In September last year (2019), we took the Oporto Northeast Mountains Tour. My wife and I are from Australia, and during our holiday to Europe we spent a few days in Oporto, Portugal. During our stay in Oporto we got into a conversation with some locals about the best places to visit, and they recommended, amongst other things, that we go and see the area of Serra do Gerês. As my wife and I both love to visit places of great natural beauty we immediately searched for a tour that could take us there.
And as the tour promised, it was a great day – and a standout highlight of our visit. Our guide Manel met us at the prearranged meeting point and took us, in a very comfortable van, up into the mountains of Gerês. We eventually stopped after winding our way through a beautiful rocky mountain scape, and then made our way by foot up a path to the great rocky ridge of Chalcedon. Once there, we began climbing through, up and over a ravine of boulders and squeezing between cracks in the rocks. It was really an adventure! Tip: wear good walking shoes, not flip flops!! Though a little challenging at times, you do not need to be super fit, and our guide was always there making jokes and ensuring our spirits remained high, and generally keeping us out of trouble. After finally making our way out of the ravine we were rewarded with the most magnificent of views, making all the hard work (not really that hard!) well worth it.
We then went for lunch at a fantastically located and beautifully designed restaurant called ‘Abocanhado’, which, as well as having great food and excellent service, has an incredible view of the surrounding mountains.
Later in the afternoon we continued our tour through the beautiful Serra do Gerês passing by numerous waterfalls and many amazing landscapes. On the way back we also stopped at the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte and its famously majestic staircase, and while we were there, we also visited the funicular railway which connects the sanctuary with part of the city of Braga. Another incredible experience!
All in all, the tour was outstanding. We went for the beautiful nature, but we got so much more. In a single day, we got to see a huge amount of some of northern Portugal’s lesser travelled parts, from natural parks to important heritage sites. On top of all that we got to spend a day with Manel, our very informative guide, whose unbounded enthusiasm and good humour, made the tour an absolute delight. Thank you ExploreOporto!
