Search for whales and dolphins along the southern coast of the Azores on a 2- to 3-hour wildlife watching trip from Ponta Delgada. Traveling in a nimble, open boat with an experienced captain, you’ll have the best chance of spotting the bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales, sei whales, bearded whales, and blue whales that flock to the islands. This 2- to 3-hour whale and dolphin tour is a fun, family-friendly way to see the coast, and both morning and afternoon departures are available.
What to Expect
Make your way to a tour office in Ponta Delgada, where you’ll meet your wildlife guide for a short briefing about your itinerary—the exact route varies with recent dolphin and whale activity, taking advantage of a series of observation points along the southern coast.

Board an open boat for a trip along the coast, which will last between 2 and 3 hours depending on the location of the wildlife.

Keep your camera ready, because there’s a lot to see, with more than 20 different cetaceans appearing in the waters off the Azores. Scan the water for spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, and try to see the distinctive features of the whales that travel through the archipelago on their yearly migration routes.

With an experienced guide on board, you’ll learn about the animals you see, and get a fun perspective on the Azores’ distinctive nature. After 2 to 3 hours on the water, this tour concludes with drop-off in Ponta Delgada.

Whales and dolphins!

Did a half day tour booked through my hotel. Was an amazing sunny day and the water was calm. Saw 3 different sperm whales and a couple pods of dolphins. The views and the guides were great.

Lots of Sightings but a Brutal Boat Ride!

We booked a last minute 3 hour whale watching tour with Picos de Aventura early September. After a short instructional presentation, we donned over-sized life vests, grabbed raincoats, and boarded our boat. We assumed that we would be cruising in their larger double decked power...More

We spent 3 hours together with other 80-100 people on a catamaran. The guides were instructed by radio/chips/other means on where the dolphins were. But they were not the only ones. Several faster Zodiac boats and also catamarans rushed to the same spots. At the...More
