It was a long day, but well worth the trip from Athens. The weather was lovely, the history was fascinating, and the views were breathtaking.

Since it is such an early morning, you can buy sesame seed bread rolls just outside the railway station in Athens, and there is a coffee shop just inside the train station, if needed. There is also a dining car in the train, itself. You enter the railway station at Athens and go to the middle track #8 for the train to Kalambaka. Take the escalator downstairs and then back up to cross over to platform #8.

We went to the grocery store the day before to buy snacks and pita bread along with dips, and drinks to eat while in the train. Although I wanted the 1st class tickets and they were sold out, the main economy section wasn't bad. Just more people.

When you arrive in Kalambaka, you disembark and just outside are the many tour operators there with your names on clipboards so you know which tour you are with. Our tour guide, Vigalis was a resident of Meteora and was very knowledgeable about the history of the city and monasteries.

You stop first at a road side where you can see the hermit monks' cave retreats in the mountain side. Very interesting history of how once they decide to become hermit monks, they live out the rest of their lives. You are here about 1/2 hour.

Then there is a bathroom break and stop for a quick take out lunch or eat in lunch at a local cafe. From there, you drive to the monasteries. You visit 3/6 active monasteries- 2 were convents and 1 was a monastery. Women need to have a scarf tied along their waists for entrance regardless of what they are wearing. If you don't have a scarf, they will sell you one for 3Eu. Men cannot be wearing shorts.
You must have cash for entrance and each adult ticket is 3 Eu each at each of the stops.

By the time you are dropped back off at the train station around 4:30pm, you have visited 3 places and visited a breathtaking vista point for amazing photographs.

It is a long day trip, but well worth it. You will not be disappointed that you made the trip and took the time to wake up early and come back late. We arrived back at Athens around 9:15pm and had the same taxi driver who dropped us off in the morning, waiting for us when we came back.

This October was our first time visiting Greece and my husband was dead set on visiting Meteora. I was hesitant because of the long train ride and the fact that it would take an entire day, but let me tell you.. it is 100% worth it.
This is a truly unique, potentially once in a lifetime experience that combines unimaginable natural majesty with human tenacity and historical wonder. The scenery alone would have been worth the trip, but our amazing guided tour made for a very rich experience.
Our Tour guide Katerina was incredibly personable and very knowledgeable, and as a local to the area you could tell she had a deep personal connection to the region and the history there. I know if we had visited the monasteries on our own we would not have gotten as much out of it: learning from Katerina about the history and tenacity of the monastic community made for a fascinating experience.
In terms of logistics, the train ride was actually very pleasant, and especially on the way there we enjoyed seeing the greek country side. In our opinion it is worth it to upgrade to the first class seats and get a carriage! Make sure you bring your vaccination certificates with you in order to board the train, we almost missed the train as we weren't aware and had to dig in our phones to find them.
The tour bus was very comfortable and I could see the benefit in taking a tour rather than trying to drive yourself up the twisting roads and find parking.
For the ladies, you will see the dress code requires a long skirt or dress, for me it was worth it to find a suitable dress and wear it rather than buying the scarfs they sell to wrap around your waist. I felt dressed for the occasion and felt like I was respecting the wishes of the monasteries.
Over all, I would highly recommend this tour: it is well worth taking a day of your time in Greece. It was truly unforgettable!

This was a cool tour! The train ride from Athens to Meteora is beautiful but is 4 hours one way so be sure to factor that in to your plans. Definitely recommend getting the first class ticket so you can have a private cabin (unless you're with only 2 people then you may have to share). The tour and guide was knowledgable and we saw so many spectacular sights. There is a lot of steps and a lot of walking though which was fine for me but I saw many older people who had a tough time.

Excellent blend of learning about the history of the area (the arrival of the monks and eventual building of the monasteries), visiting 3 of the monasteries and breath taking scenery.
Our guide, Maria, is a local and was able to share a lot of stories - both factual and some fable - about the history of the area. Maria was very knowledgeable and added a good balance of humour to the narrative.
The train ride is long - highly recommend taking advantage of the first class upgrade.

We took the train from Larissa Station in Athens to Meteora. The train was comfortable and gave a beautiful view of the country side. It was easy to meet with our tour guide Jim and his driver. We made a pit stop before starting the tour. We went to three monasteries. Jim and his driver stopped along the way to show us great views and photo ops along the way. Jim and his driver were great photographers with your phones. Jim was not only knowledgeable, but he is a resident of the area so you are given a tour by a local and part of history. Jim had a great sense of humor and it made for a great time. Overall, the trip was well paced and fun. Bring a hat, sunscreen and proper modest clothing! Bring your 3 Euro per person to enter the monasteries and if you forgot your skirt, they will offer to sell you a cover skirt. They take cash only to enter.

Thank you Jim for a great and informative tour!

The site is one of its kind and a must see. Amazing views, architectural marvel and very pleasant on the mind and the sight. Those with a little bit more inclination towards history and spirituality will be even more enthralled.

Coming to the tour, our guide Maria was probably the best - a local who grew up there with all the knowledge and a great humor - the best combination one could ask.

The only minor downside is the 4-hr train journey (one way) from Athens to Kalabaka.

Meteora is somewhere you must visit if you get the chance.

As many reviews have said, it is a very long day, over nine hours on the train - but it is worth it.

We were met by our guide on arrival and shown to our transport. We visited many different points along the way to the monasteries and were given ample time at each spot to explore / take photographs. Our guide was local, extremely knowledgeable and informative, answering any questions asked.

The sites were an additional 3 Euros to enter but all very interesting allowing for some absolutely stunning scenery.

All in all a memorable experience.

This was a fascinating tour of a really stunning area of Greece. The train ride was long--4 hours each way, so it was worth paying a little extra for a first class carriage. Our guide, Vasili, and our driver were locals and extremely knowledgeable of the area and the 3 monasteries we visited, as well as the history of the monastic movement there. For anyone interested in the history of Christianity, this is a must-see; it's also worthwhile for anyone interested in the history of the area in general.

My major caveat is that this is super demanding physically. I damaged my Achilles tendon shortly before this trip and simply could not manage the stairs at the first two, and while I was able to visit the third, I wasn't able to manage the flight to the WC. That being said, Vasili and our driver were really amazing, giving me the time I needed without pressuring me to hurry up, letting me stay comfortably in the bus, and taking gorgeous photos for me. I can't say enough great things about them!

We really enjoyed this experience! Our guide Vasily was knowledgeable and was ready to answer any questions we had. The train ride to Meteora is 4 hours, therefore be prepared with food and water. You can also buy food and coffee on the train, but please be advised that they only accept cash. Our bus and guide picked us up at the Kalambaka train station and took us from the base of the mountains to the top with the monasteries, all along explaining the beautiful history of Meteora. The bus stopped one time during the trip for a bathroom break and to grab lunch and then stopped at three monasteries for us to explore. We also stopped at overlook points to get pictures. At the end of the trip we were dropped off at the train station and were given enough time to grab snacks or food for our 4 hour train ride back. Be prepared for a jam packed day and a long train ride. This was our favorite part of our Greece trip and we were glad we chose this experience!

Katarina and our driver were both wonderful! They stopped at every view, offered to take our pictures, and directed us to good food after the tour. Katarina shared her personal stories since she grew up in the area which added so much to the experience! It was amazing seeing the monasteries and hearing about the lives of the monks & nuns.

A few things to note:
•The train ride is not guided- you have to get to the train station and ride the train alone
•bring cash- the monasteries are €3 each, and the train only takes cash in the cafe car
•there are bathrooms at the monasteries, but they’re basically holes in the ground, plan accordingly
•women either wear a long skirt covering the knees and shirt covering the shoulders, or bring a long scarf that you can wrap around you to cover your knees. Our guide had some we could borrow, otherwise you had to buy one at the monasteries to cover yourself.

Highly recommend this trip! Also we appreciated the upgrade to first class on the train, comfortable and clean, assigned seats, separate bathroom (if it works)
