Right at the northwest corner of the canal at Korenlei, this is an easy place to stop for a canal tour. There are many boats leaving regularly and we just walked up without a reservation and were on a boat within 10 minutes. I would suggest checking the schedule and booking ahead during the heavier tourist season, but we just happened to get lucky. As with all the canal tours in the region, you get a chance to learn some history about what you are seeing but equally impressive is just getting to take in the city from a very different perspective from walking around. One of the best parts for me was to see Gravensteen from the unique perspective of the canal. So impressive and imposing.

Loved this canal tour of Ghent. Learned a lot of history and saw the city in quite a different and magical way. Our guide Stefan was very knowledgeable , personable and helpful. I would recommend this tour to all but be advised the steps into the boat are very narrow and slick if it has been raining at all. Thanks again Stefan for saving my daughter when her footing slipped!

The boat trip itself was lovely and the guided tour guide was very good, speaking three languages. Lots to see on the river, including the stunning castle. The only thing that spoilt it, however, was the man who sold us the tickets. He was the rudest person I have had experience of in a long time. He quite upset me and spoiled my day. Go across the bridge and try a different boat company. You might find there are polite people in Ghent.

This is one of the better city boat tours I've been on. Very friendly both at the kiosk selling the tickets and on the boat itself. The commentary was very informative and even the grey day didn't dampen the experience.

Of course the succes of these trips always depends largely on both the weather and your actual guide, but I believe this is a great way to get to know Ghent.

Starting from the city centre, they take you to some very picturesque places such as the Gravensteen Castle and the Rabot. You learn quite a lot about the city's background, hear about tiny details that you otherwise would have missed, get a chance to take wonderful pictures and you can sort of map out the city in your head.

The guides know what they are talking about, and most of them (in fact, all of the ones I have seen) are very friendly. The price for a boat trip is worth it, and tipping the guides afterwards is highly appreciated.

Had two beautiful, picture perfect days during our three in Ghent. As the the De booties Van Ghent ticket kiosk is about 100 meters from the Marriott Hotels door from the Mid Town Grill leading onto wharf side walk, we went there. At 7€ senior rate for an hour tour, it was a pretty good ride for the money. While not as picturesque as Amsterdam overall, it was still quite picturesque. If that sounds like a conflict, just the writers taste. Our captain tried to give the tour in three languages, and possibly all were a bit brief in nature. We had a male deligation of what looked to be Chinese business men on this tour, and one in particular who wanted to stand at every opportunity. We had to tap him on the shoulder several times as a very low bridge made him vulnerable to injury. It required him to sit and duck, and he did not seem to like that without understanding the consequences. Finally towards the end of the cruise, he realized we had saved his head from injury. There was one sign along the route that made it clear that these tours were not popular with the local homeowners for the noise each boat brought with it. BOAT TOURS EQUAL NOISE POLLUTION! One mans pleasure is another’s curse.

A trip on De Bootjes van Gent is an excellent way to experience the center of Ghent. The 40 minute trip costs €6.50 for adults and €3.50 for children. Depending on the group commentary could be available in Dutch, English, German, French or Spanish.

Ghent is very different from Brugge. Whereas Brugge more or less maintained its medieval character, Ghent has been a city in transition through the renaissance, industrial revolution and now into the 21st century. Ghent is alive and people go about their business, without being mainly reliant on the tourist trade. This has its own attraction and in spite of all these changes many of the old medieval buildings have remained intact.

There are several of these boat rides on the bridge. Honestly it was mildly interesting. The boat basically goes back and forth on three water ways.
