Great experience but misleading about museum fares
The tour was amazing and the guide was very knowledgeable! I would have given it a five but some things were misleading. The description didn’t say that the museum fares were excluded, which made us think they were included. Also we didn’t receive a souvenir photo unless the description meant the guide taking our photo using our own phones. It was unclear. Lastly it was a small thing but I feel like the guide could have paid the 50 cents for the fountains at the House of the Fountains.

        Tour of Roman Ruins
This tour was amazing!!! Don’t miss out on this trip. A visit to Coimbra is not complete without a visit to the Roman ruins!! Our guide was Alfredo and he was extremely knowledgeable of the area and history, very friendly, was able to answer all of our questions and gave us just the right amount of time at each of the stops. Thanks for the great tour. Martha and Bill

Amazingly well preserved ancient ruins. Great guide. Worth every penny.
Alfredo was a wonderful guide - very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the history of the Romans in what is now Portugal. Despite foul weather, we had an unforgettable experience and learned a great deal. Conimbriga knocked our socks off!

Must visit for Roman history buffs.
Alfredo and his tour was outstanding! The tour was conducted in the rain and there wasn’t a place we missed. He knows his history and was proud to share the Roman history of Portugal. Alfredo is personable, funny, knowledgeable and informative. Coimbriga is outstanding. We have visited several other Roman sites in Italy, Spain and Portugal and found this one exceptional. It’s a small group (max of 4) in a 4x4 vehicle. Very fun, quick drive between the sites that includes interactive museums that Alfredo walks you through and explains history. We highly recommend this tour for those of you who have great interest in “the Empire.”

        Enjoying forest views and nature
Had a lovely experience in Lousa mount looking for wildlife. Lucky enough to spotted a wild boar with young, a red deer, doe, fawn and bucks. Visited a schist village.

So great to have a knowledgeable guide—fabulous tour of an ancient site.
Alfredo was very knowledgeable and fun to spend the day with. We (small group of 3 people) also had time to explore on our own somewhat. Great trip. Highly recommend.

A comprehensive understanding of Roman occupation in the area was gained from this experience. The time spent at each part of this tour was well paced.

        Mysterious morning.
Our tour started early. We saw a lot of deers. Alfredo drove us all over Mount Lousa to look for the deer. It was fogy morning so animals looked mysterious between the trees. Very pleasant morning and very much recommended trip.

Brilliant tour with a brilliant guide!
The Roman ruins at Conimbriga - the most impressive in Portugal - are an essential visit if you are in the Coimbra area. And you will get so much more out of a visit if you go with Veado Verde guide Alfredo Mateus, who is a hugely knowledgeable and charming companion for the half-day tour. The trip includes visits to the springs and aquaduct that supplied the Roman city of Conimbriga, a brilliant new interactive museum on Roman life, and finally the stunning archeological site itself. The surviving mosaics are superb and in themselves make the trip worthwhile, but there is so much more to see at this truly impressive historical site. And Alfredo brings it all to life with great insight and good humour too. Not to be missed!

Amazing Tour for All Interest Levels in Ancient Rome
This half day tour of the Roman influence in the area did not disappoint. Alfredo was a wonderfully insightful and engaging tour guide who expertly drove us to several sites/museums while chatting away about the history and wildlife of the region (in English). It's not easy to get to Conimbriga (even from Coimbra) without renting a car, and this is by far a better option. The Conimbriga site is amazingly preserved, but it is the final stop on the tour as a way to build up for an unforgettable visit (particularly for those who haven't read much about Rome). Whether a Roman history buff like myself or somebody who knows virtually nothing about antiquity, you will NOT be disappointed.

        Lovely tour in great nature
Alfonso did a great job showing me this wonderful place of nature. With his Jeep we could go off road on the hiking trails. We also walked a little. Although it was quite hot we saw some deers: Alfonso knows the spots. I had a great time.

A wonderful morning hiking near Coimbra
We had a brilliant morning hiking and viewing the Roman ruins at Conimbriga with Alfredo. We were picked up at our Airbnb in Coimbra, and driven around 20 mins to the start of the hike site. It was a beautiful morning and after a few days in Lisbon it was lovely to get outside for some fresh air. The hike is not too challenging but I'd still recommend decent footwear as some sections were a little slippery. The Roman ruins exceeded all expectations and were incredibly impressive. Alfredo gave us the history as we walked around and answered our questions as we went. Highly recommended.

We throughly enjoyed this tour to the Schist villages. Alfredo was the perfect guide, providing knowledge when needed, flexibility and offering us time to explore alone. We also got to stop at some view points on the road for photos and drove through the forests and were privileged to see a deer. We were able to see and enjoy more than we expected and highly recommend this tour. Thank you Alfredo.

Alfredo is a very passionate and knowledgeable guide. We had a pleasant afternoon into the Lousã Mountains. He showed me the beauties of Schist Villages and also drove to the foot of wind turbines. He knows the plants, animals, and history of the area by heart and doesn't hesitate to share his love of the region to the guest. The tour is very affordable and comfortable. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys local history and nature environment.

Highly recommend! Fascinating place with such an interesting history. What’s more is that the guide, Alfredo holds a wealth of knowledge about the area because he’s spent years visiting and exploring these mountains. He’s also easy going, friendly and a safe and responsible driver. I feel lucky to have had this experience.

Alfredo from Green Deer Tours took us around yesterday. We had a wonderful time! Alfredo explained about the history of the villages and how they have been rebuilt and used today.

He picked us up from Coimbra for a full eight hours and drove all over the mountains during the day's tour. We learnt about each village, saw houses being rebuilt, looked for deer, took pictures on a swing, and ate a delicious lunch.(try the goat stew)

Alfredo was a safe driver and conversation flowed easily in English. We enjoyed learning more about Portugal. We highly recommend him for this tour.

We are very glad we decided to do a tour of the Schist villages during our stay in Coimbra. Our guide, Alfredo, shared his knowledge and love of the mountains with us as we visited these unique villages made from shale. A pleasant change to get away from the city and experience nature.
I also enjoyed tasting the wine made from the Medronho fruit - delicioso! The tour was a great experience and one I would highly recommend.

My wife and I took this tour back in March 2020, just a week before we had to leave Portugal in the oncoming pandemic. But this was the PERFECT tour for avoiding crowds! Alfredo has an all-terrain vehicle and knows the region exceptionally well. We drove around most of the day, stopping at very rural mountain sites. The views were magnificent. Even if there were no pandemic, this would still be one of the best day trips in Portugal. Mountains, nature, village walks, a chance to spot deer. This was a highlight of our three-week trip.

Had an amazing time, Alfredo is kind and the pick-up process and communications is perfect. We visited 3 villages with a stop for coffee, pastries, and a glass of aguardiente (strawberry brandy) and was back to coimbra center by noon. Highly recommend the trip! There is some uphill/downhill climbing.
