      Book it!
This tour is excellent...the views, the wine, the tastings, the places you visit and so worth the price. What made it extra brilliant was Ricardo our guide and Novais our driver. Ricardo is so much fun and gave us lots of knowledge and facts. Novais navigated some tricky roads perfectly. They really did make the day special.

      boomer humor
Steer clear! If you’re assigned Mario as your guide, request your money back immediately. He’s disrespectful, makes horrendous comments and su1cide jokes (yes, multiple!). 50% of the information he shares during the tour is made up and not factual. The tour itself is a terrible cash grab, you’ll be stuck on the bus for over 50% of the tour listening to headache inducing nonsense. The food sucked too.

Great day out with the best host!
Had an amazing day with our host Mariana and coach driver Arlindo! Mariana was very knowledgable on the area as we travelled on the beautiful coach. She made it fun and not too heavy! The scenery was beautiful. The wine tour was fascinating and picturesque. The boat cruise for an hour also lovely. The lunch exceeded our expectations! Beautiful food and free flowing wine. Mariana ensured my dietary requirements were met too and kept everyone happy. We sat with such lovely people too. Lastly we stopped off on the way back at a lovely little village for an ice cream and pastry. A really enjoyable day out, would highly recommend. Thank you to both Mariana and Arlindo for making it such fun and enjoyable.

Great highlights of Porto in one day!
We really enjoyed our tour with Mario and Femo! Mario has a great sense of humour and kept the trip informative but enjoyable for the whole day! If you only have limited time in Porto this is a great tour to get an all encompassing experience!

Amazing Douro Valley and Wine Tasting Tour
We took the Douro Valley tour with wine Tasting and River Cruise with Ines C. as our tour guide and Paulo as our driver. I can't rave enough about both of them. We went as a family with our grown children and their partners and we all had a great time. Ines was knowledgeable and engaging, and Paulo was a great driver. The tour itself included beautiful scenery, great food, and wonderful wine tasting at a beautiful vineyard. It was an all-day tour that was well worth the cost. I highly recommend- and ask for Ines and Paulo.

      Better than we expected!
Ricardo and Ricardo (both guide and driver) were fabulous!!! We booked this at the last minute after finding smaller tours sold out and we had low expectations. Although our group was bigger than we would have liked (25 or so) we never had to wait for anyone, all were quiet and delightful. Information from Ricardo was complete and interesting - full of wine-making and local flora knowledge — and with kind humor. We had plenty of time to ourselves, and to meet some folks at the tastings and at the multi course lunch. Terrific other stops on the way, the driver was perfect. We would recommend this trip! - Barbara and Eric from Boston.

We signed up for the Full-Day Tour to Santiago de Compostela and Valença do Minho from Porto with a guide. This tour was a mess. Our guide (Antonio—who drove very quickly and is prone to slamming on the brakes to avoid speed traps) gave us only a few tidbits on the long drive to Spain (maybe ten minutes total over two hours), and when we arrived at the Cathedral he told us to go explore on our own and meet for lunch. No information, no tour, nothing. He headed off with a young woman (we were never told who she was, she just seemed to be with him and the group). When we gathered for lunch I suggested that my travel companion and I sit across from one another to avoid close exposure to strangers across the table. I was told by the guide that we could not. When I insisted, he simply ignored me and we were forced to sit facing complete strangers without masks across a small table. This tour was billed as taking ‘COVID safe’ precautions, which according to signage throughout Portugal is masks or two meter distance. It was awkward and uncomfortable and we worried about exposure.

After lunch we returned to the bus (masks required in the bus, thankfully) and continued to Valenca. Upon arrival, we got a five minute overview as we drove around looking for a parking place.

Once parked, we were again told to walk around on our own and find the bus in 45 minutes. We had no idea where to go and ended up just eating gelato as we had no time to explore and no clue where to go.

We were then to be ‘returned’ to our hotel, except ‘traffic was bad’ and the driver didn’t want to go around, so we were left several blocks away from where we were picked up with little direction on where to find our hotel.

We visited the Living Tours center in town the next day, as we had a future tour booked and wanted to make sure the guide actually planned to guide us, or if we should cancel. When we told the person behind the counter what happened, she asked who our guide was. When we told her she burst into rapid fire Portuguese to her colleagues, then explained to us that they ‘have had a few problems’ with Antonio lately.

The day (and the 100 plus Euros each) was a waste, we learned nothing about the sites. Given that this is an issue the agency was apparently aware of, we were even more disappointed. Save your money or book with a different company if you want to learn about the cathedral, the pilgrims, or the town of Valenca,

Note: We did end up taking the second tour which we had booked before our arrival, after the tourist office assured us that our tour to Spain and Valenca was not the norm. I will review that one separately; it went well and that guide did a wonderful job (except for the fact they were 30 minutes late to pick us up).

Good afternoon from Living Tours, Dear Michelle, Thank you so much for your time in sharing your complete feedback about your experience. We are very sorry to hear that the tour didn’t go through your expectations. After considering and investigate your feedback we are ready to answer to your review. Regarding the driving, we checked our car track and our guide’s driving it respected the safety norms, and it doesn’t show an erratic behavior. About the drop-off, the car track also shows us our van passing in front of the morning meeting point around 6 pm. The information that we have is that the guests requested to be drop-off at 5m walking distance from the meeting point. Concerning the young woman, at the beginning of the tour, she was introduced as being a member of the company. Regarding the situation in the restaurant, we do apologize for the uncomfortable situation. We do understand your concerns. In Portugal, the masks and the 2-meter distance are just a recommendation (except public transports and health services). Once more we are very sorry to hear that you were worried about exposure. About the information provided during the tour by our guide, we can say that he had formation to make an excellent tour. According to 5 stars review of other guests that joined this same tour: “(…) António was very experienced, kind, and correct. He gave us all the information and he joined our walking tour. (…)” Regarding the information provided in our Tourist Service Office, we want to say that we hadn’t any problems with our guide. Once more, thank you so much for your complete review. We always try to learn and improve from our customer’s feedback, and we will have your review under consideration so we can improve daily our services. Best regards, Living Tours Team

Visiting Santiago was a very enjoyable day and the lunch was a nice addition. Christian was a great guide and provided a lot of historical information on the bus ride. The time in Santiago felt a bit rushed but it’s also a reasonable distance from Porto so the bus ride itself consumes alot of the time. We had to wait awhile to get access to the inside of the church because there was a Pilgrim Mass celebration when we arrived so time inside the church was limited. It was still however an enjoyable day.

Paul Summers was an excellent guide who generously shared his vast knowledge of the area all day. He fearlessly faced traffic, pedestrians, and seemingly impassible spaces in Valenca. Our meal in Santiago de Compostela was a delight with plenty of food, a variety of local foods, family style tapas eating, a lovely staff and all in a picturesque restaurant that has easily accessibly bathrooms. The trip was well planned with bathroom stops both coming and going to Santiago de Compostela. Paul, in particular, made the trip because he provided a well-paced explanation of everything from the roadway system to the surrounding flora and fauna as well as the history of the areas we passed through and our final destination. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in making the quick pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

The trip to Santiago Compostela and Valenca was great especially for all seven of us as Catholic Christian, however the driver and guide Mario was very rough driver and we felt so nervous and unsafe during whole time in the car(mini Van). Sometimes he was busy talking and looking another guest sitting in front and no hands on the steering wheel. The car was shifting a lot and sometimes went on the line between the lanes. We even asked him to slow down because my friends sitting on very back almost got car sick. Other than that he was very enthusiastic guide.

Daniel made this day awesome - started out in the rain for our road portion to Santiago where Daniel gave us a very informative presentation of not only the sights along the way but explained the history of the Camino as well as St James. He has great humor and extensive knowledge - a true professional in his field. The 2+ hour commute seemed short as Daniel pointed out the highlights and provided historical perspective.

We had plenty of time to explore, enjoy a great group lunch and explore a bit more before departing Santiago on to Valença for a walk inside of city fort originally constructed in Roman times. The architecture of the fort was amazing and of course there were tons of vendors inside peddling local Portuguese wares. Back to Porto to end a 10.5 hour day that was done well.

Not quite sure how Daniel pulled this off but it rained nearly all the way to Santiago, cleared up when we toured, pour sideways while we ate lunch and cleared as we walked out of restaurant only to open up to sunny skies for the remainder of the day - St James blessing us?

We were looking forward to this tour and we were not disappointed! Antonio, our guide and driver, was waiting for us at the meeting point when we arrived. Much to our surprise, it ended up being a private tour as my wife and I were the only participants.

Antonio’s English is very good and his many years of experience working in the cruise industry serve him well. He is very customer-oriented and it was interesting to learn about the history of Santiago de Compostela and about St. James from him. We also enjoyed Valenca do Minho; it was quite interesting to stroll through the streets inside the fortress where people still live. The views from the fortress are also beautiful.

The lunch included in the tour was excellent and the best we have had on our many tours.

Our full day excursion to Santiago de Compostela was wonderful. Our guide Valdemar picked us up in central Porto and drove us 2½ hours in a comfortable minivan to Santiago de Compostela. We broke up the drive with a stop for coffee at the midpoint near Vigo in Spain. During the drive north, Valdemar provided an historical overview, told us what to expect at our destination and gave us directions and a detailed map. This briefing was important, since we were effectively on our own during the time in Santiago de Compostela. The downtown was easy to navigate (we simply followed the pilgrims on their final leg of the Camino) and we loved seeing the cathedral with beautiful interior and historic relics. Afterward, we enjoyed an authentic and delicious multi-course Galician lunch. Our drive back to Porto included a stop at the impressive medieval walled city of Valenca do Minho. A very memorable trip!

The van that we rode in was clean, air conditioned, and the driver had a microphone which made his commentary perfect for all to hear. Our guide was very knowledgable about the history of Portugal. He kept us entertained and we had many great conversations along the way. On the way to Santiago we took many lovely photos of Portugal. There are many shops and restaurants to browse in Santiago. The highlight was Valença - with its rich history and panoramic scenic views.

Martin was a wonderful guide. Santiago de Compostela was beautiful and we appreciated hearing the background and lure associated with this beautiful church. Because tour guides aren't permitted to lead tours inside the church (which is a GOOD thing...nothing worse than touring a beautiful cathedral where guides are overheard everywhere) Martin gave us info and stories along the way and encouraged us to ask questions on the drive back. We had some for him and he answered everything promptly! He was also very gracious when we ran a few behind settling the check at a local restaurant. The streets are charming and there are so many stops off for coffee or shopping...and you can't get lost because you're always in sight of the church tower! Valenca do Minho was also a fun, quick stop! It's so cool to see fortified villages and we were given a complete tour in some pretty tight places but Martin was a pro. Every time we passed through one of the super small spaces we would cheer and he would say, "Just wait, there's another!" :) Great day and an absolute must do.
