- Roving476775699030 contributionsBe prepared for the weatherWe were skeptical as we were going out in February (the coldest month in Madeira) but aside from a chill towards the end, the trip was solid. Saw some small whales, no dolphins though. For a Feb trip, bring a jacket and wear some good shoes (not sandals); it gets cold if the sun is not out. 🌥️Written February 8, 2025
- Jens V0 contributionsGreat tour, great serviceNice tour and very friendly crew. Everything was easy and smooth. We did not see wildlife and got offered a second tour for free. The second time we saw Dolphins and Whales. Drinks and Cofde on board are reasonably priced. Overall a rewarding experience and excellent customer service.Written February 5, 2025
- Caitlin A0 contributionsDolphin sightings in MadeiraThis was a really lovely experience, we saw two pods of dolphins - and if you didn't see any, you could go again for free another time. The boat was lovely with a big net seating area. Drinks and toilets on boardWritten January 25, 2025
- S4515FTrobertt0 contributionsFantastic catamaran & New Year’s Eve FireworksWe went on the VMT catamaran on New Year’s Eve to see the Funchal fireworks from the harbour. It was really well organised, a beautiful boat (we sat on the top deck with a fantastic view), comfortable and the free bar was great. The fireworks were absolutely amazing, we had never seen anything like it before! The finale was so loud and spectacular and well worth the trip alone. If you do decide to go take a very warm jacket/coat, gloves and a scarf. It’s a lot cooler on a boat than on land.Written January 15, 2025

- 180simonm0 contributionsWonderful Afternoon TripWe reserved this trip the evening before at the marina kiosk. We explained we might not make it due to other trips we had booked. This wasn't a problem. We made it with about 30 minutes to spare!! The trip was really good. The crew were great and answered any questions asked. The catamarans are stable at sea which makes things a lot easier. The view of the sunset on the return was beautiful over the sea. Unfortunately we didn't see any whales or dolphins........ The good this about this is you can book another trip for free if there are no sightings!! This is valid a lifetime.Written January 3, 2025
- Passport3880220 contributionsDisappointed New Year catamaran, read below:Disappointing VMT catamaran 2024/2025 New Year Funchal Fire Works viewing. Unlike in previous years, the Catamaran was positioned, for the duration, in a way that the left half of the fire works were hidden by a huge cruise ship. Very Sad. One will be happier to watch it from land - from any miradouros over Funchal. Save the 130 € per person. Happy New Year. - MarkWritten January 2, 2025

- jch00 contributionsVery disappointing trip.Very disappointing. Left at 10.30am in three hour trip. As they don't use gps to track whales (pods) they were guessing where to go. No sightings. Audio system didn't work if you were up front and €2 for a third of a litre bottle of water was excessive. Toilet was basic. Down a vertical stair, hard to use if elderly. 10 stop for a swim was the only highlight the rather boring three hours. As trip was disappointing, passengers were offered a lifetime free trip in the future. Very fair under circumstances.Written December 2, 2024

- singhasam0 contributionsWatching pilot whalesBRISK, choppy conditions could have turned our catamaran whale and dolphin watching trip with Magic Dolphin into a disaster. Instead it produced a vibrant combination of hilarious incident, swooping passage through the waves and the triumphant spotting of a pod of pilot whales towards the end of our voyage. We arrived on the quay and checked in at the ticket desk before joining scores of other people waiting to go out to sea. We didn't know it at the time but the large size of the catamaran was to play to our advantage and even then it was a wild ride on waves which started at barely a metre but got larger and larger the further we went out until we were rollercoasting down one and up the next. Boarding our catamaran was the usual scrum with eager beavers hustling for what they considered to be the best spot on board. We had the last laugh. By the time we got on board the higher deck was full and all the "best" places near the bows of the main deck were taken by daredevils keen to show they were having a good time. They had no-one to blame but themselves as we left harbour and the captain warned those on the main deck that they might want to move back a bit because conditions meant they might get wet. No-one moved and the rest of us thoroughly enjoyed what happened next. We had barely got out on to the sea proper when there was a thump and a wave came on board right through the thick of those who'd fought for a prominent position. There were shrieks of shock and a good deal of laughter as designer handbags were rescued and cool dudes tried to stay cool as the front of their sporty clothing took a drenching. They weathered that wave but another came and then another until finally the captain's message sank in and the diehards began to drift back to drier seating. By pure luck our seating on the port side seemed slightly drier and we ended up as the most advanced viewpoint although inevitably we got a few facefuls of seawater along the way. A few announcements for people feeling seasick told them not to go to the toilet which would be the worst place for them. The initial fizz and buzz of the drenchings and the swoop up and down waves died away and all focus swung on spotting the marine attractions we had come to see. An hour later and we were still waiting but towards the end a tip came in and we joined another group shadowing a pod of pilot whales. The captain followed correct modern protocol to give us our photo opportunity but not to stay too long that we made the whales uncomfortable with our presence. Full marks there. Almost before we knew it we were skimming back to Funchal at the end of a wonderful day we enjoyed for all the right reasons. Overall the catamaran had good facilities including drinks and toilets while the crew was very professional and very knowledgeable about marine life Top marks for the Magic Dolphin....and watch out you don't get soaked too!!Written November 13, 2024

We decided on the basis of the previous reviews for the great 9h tour to the Ilhas Desertas.
The crew conveyed calm throughout the catamaran and acted professionally. The excursion can be roughly described in 3h steps: Outbound journey, stay, return journey. Before Deserta Grande, the nearly 60 tourists were brought ashore by dinghy to explore the short circular route to the history of the reserve and the animal species native to it. After a short stay on the rocky beach we went back to the catamaran. Again there was the possibility to swim in the sea before lunch was served. The buffet offers something for every taste.
So far so good... What we liked rather less were the facts that from arrival on Deserta Grande everything was very timed and you had little time to enjoy and let the experience itself work. The return journey, as well as the outward journey, was accompanied by subtle music. Here we lacked some motivation from the crew. If you looked around on the catamaran, many slept, or were more or less bored. Small intricacies would already have a big effect here...
A small example of this: We saw several seabirds similar to the breeding breeds on the island. A short insightful explanation by the crew and you learned something new again and the dull ride over the wet blue would be more entertaining.
Highlight on the ride itself:
Shortly before entering the home port of Funchal we could see bottlenose dolphins swimming past. The engine turned off allowed relatively close approach to the shy animals, which were then briefly named and described by the crew.
Conclusion: We don't regret the trip. A little more commitment from the organizer would be desirable.

We did a block of 3 cruises...this one, a sunset cruise and a daytime dolphin cruise.
The catamaran was clean, staff were polite and informative and there was a small bar selling a few drinks and snacks reasonably priced.
The only downside to the Desertas cruise is the 2½ hours it takes to get there and the large, rocky beach area. They should warn you that you will get wet feet and possibly up to your knees when they put you in a dinghy to land you on the beach.
We felt with the daytime dolphin cruise they out too many passengers on and it's hard to watch the dolphins and whales.
Overall a wonderful experience watching the pilot whales, spotted dolphins and, on the island cruise, the endangered monk seals.

Bit of confusion at first, we pre booked before we left the UK - our online booking said arrive at marina for 9am - we checked the day before at the booking office - they said we had to be there for 8:30 - good job we checked! It is a 2 and a half hour trip to Desertas Island - lovely calm crossing with loads of dolphins - but after the 4th or 5th sighting I felt we didn't need to keep stopping again... just my personal opinion. Not sure it is really worth going to Desertas - you walk around a little route - with the guide reading out the boards of information that are dotted around to you - then you spend "ages" on a rocky "beach" - we did take the offer up of kayaking around the cove a bit as we were bored by this time - the water was FRESH. Lunch was lovely - lots of choice and the crew were all lovely and relaxed - no blaring music - nice chilled day - but then we really were chilled on the way back - it was FREEZING - take lots of layers with you....

This catamaran trip is a scam, aiming to get money out of tourists at all cost!
To start with, we were told to bring only ourselves and a swimsuit, everything else will be provided on board (food, water, drinks and shelter) and we should look forward to a nice sunny ride with a visit to the dessert island where we will do a hike around the island, snorkling, paddleboarding and lots of swimming. We were also promissed a delicious hight quality lunch on board with plenty of options for all..
Now the reality.. the weather condition were very bad that day, extremely windy already in the morning, so they knew it wasn't going to be a pleasant drive and yet they went ahead with it, instead of cancelling or postponing the trip!
There was absolutely no shelter from the strong winds, it was extremely cold and wet the entire almost 3hrs ride both ways.. i had 4 layers on me including a rain jacket and a big towel wrapped around me and still i was shiverring and could not keep my eyes open as the wind and splashes of water was getting to my eyes..
There were people who got unwell, others curled up on the plastic benches holding tight to their loved ones, trying to protect each other from the cold and wind..
After we sufferred through the first part of the trip and set foot on the dessert island, the "hiking" begun which was literraly a 100m circular walk.. you could not move around the island by yourself due to danger of a landslide.. has anyone mentioned it before at the time of booking this trip? No, of course not.
Ok, so let's do the snorkling we thought.. there are lots of rocks and crystal clear water, there must be a lot to see under water.. another dissapointment, we were not allowed to snorkel anywhere near the rocks as apparantly last month a piece of rock fell directly on a tourist's neck and got injured.. whaaat? If it's that dangerous to snorkle there, then why are you taking us there and advirtise it as a wonderful snorkling experience??? We were literally told at the time of booking that it was a great place to snorkle.. in the end, we were limited to snorkle by the tiny beach in an area of about 50sqm and instead of colourful fish you could observe the tourists feet under water :)
After this "wonderful" experience and 5 hours into our trip, we finally got to have our lunch which was a buffet with the option of cold slices of pork or cold piece of very dry fish and a "salad" that consisted of two ingrediens, tomato and cucamber.
Needless to say, we came back from this trip totally exhausted, frozen to bone, dissapointed and frustrated.. it was a waste of money and a wasted day.
I do not recommend this trip to anyone, honestly.

This trip was not worth €80 euros each or €320 for a family of 4! The journey to the island took 3 hours. Once at the island, what we had been told by the rep selling us the trip, would be a hike around the island was actually a 10 minute walk around 5/6 information boards with the guide explaining what they said. You could not hike/walk around the island and the photographs on their promotional leaflet are very misleading as it shows people setting off on a walk. We then had about an hour for lunch/paddle boarding and snorkelling. Then it was another 3 hours to return back to Funchal. The staff were lovely and very helpful, and the buffet lunch was good. However, I would not recommend this trip as it is overpriced and we have just been on the jeep safari today which was half the price and so much better!

I took this trip yesterday and it was a lovely, lovely day - enhanced by a wonderful crew and pleasant fellow passengers. It did not go as planned, but that was fine. Read on!
There was too little wind to sail to the schedule but this catamaran is a joy whatever. The distances are huge for a day trip so it's unlikely that sails are going to do it.
There had been a landslip close to the landing beach, triggered by the recent volcanic activity on La Palma. This would have restricted access to a small patch surrounding the huts, hardly fulfilling.
Luckily we never got there. The first beach party had to return because the waves on the beach were too much of a risk, most passengers wearing clothes and not swimware.
Hence we enjoyed the swimming, paddleboards and kayaks (informal instruction and encouragement provided) and lunch was brought forward - a really excellent meal that included fabulous espada and unlimited drinks.
To make up for the lack of a shore visit, we left our mooring early and followed the cliffs for miles northwards of the landing spot. The colours and shapes of the cliffs are extraordinary and I was mesmerised. Eventually, right up abeam the northern-most island of ChĂŁu, we headed back towards Funchal.
It wasn't long before we encountered our first pod of pilot whales. Three times we diverted, slowed and spent lots of time quietly and safely shadowing these whales and we all got some great pics.
So how so I account for a full nine hours aboard? It was sunny and warm even in October (usually in a shirt but I did need a fleece and jacket at rare times). I watched the world go by, snoozed, read, ate, chatted. Bored? Cold? Never.
It really was a lovely day. Thank you so much, Antonio and crew.

The islands themselves are unique experience but there are just about 200 m to walk, so basically it is one-time experience. And it was totally ruined by VMT. I live on Madeira for about 4 months now and my windows are overlooking Desertas Islands - so I see that most of the time its beautiful weather there. And trip in such weather should be amazing.
However we were stupid enough to prepay the trip and on the day the weather was terrible. The cruise should have been cancelled but VMT would lose money. So when the crew put on heavy wind breakers I realized we are in trouble. (they tell you to bring warm clothes but I would never had SO warm clothes on Madeira). On catamaran there are no place to hide from the rain, wind and splashes of waves and crew was lazy to put down covers. I was literally hiding in a tiny cabin near washrooms otherwise I would be completely wet. And with the wind it was cold enough to get sick if you are wet.
But the crew was bold enough to put a can with a huge black letters TIPS and directly requested tips after the trip. We paid 80 EURO each so I would expect the crew is paid well enough.
Again – Islands are worth visiting, but do not do prepayment – just walk in on the day (they have enough spots). Also – choose Bonita (another ship) – there you would have closed cabin to hide from bad weather.

It was the worst trip in catamaran of my life.
Three hours to get to the islands. When we got there they said that it was not possible to do the proper visit as there was risk of land spades, then they basically had us three hours stuck in the boat , and another three hours to go back.
The worst was that they said they just received a call alerting them about the risk when we got to the island, but one of them said that this was happening for weeks so they knew and they took us there besides the risk and knowing since the beginning that they can’t give us what we paid for.
So disappointed and a day wasted.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write a review. I'm sorry that you were desappointed with the trip. Desertas Islands are a natural reserve and they are not really close to Funchal, so the trip takes 3 hours there and back. All of the 3 islands, including Deserta Grande, (the island that we are allowed to visit), have a steep relief and not much vegetation, and sometimes landlslides occur. It's not something new, but on the given day, wasn't expected. We had gone there 3 days before and there weren't any landlsides. When the Forest Rangers, the authorities on the local, informs us that is not possible to go on land for safety reasons, we have to comply, despite the the disappointment it may cause us and our guests. Despite that, people could still go for a swim, snorkeling and do paddle board. After that, the lunch was served.
I'm sorry that you feel that your day was wasted. I hope that nonetheless you enjoyed your time in Madeira. Best regards, VMT Madeira Team

Great experiences on the water: we saw different whales and dolphins on the ride (2x3hours). The crew willingly stopped and explained a lot. There was a two-hour stay on the island. The only thing that could be improved is snorkeling for everyone. They had to be shared with strangers. There was even lunch on the way back. Very successful and a great conclusion to my trip

Amazing trip! We were advised to bring jackets, which were needed during the boat journey due to the open sea and winds. The boat ride itself was very pleasant. The trip onto Desertas Island was very informative, and we really enjoyed the conservation of the island. There was plenty of free time to enjoy water sports, if desired.
Lunch was provided, buffet style, which was plentiful. As a vegan, I was very impressed with the care given - I was given a band indicating dietary needs, and I was given a vegan burger as the main (to go with the buffet vegetable selection).
On the way back, we were fortunate enough to see 3 species of marine life - Dolphins, Pilot Wales and a Sperm Whale.
An amazing day, with a great crew!
