Expertly organised trip on a safe and stable Catamaran (sea was lumpy but the vessel remained steady).
Very friendly and well informed crew (they do this almost every day so know their stuff…. and best areas to find dolphins and whales)!
Went expecting no sightings so as not to be disappointed but we saw many many spotted dolphins performing all sorts of “tricks”and a slow moving graceful school of pilot whales.
Stopped for while near the giant cliffs of Baia de Camara de Lobos for some younger souls to have a swim and the rest to enjoy a chat with other passengers and crew and a drink at very reasonable prices.
Final leg was back to Funchal harbour hugging the coastline.
3 hrs in total. Cost €30 pp.
Would recommend.

We went out with Sea Born in March 22 and had a fantastic trip. This large and comfortable boat left on time and quickly found a pod of bottle nose dolphins , followed by Atlantic spotted dolphins . We saw pilot whales too. The crew were polite and professional and informative sharing details of the species spotted. There were toilets on board and you could buy drinks too. It was suitable for all age of travellers.

We, family of four with two teenage sons, took the morning trip. We had to be on the quay 30 minutes before departure, so at 10 am. COVID precautions were very much in evidence: the three man crew and the shore staff wore masks at all times and the passengers were required to disinfect their hands before boarding, and of course to wear a mask. We were allowed to take off our masks after the Sea Born II had left the marina. Then the catamaran headed away from land and along the coast westwards. The boat was put on autopilot and two out of the three crew started scanning the sea for cetaceans with binoculars, one standing on the roof for a better view. After what seemed quite a short time we were among a school of dolphins, perhaps 30 in number. The skipper throttled back the engine till we were moving slowly through the water and the dolphins followed us with three or four weaving in and out within a metre of the bows. The catamaran has webbing in front of the cabin almost up to the tip of the bows which you can crawl or walk on, so you can move up to the front and get a good close-up view of the creatures in the water. After 10 - 15 minutes we left the dolphins and headed further westward, the crew still looking, unfortunately without success, for sea animals. The catamaran was turned around and headed back to moor off a beach near the Cabo Girão cliff, a seemingly popular place as another catamaran and a "pirate" ship were also moored there. A ladder was lowered and those who wanted to could go for a swim for about 15 minutes. The sea in October was comfortably warm once you got over the initial shock of immersion. Goggles were available. I did not see snorkel tubes, but I did not ask the crew about them, so perhaps they were also available. After the swim the boat headed back to the marina. The catamaran seems quite new and well looked after. The cabin area in the middle of the boat is covered, good for those who do not want to sit in the sun for the whole trip. There is a toilet in each hull of the catamaran, ladies to starboard. Drinks were served from a small bar area in the cabin zone. The crew and shore staff were all very friendly. The wind was unfortunately not strong enough for sailing, so we were under motor all the time, but that did not detract from our enjoyment of the trip. Even if we had seen no sea creatures at all the excursion would have been very worth while. All in all it was a very pleasant way to spend three of hours. Highly recommended!

It’s a very disappointing tour. A ripoff! They lure you in with the main attraction to see some dolphins and wales. Sure people saw them through the year. But unfortunately not today. So maybe off season? You could tell your clients before the trip. “ hey we haven’t seen any animals the last couple days. Your decision to join but at the moment we see them rarely ” so 60€ lost for nothing. you can’t predict nature but with the experience you could at least say something before people buy tickets. If you don’t say anything it’s a ripoff.. simple
And the spot for swimming and snorkeling lasted maybe 15-20 min.

I went on the boat as a fun activity for my birthday. It was actually wonderful to see the dolphins and even a whale, as well as the beautiful sights of Madeira's coast. However, after stopping at Cabo Girão and returning to Funchal, the boat was going unusually fast, causing it to shake a lot and create waves and splashes. I know the boat was going faster than it was supposed to since we quickly caught up to another boat that had left Cabo Girão around 10 minutes before we did. I was on the front right side of the boat (where I was during most of the trip) and was laying down. Suddenly, I was hit with a huge wave that got me soaked, as well as both the people that were with me and all our belongings (including electronics). I was in shock, as I was not expecting that, and the staff had not warned us that it could be dangerous to go there. When we left, the staff did not come to us to check if we were okay and even laughed in our faces when we explained what had happened (although I am sure they noticed, just didn't care). This is what led me to write this review, as I consider the staff could've been friendlier and more considerate with paying customers.
The trip is very worth it, but you can quickly find other companies with the same prices (or cheaper) to do the exact same trip that surely care about their customers. Do not recommend and will not return.

Possibly the biggest con.
Advertised as a whale/dolphin watching boat trip. Nothing was seen and the staff kind of gave up looking, no apology, no explanation nothing.
If you want 3 hours of seeing nothing you can get that cheaper than €30. They then had the audacity to ask for tips for the staff on the boat. No these staff had done nothing, conversed with no one, and couldn’t serve a drink of you had no cash. But they wanted and expected a tip. Avoid its utterly a waste of time.

It was a nice boat trip but very boring. We didn’t see any dolphins, the only thing we saw was one turtle and a seal that we . We stopped for 10 minutes to swim but that was it. There was no explanation of what was happening or an word about what we were seeing. It was a waste of time as it took 3 hours but we saw nothing. We got the deal with a information centre that was near our hotel. The information centre was very misleading as it was advertised as €10 on the window but was actually €30 per person. Waste of money, I would recommend going with a different company .

Fabulous afternoon on the water.
Yes we did see both dolphins and whales.
Really well organised plenty of crew on board. One had an interpretation guide to show passengers the whales and dolphins we had spotted.
There is a bar on board for drinks.
If you decide to sit out on the front believe the crew who they say you will get wet.
There is a swimming opportunity as you head back to Funchal.
A large boat with lots of space.

Thoroughly enjoyed this trip with my wife and daughter aged 11, only dropped a star as we only saw a few dolphins from a distance, staff were friendly and informative.
Prices on board were competitive at €2 for a small beer and same price for small Pringles.
We were given a free voucher for this trip at the tourist information bureau on the dual carriageway opposite the Pescana Carlton, see photo of the bureau I’ve attached.
All we had to do was attend a 90 minute ‘presentation’ at the Royal Savoy Hotel next door, no hard sell and pretty painless, saved us €70.
Highly recommended!!

3 hours sat on a packed boat with people coughing everywhere without masks. No help getting on or off the boat. Nothing seen. No information given about the area. Very dull and no mention of the option of going out again to try to see things again. Really wish we had not have gone! Defo do not recommend Seaborn Catamaran

Our catamarans have the capacity for 100 people, at this time of the year we leave with 50 and many times with less.
All safety measures apply but we are not the authority to force people to wear the mask... it is up to each person to be responsible for themselves and others.
Sightings are not guaranteed: cetaceans are in their natural habitat.
Thank you for your review.
