About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- lloydtrish690 contributionsGood discoveryReally interesting selection of foods including local bars and cafes. We sauntered along the streets looking as historic buildings and our guide was charming.Written September 10, 2024
- nkumum0 contributionsGreat Authentic and Unrivaled Food Experience in FaroThis is the best food tour I’ve experienced in nearly 15 years of consistent travelling. Esther our guide was incredible! From the historical background to the choice of authentic Portuguese dishes, and libations, the tour was phenomenal. Her providing context to each dish and drink was fascinating and enhanced the entire experience. I highly recommend this specific tour several times over. Enjoy!!!Written September 1, 2024
- burhou0 contributionsSuper evening of dining, drinking, chatting and learning about the cultureThis was such an interesting and enjoyable evening of dining and chatting and learning about the culture. Joao made the tour fun with his humour and friendly style. It was a great group from various countries, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Guernsey and Sweden. Went to places we would never have found otherwise. Highly recommendedWritten August 22, 2024
- 68carolinew0 contributionsGreat food and lovely guideWe had a lovely walk with Esther - great stops with friendly locals and really good food. Plenty and interesting food, some of which we would not have tried on our own. Good food is generally cheap in Faro, nevertheless these qualities of the tour make up for a somewhat pricy cost. Also, Esther is very knowledgable and shared so many interesting facts and stories. She is a most competent guide, including how she balanced giving us time alone to enjoy the food and each other (we were the only 2 people on this tour) with sharing her easy and interesting company.Written July 30, 2024
- Y2729HOthomasd0 contributionsFun walking food tourThe walking food tour was fun. The restaurants served a variety of Portuguese dishes with wine or beer. We also learned a bit of Faro history. On other food tours we also learned the history behind the food, which would also be interesting.Written May 26, 2024
- kryan424130 contributionsHighlight of our trip in the Algarve region!!We met Ester at the meeting point and it was pure fun from there. She spent some time explaining the history of Faro as we walked to our first stop. I don't want to ruin any of the surprises, but the food and drink at every stop were FABULOUS. I am an avid wine drinker, while my husband doesn't drink any wine. Ester was kind enough to get him beer at each of the stops (He's a Sagres fan now!). He is also a fairly picky eater, but loved almost every food item he was served. Thank you so much for a wonderful evening filled with great food and fellowship!! Do NOT miss this tour!!!Written May 19, 2024
- ulf2net0 contributionsNice but expensiveThe tour and the concept is great. The food and drinks (we had wine) is also nice. Not extraordinary but local, and after all that's the point. Our guide smoked cigarrette(s) during the tour without asking the participants if it was ok (both my wife and myself have a hard time with the smoke), and frankly spoken, that should not happen during a guided tour. It gives a feeling of ignorance, whether it was intentional or not. The tour is quite a bit overpriced. Nice but expensive. These are the reasons for not rating it higher than 3 stars.Written April 26, 2024
- tvo_kid0 contributionsA blast!Phenomenal! Ester was welcoming, funny, and a ball of energy! The food was delicious and plentiful and enough drinks for everyone to get tipsy. My favourite dish was the bacalhaus a bras - a bowl of simple ingredients yet flavourful! I highly recommend this tour for anyone in the area that wants an introduction to Portuguese cuisine/dishesWritten March 17, 2024
- goldblade0 contributionsCulinary tourGreat night with new friends great food and drinks, lots of laughs. Thanks to Esther the evening was seamless. A must for food and drinks fans who want inside knowledge of the history of faro and of the local food and drinks.Written February 14, 2024
- elisabethm1930 contributionsYum, awesome tour!!Excellent experience- we all left this tour feeling very full and having tried such a variety of DELICIOUS Portuguese food. I’d recommend this tour to anyone, especially early in your trip so you can familiarize yourself with the town as well as learn a few things about Portugal’s history. Great tour!Written October 19, 2023

- GreenMapleLeaf0 contributionsGreat food tour! This was a great food tour! Luis was very informative about Portuguese history, culture, and food and made this a great tour. He took us to the market and lovely restaurants -- all were great.Written October 2, 2023
- TheDebsBucketList0 contributionsLovely Lagos! My husband and I really enjoyed our time with Joaio along with the local restaurants. We tried razor clams, Portuguese moonshine, mussels, fish soup with stingray, wine, and dessert with port. All delicious…well maybe not the moonshine—it packs a punch! Also the tour of the municipal market was great! We returned to many of the stops on the tour and bought goodies from the Market Maven, Maria. It was a lovely afternoon!Written September 22, 2023

Jaoa, our guide was fantastic. We started in the market in town and had 4 additional stops, each with food and beer or wine tasting. I would highly recommend for anyone interested in learning more about parts of Lagos and eating and drinking some amazing food and beverages.

This was our first food tour in a different country! We usually just look for reviews and forge aheadchosing a restaurant on our own. This tour allowed us to go to four restaurants and try several dishes at each. My son and daughter-in-love found this tour and we all loved it.
Our guide was Joao. He was fun, knowledgable and accommodating for the variety of ages and interests of our group. The local restaurants were ready for us, the food was great and it was interesting to hear the stories behind the dish.
The wines went well with the food and were a perfect compliment. My husband early on asked if he could change to beer and that was handled with no issue.
I especially loved the husband and wife teams running the tiny restaurants out of tiny kitchens serving up delicious food. #couplegoals

Joao was a great guide! Friendly, funny and knowledgeable. We took the tour on the second day in Lagos and wish we had done it the first day. Joao showed us a number of great family-run eateries where the food was incredible. I don't know if I would have visited any of them without this tour, and that would have been a shame. We were two married couples from the States and Joao made it feel like we were hanging out with a friend in Lagos. I would highly recommend this tour! Well worth the price and all four of us left the tour full.

Having been coming to Lagos for 20 years we wanted to try something different and to discover new food and places to eat. It was a really enjoyable evening and well led by Joao who was amusing and aslo informative. The food varied but was all small portions of things that we had not tried so far. The group was very diverse in age and also origins so it made for a great experience sharing our likes, dislikes and experiences of Portugal and the Algarve in particular.

Joao was a great tour guide, he showed us some tucked away locals spots with local delicacies we probably wouldn’t have tried otherwise. He told us lots of interesting facts and history about Lagos as we went, too. This tour is a fantastic experience to book at the start of your stay in Lagos, to find superb food stops off the beaten track to return to later on!

Joao was a great guide… good fun and knowledgable..
I know the area well, but he gave insights and knowledge that are invaluable on these tours, I’ve done a few in different cities but this was definitely up there in terms of the quality of the guide, the food and the drinks!
We were a small group of just 3 during the day, but I imagine bigger tours and evening tours are also a lot of fun!
Don’t want to spoil the trip by sharing all the food photos, but you will not go home hungry!!

Our classic food tour in Lagos was brilliant! We would particularly like to say that our guide Sofia was absolutely outstanding. Not only was she fun and sociable, her local knowledge was superb and made an already great tour even better. We would highly recommend taking this tour when you visit Lagos. The recommended small local bars and cafes which you would normally walk past were little gold mines, we would recommend the stingray soup in particular! The clams and pork sandwich were also very tasty, thank you Sofia for steering us to these incredible dishes! Overall, highly recommended!

Maria was an excellent tour guide, who took us to places we, as tourists, wouldn’t have visited ourselves. She could explain everything about the food, the traditions, the wines, and some background information about Lagos and the Portuguese. We highly recommend this tour.

Joao was our guide for this tour, starting at Lagos market.
From the start he was entertaining, made everyone feel welcome and was knowledgeable about the food and history of the area. His little jokes throughout kept us all entertained!
The market was really interesting and gave us an opportunity to learn about the local foods and ingredients.
We had a nice selection of food stops, all locally owned and a good variety of foods. We had drinks at each stop also, with nonalcoholic options.

The tour led by Joao was excellent, a great way to learn about Portuguese seafood and cooking techniques. Lots of tastings and information at the Mercado Municipal to start the tour, we meant at the door by the stairs. Lagos area is noted for figs, honey, almonds and fresh fish. Also has wine from various geographical areas.
An interesting group of participants who freely shared food and travel experiences.
Tasted items that I would not have done on my own -- razor clams and octopus. The sweet potatoes in the area are delicious.
Joao has a good sense of humor and consiencely engaged all the tour participants.
Good value and highly recommended.

Written August 22, 2018
Yes, it is. It’s about the food and the wine but I’m sure it’s not a problem if you’re just having food, you could have a soft drink.
