- aprilmyers620 contributionsHighly recommendI would highly recommend this tour. It was great to get out of Lisbon and see a different part of Portugal. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable.Written March 19, 2025
- 601erickap0 contributionsWinery and coastal experienceWe were privileged to have Joese take us on our tour to Sintra. He is truly a professional and it shows in how he is treated by others. We were able to see beautiful places, enjoy the wine experience and enjoy his company as well. Highly recommend him.Written March 13, 2025
- thomasbutler100 contributionsExcellent tour with Lisbon on WheelsHad an excellent day with Jose in Arrabida. We ventured to beautiful scenic places. We made the best of it even with some less than desirable weather. Jose was an excellent guide and would recommend again and again.Written March 4, 2025
- radhanTA0 contributionsA once in a lifetime experienceI have traveled to over thirty countries, and this was beyond doubt the best guided tour I have ever experienced. Yes, we saw Regaleira palace, and yes, we went wine-tasting, but that was the *least* of what we did. Traveling with Jose Ribiero is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We learned the history of Portugal, not just as dates when buildings were made, but through stories passed down across generations. From a 19-year-old prince who built a palace that blended the world's cultures, to 200-year-old grape vines that survived the phylloxera attack that destroyed the rest of Europe, we experienced several hundred years of history in a single day. And that wasn't all: we saw secrets of Sintra only the locals know, talked about everything from Voltaire to Nelson Mandela (Jose is a phenomenal conversationalist), and ended up returning at the end of the day lighter and wiser. 5 stars aren't enough.Written February 23, 2025
- Inspire498593404420 contributionsIncredible Tour with Jose!My wife and I had the pleasure of enjoying an all day private tour with our guide, Jose Ribeiro. Jose was incredibly knowledgeable about each site. He is very passionate about Portugese culture and was able to seamlessly tie each destination together into the greater timeline of Portugese history. The tour was indeed an all day affair but went quickly due to the level of engagement that was maintained. Jose provided plenty of education but was not overwhelming in his delivery. This tour stood out as the highlight of our time spent in country.Written January 19, 2025
- Rose M0 contributionsGreat personalized experienced tour guideJose was an incredibly knowledgeable, fun, accommodating guide who took in what we wanted to do, gave us his expert advice, and made it all happen. He had lots of local recommendations and was candid with us when we wanted to either try to do too much or skip places we should see. We'd love to take another adventure with him on our next trip and highly recommend his services.Written January 10, 2025
- 34justinj0 contributionsMore like a day with family than a tour guide! Our tour with Jose through Lisbon on Wheels was absolutely the highlight of our trip. We experienced 4 tours with 3 different companies, and our tour with Jose was far and away the most enjoyable. I hesitate to even call it a tour, it really felt like more like a day with family. Not only is Jose incredibly knowledgeable, but he goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable and asks all the right questions to tailor the experience to your interests. Above all, he’s just an incredibly kind-hearted human and you know you’re in good hands with him, after spending the day with him, he feels like family and we will absolutely be reuniting with him on future trips to Portugal and Spain!Written December 29, 2024
- ELEANORP1500 contributionsAmazing day with JoseWe had an amazing time on our tour with Jose. We saw all the sites we were interested in and Jose was very knowledgeable about each one. He was incredibly accommodating and kind. Truly an unforgettable day and I can’t imagine doing it with anyone else. We will be back!!Written December 29, 2024
- bobtO6221ND0 contributionsTerrific tour of Sintra. The trip to the three monuments was amazing! José was an excellent guide, and we would highly recommend him. He picked us up at our hotel in Lisbon and drove us to Sintra. We started at the Moorish Castle, then the Pena Palace, and finally the Regaleira Palace. While others could easily do those (and more) in one day, my wife and I don't move that fast (we're over 70). Perhaps a range of times for each monument would be helpful. I don't think we spent an inordinate amount of time, but we did end up skipping lunch. That said, I would rather visit these incredible monuments than eat a quick lunch! And while it is more expensive than a group tour, a private tour was well worth it.Written December 20, 2024
- amiek5970 contributionsSpecial Day in SintraWe had an amazing day in Sintra with the best guide/person. Jose was great to spend the day with and taught us so much about the history. Look no further. This tour is unbeatable.Written December 20, 2024
- Erin M0 contributionsJose's Wine Tour!Jose was incredible! We had an absolutely wonderful time with Jose! He is so knowledgeable and has so much information to share about the history of Portugal, the Portuguese territories and his own background. He's met some incredible people and clearly is in this industry because he loves sharing knowledge and experiences with people from all over. We have told everyone that is thinking about going to Portugal that they need to book with Jose! He also took time to know us and was able to customize on the fly to make a memorable experience for my husband to meet some other wine industry folks since he works in the industry. It was such a memorable experience and highly recommend Jose!Written December 19, 2024

- berthamaeo0 contributionsExcellent private tour experience with Lisbon on WheelsWe enjoyed our private tour to Sintra, Cabo de Roca and Cascais. José, our tour guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. We did not feel rushed at all. - 953lairdw0 contributionsDay trip from Lisbon to Pena Palace, town of Sintra, Cape Roca and Cascais. Jose was Awesome! Highly recommend!Trip was fantastic! Started off with a coffee and custard tart stop. On the way to Pena, we learned a lot about Portugal history and the background during the tour of Pena greatly enhanced the tour. Stop in the town of Sintra for some shopping etc., then lunch at a truly local restaurant. Best food and wine on the trip, more like a dinner and very well priced, wine, meal, dessert top notch, honestly unbelievable. Went to Cape Roca, western most point of Continental Europe, then to Hell’s mouth (Boca do Inferno) and Cascais for some shopping etc. Jose was fantastic, great conversation, history, courteous, 10/10. Don’t go on your own, take the day trip with Jose!!Written November 11, 2024
- AmyK2930 contributionsThe best Sintra mother/daughter trip!Jose was the most incredible tour guide. We couldn’t ask for a better experience, he took us to beautiful sites that I think we would’ve missed with anyone else! He made our mother/ daughter trip so much fun, his quick wit and sense of humor had us laughing the whole time. And we appreciated the impromptu adventure!Written November 7, 2024

Had an incredible day with Jose doing a custom tour of Cabo de Roca, Pena Palace, lunch at a delicious seafood spot on the beach, and other fun stops. Jose offered a wealth of knowledge about Portuguese history and culture, with local recommendations. He was responsive to our specific requests about how we spent our time. He is full of personality and a lot of fun to be with. We felt like we were being shown around town with a friend. Highly recommend!

I recently visited lisbon with my family and young children
I booked this excursion with Jose as my guide and I cannot say enough wonderful things about him and the tour overall
Firstly, I booked for and really wanted to see the monuments in Sintra but was so sad to learn that they were to remain closed for much of the later part of July due to the heat.
When Jose came to collect us from our hotel, we had just learned of the closures and he could read my disppointment but he convinced me that there was much else to see, And was he right!
There is so much to do and see in Sintra that one would need to go back and perhaps overnight there to really capture it all
Jose’s alternate choices were exceptional
And he was so patient with my 7 and 9 year old too throughout the day
We started at that national palace and I let him plan our day after the visit to the palace. After exploring The town for an hour,
he took us to a fantastic local restautant outside the touristy zone with fish cooked on wood coal and I learned how the Portuguese eat
I consider myself to be a very well rounded cook but he actually taught me how to dress a salad correctly and thanks to him my kids now are regular salad eaters!
The wine tasting was fabulous and trip to cascais thereafter with small stops along the away was also magical
We did a lot of sightseeing in portugal during our trip but this one day really remains with me. Jose had a large part to do with that.
He taught me how things were done the local way and that’s always important to me
He took such great care of my children and I hope to be able to take a tour with him when we return there in the near future!

José was a very knowledgable guide with a quick wit! Drove us to a few other nice spots that was not on the list and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Also gave us some history information about the tour of the National Palace of Pena ( but we had to pay extra to get into the palace)

José drove us on a private tour around the most beautiful beaches in the area. We especially appreciated his personal and individual way of giving the tour. As we didn’t want to go inside any castles, we had the opportunity to see a lot of very special and scenic spots on the coast. It was a perfect tour on my birthday. José is very friendly, open minded, funny and knows a lot about all the places he took us to. I strongly recommend this tour. Die Tour war einfach perfekt. :)

We enjoyed our tour so much with Jose that we booked a follow up tour with him. We could have spent a week at Pena palace but Jose kept us moving and exposed us to amazing experiences all around the Sintra province. He took us to an amazing natural land bridge, several national treasures, and took the time to explain everything in detail. Whenever we wanted to deviate, he was always able to point out things we would have missed.
It's worth a trip rain or shine.

My wife and another couple (our friends) booked a private tour to Sintra, with wine tasting in January. Jose picked us up at our hotel on time (at 9:30). Jose was very friendly and entertaining. He also gave us a lot of information about lisbon and the various sights along our trip. Jose also recommended a great place for dinner while we were in Lisbon. We went and it was a great recommendation.
We were all pretty flexible with what we wanted to see and Jose offered excellent suggestions. The weather was foggy and had light rain, so he suggested the Quinta de Regaleira (separate review, but amazing). Jose accompanied us and basically gave us a very knowledgeable tour. Given the weather, he suggested not to do the Moorish Castle or Pena Palace, which was fine by us. We had plenty of time for a nice lunch in Sintra, Monserrate, wine tasting in Colares, Cabo da Roca, and a brief stop in Cascais. Jose was flexible and planned our stops to get the most out of our day. Without him, we would not have seen as much.
The van was comfortable and the tour came with bottles of water as well. Note that admission to the sights are not covered. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone traveling to Lisbon and wants to do an excursion.

We did a private day tour to Sintra and Cascais with Jose. He was wonderful, punctual, knowledgeable and friendly. He knew the best places to take us and had a great sense of how much time we would need in each place. He was flexible, but also very informative. We loved the tour and would highly recommend this to other travelers. Great way to see the beautiful sights outside of Lisbon and also very affordable! Thank you, Jose!!

Paid 180 euros for this private tour. Got up early and waited at the hotel but nobody showed up. So called the tour operator and they didn;t even recognize the booking. Although I got two emails with confirmations and even a reminder the day before for this trip from tripadvisor. They couldn't do anything for us. Then 5 hours later I get an email from the operator that they apologized and said we could reschedule this? That was not an option as we were leaving the day after but 5 hours later to let us know that there was an issue?? One of the worst experience with Tripadvisor. So I will never book a trip with tripadvisor. Just book it directly with a tour operator. So not a terrible trip to Sintra, ahum no trip at all!!

Can this tour be custom? And does it include skip the line tickets (for admission) to the Moorish castle and Pena Palace?
Written August 3, 2018
Jose did customize the tour based on what we wanted to see. We actually did two tours with him and he went off script for both.
With regards to skipping lines, we purchased our tickets at a different site that was linked to Pena so we didn’t have to wait in line. Jose helped us do that as well.
