- RobinWFood0 contributionsEscapeIn an attempt to escape the tourists, I hid in an aquarium. I sprawled on a bench, accompanied by ambient music, and hypnotically observed the underwater forest created by the Japanese artist Takashi Amano. Just as I felt my soul leaving my body and entering Amano's world, a pack of Spanish children burst in, shattering my zen. I took a deep breath and went down a floor, among the penguins. "This is it, peace," I thought. But soon, I was surrounded by a sea of Portuguese retirees. They were quiet, but everywhere. I headed towards the sharks, but there they were again! Blocking the view. I quickly rushed to Nemo and Dory, only to find four grannies already forming a living wall. I fled to the restroom, but even there, there was no escape – I was caught by a generation with prostate problems. Realizing there was no escape, I hurried to the gift shop. "Surely, given their pensions, they won't follow me here," I concluded. And indeed, they gave up. I picked up a cap, but the price – 30 €! "This must have been set up by that old man Jorge with the cane, whom I had pushed aside near the seahorses." I put the cap back under the security guard’s stern gaze and sheepishly exited. Of course, they were waiting for me outside. Smiling, waving at me. And I could swear that Jorge, as he passed by, gave me a conspiratorial wink.Written September 24, 2024

We had Rita as our guide. First of all I want to concgatulate the Ocenario for making possible and so accessible as costs such a guided visit. I was amazing. Then, congratulation for such a committed, lot of knowlegde, responsible and pleasant employee, guide Rita. I spent some amazingly enjoyable hours with her. Lots of explanations, she answered to all our questions, passed a lot of value. Thank YOU, Rita and Lisbon Ocenario!!!!Written July 14, 2024
- dgU7967XK0 contributionsGood aquarium but definitely a tourist "trap"There is a two story tank filled with many different species including on of the largest rays that we have ever seen in an aquarium. However, having been to many aquariums in the US, I was really a little disappointed with this one. The main tank may be the "largest in Europe" but if you're from the US, save your money. We have much better aquariums here.Written May 27, 2024

The main central aquarium is fantastic with lots to see with a nice and reasonably priced restaurant on site. The Lisbon Oceanarium is great.. our 4 years old son visited it 3 times already since the reopening after confinement. The price is high and yesterday we opted for the family ticket (better value) but we had a terrible experience since the place was packed with people.. the temporary exhibitions had monitors at their entrance and were crowd controlled, also they had audio announcements reminding people for COVID situation. HOWEVER the the main building was packed with people and empty of staff what made the visit very stressful and not enjoyable at all if not dangerous.

We booked tickets online in advance. There was 5 of us, highly recommend doing this if you visit to skip the queue.
However when we got there we watched about 4 coaches of school children queueing to get in. Inside it was absolutely packed, it was so hard to enjoy anything because you were constantly waiting to get to the point someone moved so you could actually see it.
On top of that rivers of school children kept going around us and in front of us.
It's a place that could be very interesting to visit but the sheer amount of people they allow in completely ruined the experience.
Our tickets were for 11am on a Monday, so not even a weekend or a national holiday just your average day.

The Lisbon Oceanarium is a fun way to spend a couple of hours, especially if you're there with kids. They will love seeing the sharks and rays and other variety of fish, plus they have penguins and sea otters that love to put on a show in the water. We purchased the combo ticket that gave you entrance to the aquarium as well as the gondola ride overlooking the water and the city, this was a lot of fun to get a bird's eye view of the surrounding area. There is also a garden and a bunch of great restaurants just a short walk from the aquarium. You can take the gondola there too.

Very interesting exhibitions, there are a wide range of different habitats beautifully presented. We had a very enjoyable morning at the aquarium. We had pre booked tickets and I would recommend doing this and arriving at opening time, you have a separate, shorter queue if you have already paid. We went January mid week and there were a few school groups being shown around but it was not too crowded, was getting busier by the time we left. Definitely worth visiting.

The offer of reduced tickets (€7.50 instead of €25) during the month of September is of course going to attract lots of visitors, but the staff have done nothing to prevent overcrowding. There are two time slots, 5pm and 6pm. When we arrived early at 5:30, we asked where we would need to queue for the 6pm entry, and a member of staff said we could go straight in and the time slot didn’t matter. So there was no attempt to manage numbers. As a result, it was difficult to see many of the beautiful fish/animals without having to queue or being pushed up against lots of people. They need to keep to the time slots but also establish a capacity limit for the aquarium during September. It spoils the experience for everyone, especially for vulnerable people i.e. disabled, elderly, neurodivergent or those who suffer from claustrophobia/social anxiety.

Very not worth the price,
Don't visit on raining days as its so full with people that it is a horrible experience.
Don't buy online tickets until you are at the door, the line for o line tickets was over 100m long and the buy the tickets line was 20m. I blame management for the very slow pace of the online ticket line. A tip is to wait to buy the online ticket until you are at the door, also ignore the time slot on the online tickets it is not relevant.
About the exposition I have seen better at cheeper price's, honestly not impressed but disappointed for the ticket price, also the gift shop disappointing and very expensive..

I had read that this was the largest aquarium in Europe but it seems that is not true and it's the 3rd (after one in Valencia and one in France). Still, it was highly rated and the weather was going to be spotty that day so we decided to go last minute to have some indoor time. We didn't buy tickets ahead of time, in case there were issues getting there.
Parking was difficult. We got there around 11am and the couple parking lots we found were all full. We just happened to find a parking spot on a street (the meter to pay was around the corner and that was confusing) but it was dumb luck. Don't forget to pay if you do find street parking - we saw two cars with boots and tape.
The line to get in the aquarium was crazy long. So we waited in it. Turns out, that line was if you already had tickets. You didn't know that until you got to the front and an 8.5x11 sheet of paper tapped up said so. So we had to get in another line to buy the tickets. Still, despite the long lines, everything moved steadily and I think it only took us about 40 minutes to get in.
You have to walk across a large walkway to get to the actual aquarium. We went to the aquarium and realized taking the double jogging stroller inside with our twins would be difficult. There were about 4 other strollers parked right inside so we put ours with the rest. At the end of our time there, when we wanted to leave, our stroller was gone. Thankfully, there was an attendant nearby who took us to a room where they had stored all the strollers. One of our kids was having a meltdown in that moment and if we hadn't been able to find our stroller so quickly, I would have been scathing mad.
Because of the mass amount of people, the place was always crowded. It's like when the built the place, they didn't anticipate people wanting to actually attend in droves so it was built standard-aquarium size. With twin toddlers, who don't want to stand still for too long, waiting for people to clear away from the small sections of windows or fenced off viewing areas wasn't something we could do very often. We barely saw anything and I really don't remember much of what we saw because I was CONSTANTLY losing my kids in the crowd (even with my husband taking one kid & me taking the other) because they were small enough to walk between legs in the crowds.
I really wanted to like the aquarium and it was a cool building (outside) but just the mass number of people made it truly a bad experience, specifically with young kids.
We went to the cafeteria afterwards & had lunch. It was good but nothing to write home about, which is standard for food in a facility like that.

We went near opening time which we regretted as it was so busy, probably due to the bad weather. The aquarium stays open until 7PM and so I'd recommend going in the late afternoon/early evening to beat the crowds.
The aquarium itself is great, lots of variety, well presented and the central tank is very impressive. The only place I've seen a better one is in Dubai.
A great attraction but it IS very crowded which unquestionably detracts from it,

The aquarium was amazing. They had penguins, otters, huge sharks, lots of fish, a whole section on recycling which looked like lots of fun for little children, cafes and a really big shop! Very near to a shopping centre and lots of lovely restaurants nearby to which we went to afterwards. We walked around in about an hour but it was just two of us, if you were a family you could definitely make a couple hours of it. It was one of the biggest and best aquariums I’ve been to with great views of the fish and sharks. We booked an aquarium and cable car entry ticket and the cable car is just next to the aquarium which I would recommend doing that afterwards too.

One large fishtank in the center with lots of large fish (sharks & sting rays) & schools of smaller fish. Walking path on 2 levels around the central large tank with smaller tanks on the oposite side of the walkway.
Nice aquarium but e.g. Barcelona & New Orleans are just as nice or better. 22 Euro entrance fee is (too) high.
Didn't visit the exhibitions in the other building, so have no opinion on those.
The aquarium is situated in the area where once the World Expo was held. It's a 15 mins car drive/20 mins bicycle drive from the Commercio square, so somewhat off the beaten track. It's a bit of a run down area with little other activity (besides a shopping mall). We did the cable cart, but the view is not worth the 9 Euro for 20 mins round trip.

To get the $20.58 ticket price you had to have 4 adults. What do they consider a senior? Is there a different price for seniors?
