The tour was wonderful! I really enjoyed being able to learn and experience the island from horseback! The horses are beautiful and well looked after. They are also well trained and did a great job on the tour. Monica is awesome! She is very knowledgeable about horses and would provide helpful instruction to better communicate with your horse when needed. No matter your skill with riding I would recommend this tour if you are visiting Terceira Island!

the tour was great. The horses with beginner riders on their backs relaxed even with traffic on the streets. The idea of ​​the walkie-talkie to get information about Terceira is simply brilliant. The entire experience was amazing! My wife and I did the long tour which was the perfect amount of time. The horses (Caramel and Flash) were perfect for us and were patient with our inexperience. Our favorite parts were going through the forest in between the trees high up in the hill and listening to all the history and facts about the island. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone.

We had a fantastic time on our horseback riding adventure! My fiancé and I enjoyed a memorable 3-hour tour, which, although it might seem lengthy, was the perfect amount of time to really dive into learning about horseback riding. Our host was exceptional—knowledgeable, friendly, and an overall calm teacher which made the experience even more enjoyable. As we rode, we not only gained riding skills but also learned fascinating details about the local wildlife. We were also provided water in the middle and after the journey, which was a nice touch. Great experience from start to finish!

It was an amazing experience. Everyone at Basalto Club de Campo were amazing. The horses were magnificent and we got an excellent three our ride. As well, we got a tour by Monica of everything we were seeing and curiosities of the island with was the cherry on top. Lastly, big thanks to Monica as she drove me with her car to the nearest city. Best experience in Terceira, Highly recommend!

Basalto is a very special place. My daughter and I were so happy to have found it - our visits there were some of our best experiences on Terceira. Monica is so kind and knowledgable, and takes excellent care of her beautiful horses. We booked a 3 hour horse trek and the scenery was stunning. Then my daughter had 3 riding lessons with Monica and enjoyed them so much she wishes she could continue regularly! We were very appreciative that Monica is able to teach so well in English. She is a patient, kind, knowledgable and creative teacher. It was so obvious to us how much she loves horses, as well as her farm and Terceira. We look forward to returning to Basalto again in the future. Obrigada, Monica!

The horse ride was our best activity in the Azores. Monica is an amazing host and she provides great information about Terceira. The scenery is stunning and the horses are happy making it a magical ride. If you can only do one activity on Terceira, this is the one. Highly recommended!

Even if Terceira Island in the Azores were not a paradise in its own right, it would be worth a visit if for no other reason than to ride with Monica at Basalto Horse Experience. The scenery is stunning, there's a wide variety of well trained and well cared for horses, and Monica takes the time to become well enough acquainted with her guests to match each one with the ideal equine companion. My wife and I have been twice, having retuned a second time (from Rhode Island) because the first experience was so magnificent. Multiple trails to varying destinations can be customized based on the experience, skills, and interests of each rider. All one needs is a desire to ride and explore the environs of Basalto, which is a short and inexpensive taxi ride from Angra do Heroismo. Monica can literally get anyone, even individuals with disabilities, on horseback and out on one of the verdant trails. If you are on Terceira, don't miss this opportunity. It is a truly unique experience that is not to be missed.

The forest and gardens had a mystical feel. Beyond stunning. Three of the four of us had not ridden since we were children. The horses were lovely and quiet. It was a divine walk. We met Monica, Francisco and Flavio with the horses at the garden. They are very aware of the gift they offer to island’s visitors. It is clearly a labor of love. The horses walked gently and quietly along forest paths and beautiful fields peppered with old volcanic hills. Ancient stone walls and fields dotted with cows provided a window into the island’s past that is too beautiful to be believed. We even stopped at a small dairy for a taste of fresh milk. There is a small local cheese maker 5 minutes away. I believe the name is Quejo Vacquina. I recommend stopping for a cheese sampler and glass of wine after your ride.

Thoroughly enjoyed my ride with Monica from Basalto Stables. Monica was great at explaining where we were going, what I was about to see and the things along the way. The views were absolutely picturesque. We rode up the mountain, and through the beautiful forest seeing a lovely park/picnic area, gardens, plenty of fields, cattle as well as bulls that they run in the streets during festival time. I rode on Lector who was such a good boy and knew the paths he was to take. The ride was very easy as I had not ridden in many, many years; therefore, Monica took it slow. She will up the ride for the experienced ones. Monica takes quite a few pictures of you for your keepsake. The day was beautiful and the ride was awesome. The stable is a short taxi ride, approximately 15 minutes, from the town of Terceira. The taxi was easy to get from the hotel, and of course being collected after the ride.

We did this extraordinary experience in Terceira during our honey moon in the Azores! We had a ride horse around Sao Bartolomeo and we really enjoyed it (2 hours and 30 minutes was the duration more or less). We met Monica, the owner of the ranch, who guided us during the ride: she was very kind and she explained us all about the nature and the landscapes around. We felt really comfortable and happy even if we are not advanced horse riders. We hope to repeat the experience as soon as possible! Chiara & Lorenzo

When I was planning my Terceira trip (my first holiday solo - and not working while traveling - in over 25 years), I knew I wanted to experience some island riding - and I'm so happy I chose Basalto. I rode a bit as a kid and took lessons in my early 20s, but hadn't had much experience since. From our first email conversation, Monica made me feel a) confident I'd made the right choice so far as the longer tour; and b) confident that my skill level would be just fine. I arrived past the time I said I would (by probably 15 or 20 minutes) because I missed the turn-off and kept driving... ;) Monica was so incredibly gracious. As for the ride, it was exactly what I was hoping for - the weather was perfect, my assigned horse, a beautiful, confident and sensitive Lusitano named Lector, was solid and steady, and the scenery... simply stunning. During the ride, Monica pointed out some of the native flora and fauna, the 'wild' bulls, and recounted stories of the horses, facts about farming in the area, and all sorts of island lore that made the time so much more than just a lovely ride through gorgeous countryside. And then as an unexpected bonus, she sent photos and videos of the ride for all of us later in the evening. It was a magical afternoon I'll always hold dear. If you love horses and are looking for a unique way to experience Terceira, this tour is highly recommended...

Woah! Everything about the Basalto Horse Experieince is spectacular! Monica, who owns the ranch and runs the tours, is beyond wonderful, understanding, and has a wealth of knowledge to share during the ride! My friends and I loved the horses, the incredible views, as well as learning about the island’s agriculture, history, and traditions. Thank you!! We will definitely be doing this again on our next trip to The Azores!!
