Once in a lifetime experience along this historic trail. Could fault any aspect of it. The food and company was just awesome.Written September 18, 2024
- paulabH1418QO0 contributionsTop notch cycling vacation!Loved, loved this ride. Our guides were excellent and always adjusted to our needs. The views and terrain was incredibly beautiful and so varied. It was a little challenging at times, which we enjoyed. I would recommend to anyone who loves to cycle. Additionally, the hotels were superb. Thank you Sergio and Telmo for a fantastic time!Written September 18, 2024
- DebK5780 contributionsCamiño de SantiagoGreat ride in beautiful scenery and with wonderful accomodations. Guides Sergio and Telmo were great fun and gave us some of the local history. Some memorable meals organised by Sergio and in the company of a great group of fellow riders. Bikes were excellent but the riding is not for novices. Highly recommended!!Written September 18, 2024
- kerrylE5264VE0 contributionsTopBike Portugal is top-notchTopBike Portugal was excellent in their preparations and attention to detail. This was our third self-guided bike trip in Europe with three different companies and TopBike did the best job. Two of us rode e-bikes and two of us rode mountain bikes. The e-bikes had plenty of battery even on the very hilly day through Vigo. We were glad they suggested mountain bikes though we thought we wanted road bikes--the varied road surfaces would have been difficult without thick tires. They supplied a very complete set of bike tools and supplies, Ride with GPS route, Garmin if you need it, nice route descriptions including restaurant suggestions, and even offered us sunscreen. The walking tour of Porto and Port Tasting in Gaia was great and we appreciated the personal bike escort through Porto to start the trip. Super nice staff who checked in with us on the route via a WhatsApp group chat. We were very pleased with the Atlantic Coast path, views and scenery while riding, and hotels with excellent breakfasts. The Parador Baiona, Parador Pontevedra, and the Torre do Rio Rural Hotel were incredible. (We suggest adding an extra day in Porto and taking the train up the Douro Valley to Pinhao. Quinta das Carvalhas offers a self-guided hike through their vineyard for a nominal fee.) Thank you to all the staff at TopBike!!!Written July 31, 2024

- 177olavob0 contributionsBuen camino! In June 2024, my wife (65 yo) and I (67 yo) participated in the guided bike tour along the Camino de Santiago coastal route promoted by Top Bike Tours Portugal (TBTP). The path, starting in the city of Porto (Portugal), extends for around 280 km to “Praza do Obradoiro”, in front of the Santiago de Compostela cathedral. Some participants chose conventional bicycles while others opted for e-bikes, like me and my wife. I recommend e-bikes as there are hills and rough terrain which can make the trip quite strenuous and tiring. I understand this tour as fun, not pain. In my opinion, the guided tour offers the advantages of: support in case of mechanical problems with the bicycles; the company of other people; a guide who, obviously, knows the itinerary in depth, providing passage along the most attractive paths with a wide variety of landscapes and picturesque locations; the guide knows how to measure periods of rest and movement in order to comply with the daily schedule on time; a support van that accompanies the group and provides fruit and snacks at stops along the way, as well as assistance in case of need. More than a simple journey based on physical effort, the “tour” covers a set of aspects that add up to a unique experience. The itinerary: wonderful landscapes along the northern coastal region of Portugal and Galicia, Spain. Route passing through all types of terrain: cycle paths, rocky paths, wooden walkways, forests, roads, trails, villages, small towns, coastline, narrow and winding passages, waterfalls, ancient bridges, etc. Flat, descent, some climbs, not too much of a hassle if you're on an e-bike. We had all kinds of weather: sun, cold (not too much), a little rain, heat. Anyway, complete package. Hotel accommodations range from excellent to spectacular, not for grandeur or luxury, but for warmth and unique features. The cultural aspect: starting with the vibrant and historic city of Porto, which I recommend arriving a few days before the start of the tour to get to know it; already included in the program, on the first day, a guided visit to a winery in Vila Nova de Gaia where you can learn about the science and art of Port wine; visit to the Museu do Traje, in Viana do Castelo, Portugal; some notable churches along the way. The gastronomic aspect: at the end of each day, have dinner with the whole group in restaurants or at the hotel itself. Opportunity to enjoy the rich local cuisine accompanied by good wine, and an opportunity to relax after a tiring day, have a good laugh and exchange experiences between the participants who, on the “tour” I participated in, were of four different nationalities plus Portuguese guides. Always crowned, at the end, with the incomparable Port wine. I highlight a lunch in Caldas de Reis, Spain, where the guides ordered a selection of typical dishes so that we could try samples of the varied local cuisine. The high spirits: wonderful sensation transmitted by coexistence with the hundreds of people who are walking the path, highly motivated, with the best positive energy, all driven by the common effort to achieve the same goal. And so, as the days pass, a transformation occurs. In the end, you no longer see yourself as a tourist. Now you are a pilgrim. I can only classify the organization of the “tour” by TBTP as impeccable. I highly recommend it. The guides, Miguel and Telmo, were good-natured, attentive and gave good directions to the places we visited. They were essential to the success of the trip and ensured the best experience for the participants. Thanks. Finally, if anyone who reads this review felt motivated to undertake this journey of life and unforgettable memories, I can only wish “Buen camino”.Written July 4, 2024
- MomCanDream0 contributionsExperience of a Lifetime on the Camino de SantiagoTop Bike Tours has curated a fabulous, thrilling, and incomparable experience with The Way of St. James Bike Tour - Coastal Path to Santiago de Compostela. Sergio, with the help of Berto and Pedro, took such good care of our diverse group of 15 riders from different parts of the world; some of us belonged to cycling clubs, and some, like my husband and I, cycled very little. Most of the group opted for the e-bike option and I’m glad I did, too. I would say the age range of this particular group was 40 to 71 (for reference, I’m 64 and my husband is 68). Sergio has found the loveliest hotels, the most delicious restaurants, and the most scenic views to complement our trip on the Camino. The hotels far exceeded our expectations, each one seemingly more luxurious than the last. Delicious breakfasts fueled us up for the morning. Our bags were whisked away each morning and delivered to our hotel lobby each evening. We collected stamps for our passports to present to the Camino office in Santiago for our certificate. This was easy to do with the regular coffee/rest/nutrition breaks provided; cafés, restaurants and hotels along the route provide the required stamps. The support van would meet up with us with innumerable snacks: fresh fruit, bars, and water. The pace meant that while the route was challenging at times (for me, anyway), it never felt overwhelming and provided me with a great sense of accomplishment. We didn’t have to lament being unable to take as many photos as we may have wished en route, as Sergio ably took care of that and presented us with a fantastic keepsake at the end. It was a journey of self-discovery for me, as it taught me I could do things I had never imagined. I will always cherish this experience with Top Bike Tours and would do it again in a heartbeat.Written June 30, 2024
- 9gerryf0 contributionsThe trip of a lifetime. The Top Bike Portugal bicycle tour from Porto to Santiago de Compostela was the trip of a lifetime. From the moment we met the tour guides we were treated well, and every detail was taken care of. From properly sizing the bikes and making adjustments for each rider’s size and reach, to clearly giving information regarding the next day’s ride and what to expect, we were ready to go. As a casual bike rider, I was a little worried about how I would fare travelling so far each day. The pace was comfortable yet brisk, but the breaks were well spaced out and the guides frequently let us know our ETA at the next refreshment or bathroom stop. There was a leader guide, a sweeper guide (the last person in the group) and a support van that met us at the scheduled stops. The support van was equipped with spare parts and tools in the event of any needed repairs as well as snacks like fruit, energy bars, etc. and a supply of water to refill the on-bike water bottles and first aid. The bikes were well maintained and the guides were diligent in checking if there was anything needed, and they were always on hand to answer questions. The scenery was varied and amazing. From seaside views to traveling through farmland, small villages, large towns, over small bridges and streams, through forests, over roads, paths, cobblestone roman roads, dirt roads and a boat ride from Portugal to Spain . . . there is just too much to name. Every day felt like a dream, and each day we got stronger as the week progressed. The accommodations were spectacular, each one distinct and unlike anything I have encountered before. We met some wonderful people from around the world and all were surprised when the tour ended and all were saddened to say goodbye. It was challenging and beautiful. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. I would recommend this to anyone. Three cheers and many thanks to Sergio, Pedro and Berto!Written June 29, 2024
- damasuda0 contributionsAwesome Cycling AdventureTop Bike Tours Portugal is a great bicycle touring company. Our large guided group cycled with a leader, sweeper and super convenient van support from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. Most used E-bikes and some rode mountain bikes. The TBTP team of Sergio, Pedro, and Berto managed logistics and provided a well-organized tour experience. Through our guides extensive knowledge, we learned about the region’s customs, food, culture and Fado. Hotels and breakfasts were better than expected and the local restaurants they recommended for lunches and dinners were always amazing. Cycling the Camino with Top Bike Tours Portugal was a pleasant adventure from booking the trip to the bittersweet final farewell. Sergio was patient and answered any questions we asked. We would bike tour with them again.Written June 26, 2024
- Burhanco0 contributionsEl Camino for 6 days was a heavenly experience! This is a great tour service company. They take you through spectacular scenery and book elegant hotels. Breakfasts were super. Dinners are either your choice or arranged in famous local eateries. Guides are laidback and very patient. Telmo and Miguel were real gents. They made lots of stops and always provided plenty of water and snacks of all kinds- savory, salty, sweet, fruit, etc. The countryside in June was amazing but prepare to bike in every terrain possible- tarmac, gravel, dedicated painted trails and forest paths, cobblestone, mud, compact, sandy, board walks, etc. Simply lovely! Highly recommended if you have good knees. I used a Trek xcaliber 7 mountain bike and fell in love with it that I am going to buy one here in the US.Written June 23, 2024

- freddyp8250 contributionsMore Challenging Than Expected but Worth it!What a wonderful but challenging experience to bike from Porto to Santiago along the Camino. Top Bike did a great job of outfitting us and responding quickly when we had issues on our trip. The Porto tour was a bit of a joke but it took us a while to get outfitted and sized for bikes. Bikes were good quality and in excellent condition. We went the E-Bike route and were glad we did. Unless you bike 100+ miles a week, get the E-Bikes. We would have quit on day 1 w/out the ebikes. While some of the route is nice leisurely bike paths along the seaside, there are also extremely steep inclines and desents in the towns and countrysides on rough cobblestone, sand, dirt, gravel and rock paths. Plan on having more than one in your group utilizing the GPS and/or the APP as it was easy to get off the path due to poor satellite signals. The hotels were nice and had good breakfasts but 2 had no AC and it was hot.Written June 22, 2024

Tour guide company was surprised to see us even though I was inundated with emails about the tour prior to the trip. John, our guide, seemed like he wanted to be anywhere else but there. Was on his phone any chance he could get. Did not even ask me my name or tell me his (my husband and I were the only two in the group) . He had no idea of our ability level. Did not even try to adjust seat height. Initially he gave us a few tidbits of information that my husband had already read. We then proceeded to ride for 45 minutes past Coast Guard stations, museums, churches, castles with no information. I could’ve turned left and completely left the group and he would not even have known. When we stopped for coffee, John told us to go find a table and he would grab the coffees for us after sitting waiting for him for almost 20 minutes. My husband went and found him and he asked my husband if he had paid the bill and was ready to go. It was all we could do not to just walk away and leave him there with the bikes. We could’ve rented bikes on our own and got as much information. We are avid, experience, cyclist. However, this route was 70% unsafe for cyclist. 45 minutes of the 3 1/2 hour tour was unsafe for cyclist. In the route that he took, that was safe, he didn’t give us any information about the surrounding area… The Dura river, castle, etc. most of the information he gave us my husband had already read prior to coming to Porto. I have had many cycling tours in Europe, and I have to say this one was Very disappointing!

I've done so many city cycling tours, that this one felt a bit disappointing.
All we did is cycle up the coast, stop for a drink and go back. Not very informative, as obviously it's nicer to have some stops and learn more about the History of the place.
The guides were good though - but would have been nicer to be more interactive than what it was

This was our first visit to Porto and the bike tour was the highlight of our visit. My husband and I were the only 2 in the group, which was unexpected but great!! Tiago our guide was fantastic, he showed us all the main sights and took us along the Douro River and up to the beach. He has an excellent knowledge of Porto and gave us lots of tips as to good restaurants and places to see. Tiago made sure we were with him all the time and ensured our safety, we felt totally confident with him. If you do a bike tour make sure you ask for Tiago!

When I mentioned that I was going to be doing a bike tour in Porto, the locals thought I was crazy. After all, the city has many hills and steep inclines along the riverbank, so I was a little apprehensive about booking this tour. I am now happy to say that I'm glad I did - it was great and not too exhausting. You don't have to be a professional cyclist to enjoy this tour; as long as you have ridden a bike with gears and feel up for a light workout (the same you would get from walking many of Porto's hills), you will be fine.
Our guide, Marta, started the tour by getting us comfortable with our bikes and providing some local knowledge on the city's history and customs. We then rode down to the river bank and made our way out to the seaside. After stopping at a cafe for a quick break, we made our way back along the longest avenue in the city.
The bikes were 21-speed mountain bikes in good condition and our guide was equipped to deal with any issues e.g. flat tyres, chains, and gears. I found the route we took was easy for everyone; we avoided steep hills and instead took a long way around the city so that about a third was downhill, a third was flat along the seaside, and the final third was a gradual climb to the end of the tour. By the end, it was a little bit of a workout to get the blood pumping, but not enough to completely exhaust you.

This is an excellent bike tour to see Porto and you couldn't ask for a better guide than Tiago!! He was extremely friendly, patient, fun, and knowledgeable. You can tell he takes great pride in showing visitors around the city. The tour is the perfect balance between city and river/ocean views. It was definitely the highlight of our stay in Porto. Thank you Tiago!

I took three friends with me and we all had a great time. I highly recommend it if you don't have much time in Oporto or if you already know the city and want to try out something new. Marta, our guide, taught us some history and fun facts and the part of the ride that goes along the coastline is absolutely stunning. The ride is also pretty easy so don't be afraid to give it a try.

I highly recommend this tour, Porto’s downtown and coastline are absolutely gorgeous and there’s no better way to see them than by bike. But by far, the best part of our tour was our guide, Marta is a blast and clearly very passionate about her city. Truly, the perfect way to spend an afternoon in Porto, gorgeous sights and great company.

Hi, is it quite flat or some hills that we will cycle as some of us are not experienced cyclists ? I heard Porto is very hilly. Also, is it safe for kids around 10 and 11 years old to cycle in Porto? Is it along the cyclist path? Or it is on the road that shared by cars? We are a group of 3 families of all ages children. Thank you.
