- K6076OCalanc0 contributionsGreat small group tour of the West side of Madeira. We had a great time on this tour. Our tour guide, John was amazingly knowledgeable about the island and all the places we visited. We had ample time at each stop to go explore or shop. We were picked up at a location very near our apartment, there were a large number of available pick up locations. The wave pools were closed on the day we visited there due to wave heights. We had plenty of time to get lunch and a gelatto and just sit and enjoy the power of the waves impacting the coast. We highly recommend this tour based on the group size, the route and the knowledge of the guide.Written March 14, 2025
- kmhe5170 contributionsInteresting sceneryAn interesting tour with 3 stops to see the views and the mountains. Our driver and guide was very helpful and gave us a lot of interesting information during the trip.Written March 7, 2025
- kevindO9770YM0 contributionsGreat rainbow view over valley!Bruno (think it was him- with a pony tail) was highly knowledgeable and humorous- we really enjoyed the 3 locations- the first stop at the top of the valley look-out was spectacular- would recommend this as a very pleasant afternoon. Thank you for a great trip!Written March 4, 2025
- grahamr450 contributionsGreat tourJust got back to our hotel after the afternoon Nuns Valley tour & could not fault it in any way. The driver ( sorry can't remember your name) was so good he explained everything & made the tour a joy. If we can get him again we would definitely go on another tour. Well doneWritten March 4, 2025
- AngMacleod0 contributionsGot time to kill go for the stroll through the markets!A real local market, loved the vibe! When we finally got to the parking lot parking was only .50 cents!! It’s definitely a local spot, typical flee market style, we enjoyed it greatly!Written March 3, 2025

- alisoni6840 contributionsA wet walk with a lovely tour guideThe tour itself was truncated by very poor weather and visibility. We got soaked but the lovely tour guide, Robi, made the day interesting with much information and good humour. We had an unscheduled lunch stop in Cahleta to dry off in the sun.Written February 27, 2025
- Cindy F0 contributionsThis trip should be cancelled when the weather is bad like other excursions such as tours of the East. No visibility. This trip did not meet our expectations. Because of poor weather conditions we could not see the Valley of the Nuns from the viewpoint at all. Our guide was also very monotone and did not even try to still make the trip fun. This was a total waste of money.Written February 24, 2025
- evgeniy_zaichuk0 contributionsPorte do Monis in FebruaryA stunning views of Madeira landscape, ocean, plato and natural pool in Porte do Monis. The weather and temperature was very comfy during this time. A tour guidance by Joao from Lido was also great.Written February 23, 2025
- gregppower0 contributionsA relaxing way to see the highlights of the east of this mountainous islandThis was our third tour of the week with Lido. The West on 11th February and Levada Walk on 13th. My wife and I were fortunate to again have Marco as our driver & tour guide and a front seat in the mini-bus! First stop was Pico de Arieiro at 1810 metres, it was 0 degrees so warm clothing essential. From there we descended with excellent commentary on the surrounding landscape and highlighting the many fruits and vegetables cultivated on the fertile land. Pleasant coffee stop at Ribeiro Frio and good restaurant for lunch in Santana. All in all in the time allocated for the tour there were plenty of highlights. The tour was value for money and Lido’s communication via what’s app on pick up times etc also very good. We have no hesitation in recommending this tour.Written February 21, 2025
- 31margitv0 contributionsDon´t miss this tour!!We went to Madeira East tour by Madeira-Island-Tours. It was one of the best tours I´ve ever had in Madeira, where I´ve visited 20 times. The driver was a good guide at the same time and told us in a very interesting way from every place we visited. Don´t You miss this tour!!Written February 18, 2025
- John L0 contributionsGreat trip to see Mimosa and local flora and fauna. The Mimosa Valley walk was well planned. We walked to pickup spot and were soon on our way with our guide and driver in a minibus. There were 5 of us. The walk was better than I expected following a path through domestic vegetable plots with our guide explaining about the varieties of fruits and vegetables growing. We saw lots of Mimosa flowers on the trees. It’s about 5km with a cafe at the end and time for a pit stop before heading back. Great value, with a knowledgeable and considerate guide, multilingual switching from German to English to Portuguese fluidly. Worth every penny!Written February 15, 2025
- bradhU3999MA0 contributionsCovers ground, but under whelming. This tour does cover some ground and is a decent introduction to places you may want to go back to, but I did not feel it was the best way for me to spend the day. It is a lot of van time and there are some interesting stops, but for me, more of an outdoor lover, it was not a great. There were others on the trip that where older and perhaps less energetic and they seemed to enjoy it. It does provide a great way to see the scenery around the Eastern island.Written February 13, 2025
- bradhU3999MA0 contributionsYou won't break a sweat, but it is a great walk! Highly recommend. This is a great walk. The route is designed to start high and ends at a lower elevation. This walk is called moderate. It does include some sections of steps, but it is not really a moderate hike. It is heavily used and mostly on rock paths. The waterfalls are fantastic and there is plenty of time to view the sites. The pace is leisurely and allows for picture taking. This is really a walk, not so much a hike, but it covers beautiful grounds and was a great day. My guide, Lillyanne or Leeanne???, was fantastic. I am sorry I do not remember her name. She is a naturalist, knew the history, the plants, was patient, conversational, really fantastic. If you have a chance to learn from her, I recommend it.Written February 13, 2025

My wife and I booked 3 tours with Lido for our trip to Madeira this year. Having never used them before I wondered if booking a few weeks in advance online was a bit of a risk. I need not have worried, Lido Tour’s were brilliant giving swift emailed confirmation with good details of time and location for pick up. Charlotte was our guide for 2 of the 3 days and was excellent. She amazed us with her seemingly endless number of languages that she was fluent in. Keeping everyone safe was paramount and she was careful with briefings and making sure we all kept together. We loved the Madeira peaks walk, they do mark this walk as hard, and it was. Almost every step of the 12 km was an either up or down steps, so quite demanding but very rewarding. If you are looking for a less demanding walk the Laramo coastal walk was wonderful, and not many other people on it which was a bonus. Booking online in advance is a good way of ensuring you can book the walks that you want as they get booked up pretty quickly, if you leave it until you arrive in Madeira many will already be booked. We would recommend Lido Tours and would definitely use them next time.

Be careful, bring warm clothes, the weather is often foggy, even if you are going to burn off calories, bring water and something to snack on. There are a lot of stone steps to go down, and the last half hour is rather technical as you have to climb quite steep steps. This route is not easy if you have difficulty and if you are not very used to walking. It’s a mountain hike and you shouldn’t forget that. My advice is to do it with a small group of 10 people with a guide, because you go from one peak to another peak and we are waiting for you in a mini bus (for me I couldn't see myself turning around at all! ) taxis are waiting if necessary

Lido were excellent in all respects. Communication was timely and useful. The pick up was on time and in a comfortable air-conditioned minibus. Charlotte our tour leader made sure that all the members of the group were well looked after, she set the expectations of the walk early on, so that we all understood the challenges to be faced. It was an unusually very hot day that we completed the walk on and I was impressed that Charlotte kept the whole group focussed on the task in a very safe way. She is clearly also passionate about geology as she clearly explained how the island was formed.
If you are used to walking in the mountains this walk will present no difficulty at all. Most of it is roughly paved to protect the ground and there are many guide ropes. The "up" sections of the walk were quite strenous, although this was made worse by the heat. There were metal steps in the steepest parts. The views were fabulous and it is a walk that we would readily repeat. Spring and summer are the best times to complete it. We were told that it isn't always walkable in winter as there can be snow and ice, not to mention high winds.
Once you reach Pico Ruivo, the walk is then easy and relatively flat to the end at Acheo do Texeira, taking less than an hour. There are refreshment and toilet opportunities at both ends and also at Pico Ruivo (although this is more rudimentary and I would think refreshments would depend on the time of year) The whole walk takes about 5 hours including an hour for lunch at Pico Ruivo.
We walked in hiking boots but in summer, stout trainers would be ok. There are a few short tunnels which were quite wet with puddles. Phone torches were sufficient to light the way. On the day we completed it, the weather was hot and we got through a couple of litres of water each. A backpack is a must for your lunch and water. You should also to carry a jacket as the weather can be very changeable in the mountains.

Booked on Monday evening for the Wednesday full day hike across the Madeira peaks at the Lido tours office.
They failed to tell us that that you couldn't walk between the 1st and 3rd mountains due to storm damage the previous weekend which is fair enough.
But to not tell us upfront and take our money felt wrong.
At least we could have made an informed decision whether to still go ahead with booking it.
We only found out this information as we were picked up and told by the guide that it would be a much shorter hike.
This does leave you feeling deceived and short changed paying full price for half the service

This hike is a challenge but great fun and Zara was a fantastic guide who lets you take things at your own speed whilst ensuring you make it safely to the end.
She makes some tough sections more fun than they would otherwise be and her knowledge of the hike is second to none.
The hike as a whole is one of stunning view points and the whole way through there is always something to take your attention. It is like walking through a set of postcards. I would highly recommend this hike for those who want to do more than a gentle stroll and the photos are amazing.

Fantastic experience
Our guide and driver were very helpful to everybody who can have limitations ...they pay attention to health problem and give good advises to tourist ( my husband) who can over rate capacities. So you need good cardiovascular conditions, good mobility ( the path are very good but can be slippy if wet, metal rope most of the time between both peaks, tunnel without light so bring a frontal lamp or phone). Dress yourself for all conditions ( wind-cold-cloud-sunshine) so you will be ready for each side of the peaks. The most important thing : you should wear walking boots for good grip, stability et stay dry all the day long. Now enjoy the view as my two sons ( 17 and 21 years old) and I (63 y) did.

This was by far the best excursion we did whilst we visited Madeira. The views were breathtaking!!! The walk itself was a little taxing in places especially the metal steps but it was worth a little sweat to see the surrounding scenery. Our Guide Charlotte was friendly and informative and you really could tell she loved her job pointing out flowers, rock formations and points of interest along the way. Nuno the driver was on time and his skillful driving was a must with traversing windy mountain roads. Overall 10/10 day if I could rate it higher I would.
Book it you won't be disappointed!!!

As others have said this walk requires a good level of fitness and is not for anyone afraid of heights (or walking through tunnels). One of the Lido group on our day dropped out within the first 400 meters and went back to Funchal by taxi as she had not realised what the walk entailed. The walk is demanding for almost the whole walk but the views are stunning. I cannot praise our guide, Ruby, enough and I would not have wanted to attempt this walk without a guide. There is a particularly hard climb towards the end of the walk (before the "house") and she kept us walking as she said too many people's legs go wobbly if they stop for a picnic break before this climb. We picnicked at the house after the climb and I can confirm that we would have struggled with the climb had we stopped before. I recommend Lido tours who were easy to deal with and ensured our safety throughout. Some of the ledges and steps are quite narrow/difficult for people to pass each other and we welcomed having our guide to negotiate who had right of way! We did 2 x moderate walks with Lido before we attempted this one as it was classified as "difficult" - many thanks to Sara, our excellent guide on the earlier walks, for approving that we were fit enough for this one. If your not sure if you are fit enough, I'd recommend one of the moderate walks first (such as Fanal Forest) and then asking the guide for an honest assessment as to whether you would manage this one! (P.S. Ensure you take plenty of water and you will need change if you want to use the loos at the start of the hike).

This one is a hit or miss. We left sunny Funchal only to arrive at cold, misty and windy mountain area. Guide Charlotte was very professional, we made a group decision to take the hike anyway, she made sure we have proper clothing to continue. People were able to turn around and leave with the driver after like 15mins of “test hike”, however all of us continued. After sometime clouds broke out, so we were able to admire the views, it’s no joke that weather changes there instantly! Definitely be prepared. This hike is physically challenging, I am moderately fit millennial and few places left me out of breath, it’s also heavy on the knees as it’s mostly stairs.
I took 3 hikes with Lido tours and was very happy each time. Professional service, felt very safe with them as solo female traveler.

This was a good way to access the three peaks. Taxis are much more expensive to get to the start of the walk and so this was a much better option for us. My only disappointment was (hence the 4 stars) it felt rushed. Our guide didn't allow much time for taking in the views on the way up and as the path underfoot is rocky I spent a lot of time watching my feet and would have appreciated time to look around. Also when we reached the house we only had an hour if we wanted to get to the top, and as I was a bit slower I felt I didn't have enough time so chose not to. It turned out I would have had plenty of time as we finished the walk early, we were back at least an hour before the allotted time and I felt it was all a bit rushed. That said the views are spectacular and we had a clear and sunny day to enjoy them.

Buenos días, nos gustaría saber si está caminata es de ida y vuelta al punto de inicio o se termina en pico ruivo. Por otro lado se visita freixas. Gracias

Does this tour take guests to Vereda do Areeiro? We want to do a big hike through the tallest, steepest sections of the mountain hiking in Madeira. Happy to walk a long way.

Hi. Is this walk appropriate for 8-10 year old children?

Hi, I think it is around 10km as the crow flys but as you are climbing and descending it is going to be more. The walk takes about 4 hours but with a further hour build in for breaks
