if you like or ask in the hotel whether they have one to lend. There are absulutely no shades on Balos, while there are some trees at Gramvousa. Although it is forbidden by a sign at Balos, no one actually cares since the ones they have there on he beach are almost always occupied.

Third; bring water and suncream with you. This one is not to be taken lightly, as it tends to be hot and ardous if you climb up to the fortress of Gramvousa and (as mentioned) there are no shades at Balos.
