Small group walking tour of the old town - guide was knowledgable and enthusiastic. The tour gave a great insight into the history of Athens and how the old town developed over the centuries. An enjoyable hour and a half with Martha.

Had a fantastic time with Martha on the Plaka & Monastiraki Athens old town tour. She was bubbly, happy and engaging with all of us together with being very informative. It was great to hear and see some of the hidden sides to the area and I have been coming to Athens for over 30 years. I highly enjoyed the tour and would definitely recommend it to any visitors to Athens.

Rena was our guide for the small group tour of restaurants and food vendors. She is a young vivacious woman with great communication skills who entertained us all and educated us about her Athens through the food. It was a good introduction to the central city area and a pleasant morning. We concluded with a meal together in a delightful setting. The walking involved was not strenuous but an umbrella is recommended in the heat of summer; on our tour it was 38c. Thanks Rena, well done, highly recommended

Unprofessional and irresponsible
We found the tour guide very unprofessional and irresponsible:
1. As per instructions, we were at meeting point at Monastiraki Square at 9.45am for the 10am tour. However, we couldn't find the guide up till 10.05am. Finally found her chatting with others at one corner under the shade. She wasn't carrying an orange sign nor looking out for us. Since this is a prepaid tour, I am surprised she doesn't even bother to ensure those who paid had turned up or go look for them.
2. When we meet up, she didn't verify anything like check my name against a list, but just start the tour. Seemed like anyone could have just taken our places.
3. She appeared to be a last minute unprepared stand in, without permission from the tour company. She doesn't have much to say. We also did a Athens Free Walking Tour with a much more enthusiastic guide. It was 3hrs, covered everything in this tour (and more) and you can pay what you like (which we gave €40).
4. While I am perfectly fine with accents, I am bewildered to hear a guide who frequently can't find the proper words to describe an attraction (she has mentioned a few times she usually takes non-English tours).
5. It's a bright sunny day and the guide stands in the shade to talk, forcing the group to face the sun. Obviously inexperienced.
6. Before booking, I had checked via the company's FB Messenger on the best way to book for this tour as well as Acropolis and Ancient Agora. I was advised to book Acropolis plus Ancient Agora as a separate tour, and the guide for this morning tour will bring us to the next meeting point to meet the next guide. However, this guide was clueless that there is actually another separate Acropolis plus Ancient Agora tour run by her own company and where to meet etc. We had to tell her what we were briefed.
7. She also overran her tour and we ended up with no time for break before starting the Acropolis tour. The FB Messenger person had assured us there will be a 15-min in-between before starting Acropolis. We ended up delaying the start time of the Acropolis group.
8. As confirmed my suspicion that she is probably an unauthorised guide, she didn't bring us to the next meeting point to meet the next guide. Rather, she just point to us where the meeting point is and tell us to proceed on our own, and we had to rush over.

Dear guest, Thank you for taking the time to give us this extensive feedback. We are primarily focused in providing excellent service to all our guests, and when we have the chance to receive a review with so many details we consider it a unique opportunity to become even better and to be able to satisfy the needs of our guests even more. We are surely not pleased when someone like yourself thinks of our services as not professional. Οur first and only commitment is happy travelers to enjoy our city and our tours. That's why we have selected the best and most friendly local tour leaders and licensed guides in Athens, and we deliver high-quality service from A to Z. As a result of all these, we at the Athens Walking Tours have the most excellent reviews than any other tour operator in Athens. Your tour leader on that day is a very talented and educated young woman who loves what she does. We love to always include in our team young talents. Allow us to address one by one to all your remarks. 1. Our guide was at the meeting point on-time as you say. The group consisted of 10 people, and all other participants were already there before you arrived; the guide had checked them in her list and the only ones missing were you; she did not leave to start the tour on time but she was waiting for you. Yes, there was not a sign on that day, and this is a mistake on our behalf, we apologize. 2. She didn't need to check your names as she knew your name and who was waiting for, so she did not delay further the start of the tour. 3. All our tour leaders or licensed guides are legally working in our company complying with all Greek work regulations; they are all well trained, and this is obvious from the thousands of excellent reviews the Athens Walking Tours have continuously received. We are a licensed travel agency that provides tours and activities complying with all laws and regulations. On the contrary, I would like to inform you that the Free Walking Tours is an illegal activity in Greece and has been often prosecuted for the unlawful hiring of the people working with them. 4. We use only locals for the better experience and the insight knowledge they can transmit to their guests. We do not use foreigners who would guide without the feeling, the love or the passion of a local for his history and culture. Surely there is an accent speaking a foreign language, but all our guides speak fluent English, and she has often been praised for it. 5. Some people like being in the sun, some not. Everyone is free to choose where to stay while listening to the guide. 6. We offer daily more than 40 different tours, and it is not easy for all of us to recall with the accuracy needed the time, tour titles and meeting points. That is why she showed you our representative at the specific meeting point so you could have the proper info and check-in procedure. 7. You are right about this !!! We are very accurate, but our guides are driven by their enthusiasm sometimes and neglect the time trying to offer as much as possible and their best self. 8. Our guides and all people from the Athens Walking Tours who are involved in the operation of the tours and activities surely meet at the meeting points as they have to cooperate and coordinate the procedure of the tours participants. Closing up, we would like to mention that you could have told all this to your tour guide directly, while you were together and she could have helped a lot; this is an advantage of a small group, you can ask, tell what you prefer and the guide will take care. This is what we like to achieve with our small groups. We like to thank you for visiting our beautiful historical city!
