Walking in Coimbra among the celebrating students and their guests
We were supposed to meet Sara Cruz on top of the hill in Coimbra, going down. However, the annual parade of the university happened to take place the same days, which was an exciting site in and of itself, but the road were blocked, so we could not get there by taxi. Instead, Sara came down to our hotel and we took the walking tour going up. It made it a bit more difficult, but Sara made it all worthwhile. With her vast knowledge and home-grown perspectives, her familiarity with the students' lives and culture, her lovely demeanor and sense of humor, she painted the place for in bright virtual colors, making it a very special experience. Thank you, Sara!

Visiting Conimbriga Roman Ruins and Museum
History lovers that we are, we were not going to visit Portugal without seeing the Roman ruins in Conimbriga. Fortunately we had Eva J as out guide: her wealth of knowledge, flawless command of English, love of what she is doing, great attitude and pleasant demeanor helped bring this dead place alive for us. We could imagine ourselves living in the structures she described and explained to us so well. Thank you, Eva!

Nice visit if you are in the area
Worth the visit if you are in the area. The entry fee was 8 euros and it includes the ruins and the museum. It was a very interesting visit.

      Very nice ruins, good mosaics
The ruins have been partially excavated and what there is to see is interesting but not very well preserved, the mosaics are nice and the garden of the house with the fountains is really nice, the fountains still work if you put in a 50 cent coin in the meter. What I didn’t care for was the paving they have done over the ruins and in the gymnasium area, it really ruins the whole effect. The museum is very small, you can see it in about 20 minutes, but it is worth it as you are already there and there is no extra charge. Getting there by public transportation is not easy as they only have a few buses a day. You can hire a taxi but I never checked on the price. We took a semi private tour out of Coimbra for 60 euros per person that included a visit to another interactive museum and the aqueduct nearby. The entire tour took about four hours from start to finish.

      Roman ruins in Portugal
So interesting to view what life was like in this town based on the ruins. And there are digs currently happening so you get to watch archaeological work in real time. Not much shade but the museum and snack bar are indoors. Worth the visit!

      Worth the trip
Amazing and definitely worth the trip! These ruins are in perfect condition. The mosaics are shockingly in great shape. The museum is interesting it’s really a shame that’s not better publicized because it’s worth a detour or a direct trip.

      Exceptional tours outside of Coimbra!
We made our return visit to Portugal and Coimbra in September and booked two tours with Sara - World Heritage of Central Portugal and Castles & Town Walls. Sara is an exceptional tour guide and picked us up promptly each day at our hotel. Highlights included visiting the World Heritage sites in Tomar, Batalha and Alcobaça. It’s hard to pick a favorite but the Mosteiro da Batalha (Monastery of Batalha) is extra impressive as you approach it in the middle of town and so is the aqueduct outside of Tomar. And approaching the castle of Montemor-o-Velho first thing in the morning was also extra impressive. We had some additional time along the way for lunch and local pastries - our favorite was the Pastéis de Tentugal. Having Sara provide historical and regional information along the way gives so much more context to what we were seeing than trying to go to all the sites on our own and you can tell that she loves sharing her expertise with others. Be sure to book early with Sara and get the most out of your time in and around Coimbra!

Nice to visit if you’re driving by it
if you’ve never been to the ruins of a Roman city, Conimbriga might be something really interesting. If you’ve seen places like Ostia outside of Rome, Itálica outside of Sevilla, or Villa Romana Casale in Sicily, then this site is nothing special. There are sites like it all over the Iberian peninsula. There are some really nice artifacts in the museum. I found the museum more interesting than walking the grounds. It does offer a reduced price for those over 65. We spent less than an hour at the site.

      A must see
Fascinating! A must stop on your way to Coimbra. We thought this was such an interesting site - the history is remarkable. I would have loved more information provided on what we were seeing, but it is all very accessible, interesting, and a great way to spend a couple hours.

      Uncovering Jewish history in Coimbra
Sara is an outstanding guide who provides a fantastic tour. She is extremely knowledgeable and can answer questions with examples from the latest historic research. Before the tour, we had walked around and thought we had seen a lot. Walking with Sara, we realized we had missed so much of Jewish and local history which she expertly tied together. Sara is additionally very personable which made our tour not just fascinating but also very enjoyable. We were grateful, too, that she tailored our tour to some mobility issues- not an easy task in such a hilly city-something which makes Sara's tours unique.

Fun detour to visit Roman ruins.
Much larger the expected and very interesting pitstop. Well worth the detour if you're in the area.

      Lost potential
It was a surprisingly large site and it is a beautiful area. However, there’s so much unused potential but everything seemed a little loveless. They way some pieces were restored wasn’t nicely. And the visitor experience in general wasn’t that great, for a lot of places you need a lot of fantasy to imagine how it might have looked. Especially, people who’ve never visited roman ruins might need a little help with additional signs showing how houses, streets, etc looked. However, the mosaics were quite nice.

Well worth visiting - fantastic preserved runis.
This is a relatively hidden gem. Stunning Roman mosaic floors in a pastoral setting. The ruins still have intact walls, drainage channels and other features. The museum contains interesting artifacts and is very informative. A great place with a reasonable entrance fee.

      Fair
We went with our tour group as an additional tour. The ruins are fairly will preserved. They say they have only uncovered approximately 10% of the Roman village. We have seen better ruins around the world.

This was a very good tour with a knowledgeable guide. She was also considerate of one who had accessibility difficulty. That individual was able to access the library from the main level and not required to take the stairs. But the rest of the tour really would be hard for those with severe mobility issues. They can just choose the library like this guest.

This is my second tour. Last year was with another group. Also informative but in a different way. I enjoyed this tour more.

We had a great time on this tour with Sara. We got to see the key sights around the university and learn about it's history and some of the traditions. We'd highly recommend it!
I also went with Sara to the Roman ruins at Conimbriga which was another worthwhile experience. It's amazing to see what has been preserved both within the ruins as well as the museum.

This worked out perfectly... My friends and I were just driving through Coimbra on our way to Tomar... We saw this two-hour tour option and thought it'd be perfect. Turned out it was! Our guide spoke both English and Spanish to the tour group. She was wonderful. Very knowledgeable. We got a nice history of the university and tour of the former palace grounds. This included the very famous library... While this tour can be booked at the last minute, I'd advise scheduling a few hours before your arrival.

So glad I did this tour even though it was incredibly hot. Got to experience the university and library with a student there, so fun and knowledgeable, I think her name was Eva (accents, language- maybe Ava?) A tour is definitely the way to go to learn as much as you can in a short time.

Our guide Eva was a lovely young lady whose English was excellent. She was friendly and very knowledgeable. As well as seeing the obvious things, she also took us to see areas that were less well known but very interesting.
    Highly recommended.

We had less than a full day to visit Coimbra, and we wanted to make the most of it. We booked a three-hour walk through GoWalksPortugal, and we are very glad we did. As has been noted in other reviews Fabiana is a wonderful guide; beyond being personable and knowledgeable, she showed us sights that we would either not have come across or wouldn’t know their significance if we did. We asked her to take us up the hill to the university on a route that was less direct and not as strenuous, and she did so. She also knew where we could find a clean, public WC -- not always easy for an unfamiliar visitor. The highlight of the tour, of course, was the university's library, where Fabaiana already had timed tickets ready.

Beyond the tour itself, I must commend GoWalksPortugal for its customer service. We were forced to make some last-minute changes to our itinerary, and they were very prompt and gracious in rearranging our planned tour. This was in early March and might be more problematic in busier tourism seasons, but I believe it speaks to the manner in which this service is run. Highly recommended.
