Meet your guide and group in central Lisbon. Listen to a short introduction to get oriented, and hear about the history of the square, built with native Portuguese stones. Take in the sights, sounds, as you follow your guide through Restauradores Square and take a peek at Liberdade Avenue to see an important obelisk and plenty of examples of Portuguese art deco architecture. Check out Rossio Central Station and learn the details of the 19th-century engineering marvel that is the tunnel to Sintra. Next up are Carmo Square and the elegant Chiado neighborhood, full of local boutiques, restaurants, and bookstores. Admire the rebuilt Baixa Pombalina, the area that suffered the effect of the 18th century earthquake the most. From here, we slowly walk towards Alfama, the oldest nieighborhood of Lisbon, where time seems to stand still. As you explore, learn about the tradition of fado music, stopping to peek into fado restaurants and performance spaces you would ordinarily walk right by. The tour’s last stop is the grand Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio). After your guide’s final history lesson, get insider suggestions on where to explore further and say goodbye to your group.

Best tour guide EVER and a must do your first day in Lisbon!
My two adult daughters and I took the tour with Joana, and they both said it was their favorite experience in Lisbon. I have to agree- Joana made it an amazing experience. She was so relaxed, personable, and friendly, while also being incredibly knowledgeable. We learned a ton about Lisbon, but the information was given with humor and through stories, so it felt very different from other guided tours. When she talked about the dictatorship or the revolution or the religious attitudes in the country, she talked about the experiences of her own friends and family, and she made the culture come alive. She was very cognizant of the different physical abilities in the group, but never made anyone feel singled out. She also went above and beyond in accommodating our dietary restrictions (vegetarian). Even though we were a mix of ages, abilities, countries, and genders, everyone felt like friends by the end. We also took her suggestions to heart for the (unfortunately limited) time we had left. I HIGHLY recommend you take the tour your first day in Lisbon, because it’s such a great way to see and become familiar with the city. Just fyi for anyone wondering, the tour is very doable in term of walking and she provides alternatives by showing you public escalators, elevators, and secret shortcuts. Thank you, Joana, for being the highlight of our trip!

Great bearings of the city
I highly recommend this tour and company. We started this tour right after we arrived in Lisbon, and it helped us get oriented to the city and its history. There were less people in the tour than originally booked for, and they even adjusted the tour price even though they don’t have to. Sophia, our guide, is born and raised in the city and graciously walked with us to show us the central part, Alfama district, and up to central square. We even got treated to Ginjinha liqueur (as we had too many pasties de Nata by then) and codfish cake at the company’s expense. What a nice treat it was!

highly recommend on first day in Lisbon

We enjoyed this excellent walking tour on our first morning in Lisbon. Joana our tour guide was fabulous; born and raised in Lisbon, she helped us to understand the layout of the city so we could orient ourselves, she showed us the ways to navigate the hills with the use of free elevators, and explained the history and stories of the different parts of the city. I would highly recommend for anyone on their first day - we felt much more confident in finding our way around. She also gave us a mini map written by their tour guides that makes it way easier to orient ourselves.
The egg tart and cod cake were highlights too - great to have those snacks to give us fuel for the tour!

Fantastic tour to get a deep dive of Lisbon!

Ana was a fantastic guide. She expertly navigated the group through various historical sites with seemingly the least amount of stairs in Lisbon. We learned a lot on this walking tour. We were so engrossed that we didn't even notice that 3+ hours had passed when the tour ended. I highly recommend anyone visiting to take this tour and get a great overview of the city and its important landmarks.

Great introduction to Lisbon with a fantastic guide!

We booked this tour as a start point for a short stay in Lisbon and it was really fantastic and great value. The tour itself was very interesting and made it easy to orientate yourself in the city and to pick out places you wanted to go back to see again or explore further on your own. I would say it was quite a gentle pace, but Lisbon is full of very steep cobbled streets so I guess it could be challenging if you're not used to walking up hills! Our guide, Joanna, made it a highlight of our trip. She was so entertaining, knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the city and her country - I felt like I learnt so much but it was never boring! She made everyone feel welcome and created a lovely atmosphere in the group.

Wonderful way to discover Lisboa

Our tour guide was punctual, knowledgeable, and kind. The tour exceeded our expectations. It is worth way beyond its price point. My friend and I kept stopping for pictures, and the tour guide was super patient with us. My friend was wearing heels and there was an elderly man in the group; she never left anyone behind and constantly checked in on us. The food was tasty— we only had one day in Lisbon, and we felt we got to see a lot of the city and learn about its history as well because of this tour.

Joana the tour guide was a wealth of information and she injected humour and personality to the facts so we weren’t overwhelmed. At one point I had lost sight of the group and she was on the phone to the office so they could contact me by phone. I would have hated to miss any of the tour. The locations she took us to were interesting and she made everything feel so familiar, I felt less like a tourist and more like a traveller.

Outstanding Tour Guide

Our guide was Joana, and she was phenomenal. What was scheduled to be a three hour walking tour lasted four hours with stories, sights and revelations about Lisbon’s past and present that left our heads spinning. We have taken many walking tours, but Joana is not your typical guide. She zeroed in on each group member’s interests and fascinations and showed us the nooks and crannies of Lisbon that we would never have discovered without her. We highly recommend you ask for Joana when booking an Inside Lisbon tour. She’s outstanding.

Great introduction to Lisboa
Joana was our tour guide for our Best of Lisbon walking tour. Joana was passionate about Lisboa and presented the history and local information in a logical and easy to understand manner. She displayed empathy with her tour group walking at an appropriate pace with regular stops. Joana encouraged questions and answered with confidence. We walked away having learnt much of the local history and well informed on what to do next in Lisbon. Thank you for a great introduction to your city and what it has to offer. The tart, cod fish and green wine tasting was also a pleasant surprise.

The best way to spend your first day in Lisbon!

This tour was the perfect way to spend our first full day in Lisbon. Our guide, Joana, was the best tour guide during our entire European trip. She was the perfect combination of being knowledgeable, personable, and easy to listen to. Her passion for her city and culture is contagious. She gave us a condensed summary of Portugal's history using skill and humor. She was very engaging and shared information in such an engaging way. She took great care to orient us to the city, so that after the tour we would be able to easily navigate the city ourselves. We got to see the highlights of several areas of the city, and sample two of the most famous Portuguese foods: custard tarts and codfish fritters. We would highly recommend this tour, and any tour led by Joana!
