I signed up for the West tour followed by the East tour. Firstly, it gets cold! You’re driving up to 1500-1800 m. The jeeps are open top and the wind whips through the vehicle. Do bing a warm jacket or fleece and a hat.
The drivers are fun, crack a lot of jokes, play little games with the vehicle, gun the engine etc. I loved going up steep hills and quickly motoring down as if the Jeep was going to fly off the cliff.
Madeira is beautiful and all the stops had beautiful scenery. I appreciate the fact that Safari Madeira supports local business in out of the way spots. Good on you! Plus, the home made cake was tasty ,—-the home made brew wasn’t (LOL).
If you are fortunate to sit in the front seat, you’ve hit the jackpot since you will be sheltered from the cold and wind. But most importantly, you will be able to see the landscape you're being driven through.
Having sat in the front for the West and in the back for the East I recommend Safari Madeira discount the back bench seats. One sees absolutely nothing unless one is very short or very tall. Most of us had to hunch over uncomfortably to peer out the front or side windows. Secondly, with 4 people sitting 2x2 facing each other, be prepared to knock knees.
If you stand up for a view, there’s not enough floor space to balance with your feet braces apart. If all 4 of you stand up, you’re in each other’s way and being thrown into each other (all part of the fun on the off road experience).
Also, with the open top you will get rained on with the West tour (spoiler alert). Bring a towel.
I would give the tour a solid 4* if you can sit on a regular seat and a 3* or less for the back bench seats because you miss all of the scenery.
Lunches. The West lunch at the Orca restaurant in Porto Moniz was average in taste and took a long time to serve (combo of short staffed and super busy with tours). Ergo, no time to explore where you are. For the East tour, some of us brought our lunch or ate in one of the restaurants. I heard the East restaurant the tour drops you at was better than the Orca restaurant on the West tour.
To sum up. This is a great way to explore a beautiful island and get a feeling for the steep roads and lovely houses.

We were very unlucky with the weather with often torrential rain for the first few hours. The summit was a complete ‘wash out’, we even had hail and the drive up a little hairy. However the whole time our guide Fillipe was funny and knowledgeable, keeping our spirits high even when we saw very little. The weather cleared a little and the rest of the trip was great, amazing views and a good value lunch. I recommend checking the weather as the jeep with the roof closed in rain is a little uncomfortable especially if you are taller that 5’7. However it is a great way to see the island and the guides were great fun at all the stops and really enjoyed their job and you can’t help but have a great time!

Despite a little rain and fog at the start, our driver Filipe provided everyone with excellent commentary throughout the tour. After taking the winding drive up the mountain (you may want to bring a jacket at 1,400 meters), we proceeded to go "off-road" down the north side towards Santana. Along the way we learned much about the flora of Madeira while making several stops along the way.
Since entire group had opted to forego lunch in order to maximize our time, when we reached Santana, most us grabbed a light snack to carry us through. The remaining tour drove us along the north and eastern side of the island and afforded us some absolutely amazing views!

We booked this trip via Safari Maderia's website.
First of all, the weather wasn't great up on the peaks when we did this tour. Due to this being out of Safari Madeira's control, I've tried my best to ignore that aspect with this review.
We were picked up by our driver/guide at the hotel and then slowly made our way up to Pico do Areeiro. The open top 4x4 we were in was very old (mid 1990s) and really struggled to get up the hills whilst filling the interior with fumes. It started raining and the driver put the roof on for us.
Whilst the locations we visited as part of the tour were well worth seeing, we do not feel like we gained much information from the tour guide. Instead it felt like a taxi tour going from one place to the next, with small bits of information thrown in every now and again - more of a token gesture rather than giving us a real insight into Madeira and its history. For parts of the day, we all sat in silence in the 4x4.
Due to the weather, we only had a 10 minute offroading experience. I believe this is usually 40 minutes.
Highlights of the trip were the lunch which was reasonably priced at 10 euros for a 3 course meal along with the Rum factory stop in the afternoon.
This review could have been more positive, however we took a 4x4 experience with another company the following day (this time to the west of Madeira) and to be honest, it was in a different league.
We fed back to Safari Madeira and were happy with the resolution we received. I have no doubt that it was probably a combination of the weather and the tour guide that was the downfall of this day trip. Safari Maderia's customer service made it up to us.

I will try to be constructive in my review.
First of all, I will point out that they are selling these as en “off road” trip, the off road part of these 7 hour trip last for 20 minutes. Rest of the time you are on the road with all the other minibuses. They just have it a lot more comfortable.
Start
The driver pick us up at the hotel. In are case they took 10 euros extra for that service.
It started good, until we find out that we are goving to be seven people inside a short version of and old Nissan Patrol with almost no horse power. (Not to be confused with the long version).
We ended up in a Portuguese group. Even we don’t speak Portuguese. The driver spoked mostly on Portuguese, even if he new how to speak English.
So when we stopped at the attractions, he could tell us about it in to sentences. And then speak about in Portuguese for 15 minutes.
I also asked him to translate. But He just laugh.
(If I wanted to listen to Portuguese for 8 hours, I would taken the bus.)
But other then these, he was very friendly. And tried his best. So thank you for that V ;)
The car struggles up the mountain while its begging to be put out of its misery.
Lunch time, and the safari company have a deal with a restaurant that we are forced to eat at. You pay 10 euros for the dinner, but it was not good. The safari company probably get some kickback. That is the only way that restaurant can get costumers.
I can see that many people have given these trip 5 out 5. But I don’t agree. And I will say that the people given these high rating, have a very low standard of expectation.
These is a cash cow for owners, and we should expect something better. For 45 euros you can rent a motorbike for 2 days, I also done these. I will recommend to do that instead.
Have good stay, Madeira is beautiful, doesn’t matter how you get around :)

After the North West tour, we were so satisfied, that we booked this tour too. Luckily we were able to get the same driver, Marco, who we really recommend. He is doing his job really well and makes your trip unforgettable. He shows you the real background of Madeira and knows the best places to take you to. The Jeep is able to go to the places, where cars cannot go. That brings another advantage - you can enjoy some places without many other tourists. That´s why it is better than renting a car on your own. There were a possibility to order lunch - the driver booked it for us and we only paid 15€ for a three course meal.

Hello, everyone! Such an amazing experience, wasn’t expecting that at first 🤩 Highly recommend to try it once in a life time👌I think, the success of the excursion mostly depends on the guide - if he’s passionate about his job and is living every bit of what he is doing, than tourists get most of the advantage from the excursion. So we were lucky with the charming guide and safe driver James🥰 Thank You, James, for showing us the most of the Madeira - jungle, tricky roads, wonderful coast, clouds, red sand, old house and ... Your passion for your job! For those who are still thinking whether to try it or not - pack your backpacks, step in your shoes and go! Good luck everyone! 🙌 Get most of it 😉

First day visiting maderia and certainly won't be the last. The east tour was unreal, the sights seemed surreal & like I was in another world. What an unbelievable experience and the tour guide was very informative / friendly. Made me and my partner feel very comfortable.
My only downside would be the restaurant food (you're given the option to eat out for lunch in Santana, not mandatory) €15 for 3 course which doesn't seem too bad but the food seemed very bland and basic. I would say if you're vegetarian or vegan especially it will not be enjoyable. Again, this has nothing to do with the tour directly and it's all your own option, just a bit of info for anyone who's thinking of eating here! The rum factory is small and not really our cup of tea but I can see how some people who are into rum & history might find it a bit more interesting. Speaking of rum tasting, the coffee liqueur tasters in the Santana house is a must! The flavours really knocked my taste buds back, delicious. If I had to pick a favourite spot I couldn't as they're all equally beautiful.

First of all, Diego (our guide) was an absolute legend! He was completely hilarious and always provided interesting commentary. It’s safe to say we learnt lots about Madeira and the places we visited in exquisite detail. Our group was composed of many different nationalities, and ever-talented Diego slipped seamlessly between English, French and German to provide everyone with information about the island he evidently cares so much about. It’s clear he is incredibly passionate about his job; including getting us free samples at the rum factory (shots challenge hello??)!! The places we visited on the tour were spectacular, from high in the mountains, to green luscious valleys and the stunning coastline: you really get to see Madeira in all its glory. The 4x4 jeep and Diego’s brilliant off-roading took us to places impenetrable at a first glance. This tour is a must; not only to see all the highlights of the island but to connect with your guide and group members, and of course to talk to Madeiran goats in their native language (buhhhhhhh)!!!!

We did the whole day tour and our driver-guide was Miguel. For the first two hours we were the only passengers and then for the rest of the day we were joined by another couple. Miguel drove us through some of the wilder forest dirt tracks with amazing skill, then up to the mountains above the cloud layers. Stunning vistas wherever we went. We did a short levada walk to Balcoes to feed the finches by hand and later stopped in Santana. The owner of the traditional house we went inside was born there but had in fact returned from living in Venezuala and we had a great chat in Spanish about his family history. A very reasonable meal followed by a vist to the rum factory - neither of us drinks to this was the least interesting part of the day for us, but the surrounding scenery and sur beach made up for it. A final stop on the extreme east of the island made for a great day out. Well worth doing a whole day rather than the half day excursions.

Ich wollte soeben die Tour buchen.
Was muss ich bei Hafen und Ausschiffungszeit usw. an geben? Werde ich nicht mit dem Jeep vom Hotel abgeholt?
I tried to reserve 2 tickets for 3/10/22 but the form requires cruise ship details. I am not a cruise ship passenger. I put in my hotel but the form still had an error because no cruise information. Is this tour only for cruise passengers?

If you're the first one(s) to be picked up then you can choose your seats. Otherwise you'll have to either ask the driver and the travellers sitting there, or better yet mention it beforehand so the driver knows to reserve those seats for you.
