A full day out in a small group with an excellent guide and driver Daniel who made it a very interesting and informative trip there and back. The first port winery visit which was to a boutique producer was excellent, and the accompanying lunch was enjoyable. The river cruise was with other groups on a packed large boat which was only saved by the spectacular scenery. However the second visit in the afternoon to Croft’s was a total let down, especially after the morning’s visit where we were coached on how to recognise quality and aged port, as the port quality offered for sampling was incomparable. In addition the short tour around by the local guide whose English was almost unintelligible was not that interesting or attention holding. A real let-down after the morning. Luckily the weather held all day and a different route out of the valley and back to Porto did give more great views of the Douro and region. There are several tour options to the Douro valley with separate operators and prices, and so the advice is try to research which wineries will be visited on the day by the tour provider, which may be difficult given the lack of detail on-line, and select the tour according to one’s preferences.

The tour is described as a wine tasting but it is port wine that is sampled not table wine. This was disappointing because there are some nice table wines in the region. The two wineries visited both described the production of port; there was no need to repeat the process at the second winery. The lunch was well below the standard expected for the price of the tour: lukewarm soup that was unidentifiable, pathetic salad, main courses were below average as was the dessert. The table wine was very ordinary and lacking in quantity, only one bottle of red and one bottle of white per table.
The first stop on the tour was at Armende, a town with a church and a handful of shops and cafes. There was no mention of this in the advertised itinerary. The hour spent there would have been better spent at a winery sampling table wines.
The tour guide did not appear to be very knowledgeable and lacked personality. However the bus driver performed well on the winding roads in wet conditions.

Tour was mediocre at best. Some nice parts but mostly not good. What's not made clear is that the tour guide is essentially useless. No history, no explanations, no guiding. Our guide spent more time taking with the bus driver and other workers than interacting with anyone who paid for the tour. The itinerary does not follow what was shown on our trip advisor itinerary. In fact it followed the same tour that was $10 cheaper. There was an hour plus delay due to the driving route being blocked by a cycling competition. Lastly, the bus drivers drive like crazy. Not ours specifically but other drivers nearly ran over multiple people while we were waiting for our tour in the beginning. This tour company is the epitome of high volume and low quality.
The positives were the one wine tour (Croft) had a nice tasting and tour of the vineyard. We also bonded with other patrons over how bad the tour was and even eavesdropped on other tours guides giving good history and explanations. So at least there was that.
I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Douro valley tour was really amazing to see sucha beautiful views and lots of wine tasting. It’s totally worth it. Jessica was our host who was very sweet, lovely and always smiley made me feel welcomed. You could tell she is very passionate and enjoys her job. She entertained us throughout the journey on the bus by interacting with everyone, teaching us Portuguese language and singing a portugese song. Also, you meet people from all over the world, different cultures and age group which was nice to get to know each other. Everyone was lovely and friendly including the wine tours host. He was really funny and entertaining, made us laugh. Lunch was fantastic, you get to drink more wines again after wine tasting. I had a lovely group on my lunch table (from Dubai, Singapore, France, Canada and Thailand) with people with full of energy, positive vibes, and very welcoming that I didn’t feel like I was in solo trip and made my trip memorable.Thank you.
Sadly, I had a very bad experience as well especially as a solo travelLer. I went to the toilet after wine tasting and due to long queue on the toilet I was stuck there and when I came back everyone had left on a bus for a boat. They didn’t realise i was left behind as they miscounted the number of passenger on the bus. I felt terrified, helpless and was in tears because I asked for help to people around there, they don’t speak English. It was difficult to communicate and I didn’t have my host number to call her. Eventually, they were contacted and came back to pick me up but I missed my boat trip so couldn’t go on a boat which was the main highlight of the trip that I was desperately looking forward to it. It was really sad, and horrible experience in my life. Jessica was really kind, she hugged me and reassured me. She made sure I was ok and tried to help me to get another boat trip. Unfortunately, there were no any next day boat trip available and I didn’t get any refund, or compensation in return either. So I was really disappointed and bad memories on my last day of staying in Portugal. Lastly, I would also recommend to use the toilet before going back to home. Since, I didn’t go on a boat I didn’t use the toilet on a boat. After drinking lots of wine, I was dying to use the toilet. There were no any toilet services for next 1 hrs plus as it was in the highway. Honestly, it was awful and worst feelings. I must say starting was good but ending didn’t go well for me unfortunately. Overall. I would definitely recommend this trip but make sure to get the host number in case of situation like me and be there on a time that’s what I learnt from my experience.

There are many day tours to the Wineries on the Douro river. All the tours seem to go to the same places. The difference lies in are you in a large group or small. Is your lunch in a restaurant or at a winery and what kind of food is being provided. If you are doing the boat option, are you on a large book (40-50) or a smaller one, and how many wineries are you visiting. I read all the reviews of the trips, and looked at all the pictures. In the end I booked a trip and felt a bit cheated because it was not what I read. I simply did not expect to be with 38 other people which slowed everything down.
We drove 2 hours to the Douro. We then waiting until we took an hour boat cruise on a large boat that was very hot. We then waiting for our bus to pick us up and take us to a winery. The owners did not seem ready for us. In the end we had about 20 minutes to sample the Port they provided for us before we had to hurry back to the bus. We then drove to a restaurant for lunch. We had to wait there for the staff to get ready for us. We then had a nice lunch. Afterwards, behind schedule, we drove to the second winery and sampled two types of Port. Once again we had to hurry. Then we drove the 2 hours home. While my travel companions had a good time, if also felt like the trip was not quite as advertised. In retrospect, if you want to sample port. I would probably just stay in Porto and visit the different cellars and taste, or join a small tour group for about 30euros and do it with them.

Good morning from Living Tours,
Thank you so much for your time in sharing your complete feedback about your experience.
We are very sorry to hear that the tour didn’t go through your expectations.
We apologize for the larger group. Our tours are characterized by smaller groups, but we suppose that you made the tour in a day that unexpectedly one of our guides got sick, so the only solution it was a bigger bus for all the guests (to not make a last-minute cancellation).
The itinerary described it’s not the one of our tours (we don’t start by the cruise and we don’t go to a restaurant in the Wine Tour – we always have lunch in a vineyard).
I can assure that we always book in advance all the services that make part of the experience.
Once more we do apologize that the experience didn’t correspond to your expectations.
We always try to learn and improve from our customer’s feedback, and we will have your review under consideration.
Best regards,
Living Tours Team

Pros: the meal at Favaios winery was lovely, and came with excellent wine. We enjoyed the wine tasting at Kopke winery a lot as well. We had a great group (~20 people) in the bus with us and had some great conversations over wine and food. The views of the Douro valley were absolutely breathtaking, both from mountainside and river cruise. Credit to our excellent driver for making us feel safe in a large bus navigating winding mountain roads.
Cons: the trip was advertised as only English, but our guide quickly informed us that it would be bilingual in French and English. It seems that it was advertised separately to French speakers as well to fill the bus. It was frustrating feeling that we were only getting half the information, and because of lengthily French interludes, there wasn’t as much of a sense of a continuous context or history. Instead it felt like we got somewhat disjointed trivia. The majority of the bus was English speakers with only a small handful of French speakers. Several others seemed frustrated by this as well

We took a Duoro valley day trip from Porto with Castro and we would highly recommend it! Book the smaller group tour (we only had 8 people) so it was a more personalized, comfortable small van rather than a large tour bus. He was so knowledgeable about the area. He also gave us insider tips like where to sit for the boat tour and made sure we were well hydrated the entire day. Would recommend to others!

We are grateful for your feedback. We are pleased to understand that you enjoyed your experience on your Wine Tour Douro Valley with our guide Castro!
Although our tours run in small groups of between 8 and 29 people, such as this one, to ensure a smaller tour (up to 8 guests) we advise you to opt for our Douro Premium Tour.

This was one of the best experiences on our first trip to Portugal! It's definitely worth the money and we would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a delightful experience outside of Porto city. We also had an amazing tour guide with a sense of humor which made the whole experience better. - 'Castro is beautiful!' :)
PS: There is a lot of wine served during the tour and a big lunch. ;)

This day was great from start to finish. Maybe we were lucky with the group we had, but met some lovely other travellers from all over the world and we quickly bonded over various glasses of wine and port during the day! The vineyards were beautiful and we sampled some truly delicious drinks, lunch was enormous and delicious (and included plenty of wine if we hadn't had enough by then) and the boat trip was lovely and calm.
Luciano was a fantastic guide, really cheerful, very proud of his country (and knew lots about everywhere we drove through/past) and a delight to have with us. Sousa our driver was excellent and skilfully navigated some of the narrower roads as well as crazy Porto traffic.
As a solo traveller I felt really safe, very much a part of the group experience and would totally recommend it to anyone wanting a day out of Porto to see where the wine is made.
Only one bit of feedback to the organisers - I'd have much preferred longer at the wineries instead of the boat trip which was lovely, but I'd have preferred to spend more time at the wineries themselves learning about the process, the different wines etc and then chilling on the terrace with the group. But that didn't remotely detract from the enjoyment of the day - a real winner all round!

Our guide Felipe was fantastic, knowledgeable about the region and Portugal’s history.
Sadly there were a few things that were a big disappointment:
1) First vineyard was a modern complex who gave us a quick walk around the cellar and showed us a larger one in the dark.
2) lunch was a real disappointment, pictures look like the restaurant is in a picturesque part of Duoro overlooking the river - the reality was a granturismo in a town with a view of the car park,
3) Despite stating its a small tour, they group you with another ‘small’ group so actually its a group of 16 people… makes me wonder the difference between what we had vs a mini bus experience.
The second characteristic vineyard was fantastic, tasting in the cellar with candlelight and Carina was knowledgable and explained the wines in great detail.
Overall we were disappointed with half the tour and felt we got little added value from paying extra to be part of a ‘small group’ and question where then premium part was.

Good morning from Living Tours,
Dear Alice,
Thank you for your comment. We're sorry that your tour of the Douro Valley didn't quite meet your expectations.
Living Tours works with several partners with whom we maintain trusting relationships to guarantee the best possible experiences for our guests. And, as we advertise on the platform, the services included in the tours (wine estate visits, restaurants) are subject to 3rd party availability and other groups or participants may be with the group during the experience and schedules may change without prior notice. However, we work hard every day to be able to offer quality services to our guests, finding solutions that allow us to maintain the high standard of our service, which we believe it happened in this case. Nonetheless, we regret that this was not your perception.
Regarding the first winery, we would like to note. Quinta do Portal (one of the partners we work with), the cellar was designed by Siza Vieira, one of the most renowned Portuguese architects of all time. In fact, one of the spaces you visited doesn't provide much light so as not to compromise the aging of the wines. The exterior wall is made of cork and the roof is covered with grass in order to guarantee the right temperature and humidity inside to ensure the quality of the wines.
Once again, thank you for your feedback, which helps us to improve our services day by day.
Best regards,
Living Tours Team

Do you cater for vegans? Thanks!

You should give your preference when booking. They did vegetarian and vegetarian gluten free - though the options were limited and we did not get all the items we were told were in these options

Hello, my boyfriend is on crutches at the moment. Is there a lot of walking on the tour? Thanks.
Written November 11, 2023
A reasonably fit man could do this tour reasonably easily on crutches I would think. Most of the time is spent sitting on the coach or boat. There are of course the tours of the vineyards but you sit at tables for the tastings and for lunch!

My friend is celiac and requires a gluten free meal. Does this tour accommodate gluten free?
Written April 23, 2023
Someone in our party requested gluten free - options on our day were cod or pork with a risotto and the only gluten was the pre-lunch bread basket.

Boa noite. Temos disponibilidade para dia 16/06. Minha esposa é gestante, tem algum desconto já que ela não poderá fazer degustação alcoólica. E se tiver um roteiro favor enviar no e-mail ju_costa@unochapeco.Edu.br. Obrigado.

Looking to book this tour for 2 people, one of which only drinks white and rose wine. Will there be options other than port and red?
Many thanks

Our table had a bottle of red and white to be shared and port/dessert wine with dessert

Hello! My friend and I have a train leaving from Porto Campanha at 6:40 pm on Dec 15. Could the tour drop us off at the train station at the end of the tour around 6:00 pm?
Written November 27, 2019
The tour ends at Sao Bento station so you would have to take another train to Campanha. I agree with a previous response about the uncertainty of the drop off time. Traffic/accidents and weather can delay the drop off time through no fault of the operator.
