- sueaI9008BJ0 contributionsWindmills, clogs and cheese tourSo wonderful to experience the old Holland by travelling a short distance to this small village. We had a lovely tour guide and got to climb into a working windmill, see clogs being made and a cheese making demo with free tasting of their wide choices. Very good value for money. Highly recommendWritten January 17, 2025
- nialh20250 contributionsFabulous half day tour. This is a fabulous tour, which takes about 3.5 hours. Our guide was Callum, who was fantastic, great sense of humour and very informative, and gave a great insight into the history and people of the Zaanse Schans region. Very enjoyable and you get to see demonstrations of pigment, clog, cheese and chocolate making as well as seeing the internal workings of a windmill. There are a number of windmills here but you would need a whole day to see them all. Overall great staff and good value for money.Written January 6, 2025
- GuyKean0 contributionsFascinatingExcellent guide. Helpful driver. Suitable pace for all. Enough time to shop but not too much. No ‘killing time’. Good valueWritten January 6, 2025
- B4966UImelissaj0 contributionsA little rushed, but great place to visit.Great tour guide and bus driver, although the tour felt a little rushed as we did not get to see the whole site. We were told to meet at 10am, but didn't leave until 10.30am as had to wait for customers who had rung in to say they were lost. Not sure if this delay was the reason the tour felt rushed or if this was the normal time for departure.Written December 31, 2024

- Excursion001275658560 contributionsGreat tripHad a great time, A good way to see 3 cute villages that would have been challenging getting to all 3 by ourselves without a car. Went inside a windmill, visited a cheese store, & saw the clog making process.Written December 27, 2024
- Explorer7208890 contributionsEuropean River Cruise with APTWe decided to do another European river cruise (previously completed a cruise with Scenic in 2010) after we spotted a 2 for 1 offer through Flight Centre. The cruise was on the AMS Amastella and given we were cruising in November in Europe we knew it would be cold but this didn't interfere with our overall enjoyment on the experience. We were offered an upgrade from a lower level cabin to a top level cabin at a reduced rate 2 weeks before we were due to embark. The new cabin which was located centrally in the boat, offered a much larger size than the lower one and also a balcony. Due to at times excessive engine noise we would not recommend the rear cabins on this boat. We were extremely comfortable in the cabin and Edward, our steward, took great care of us. The food offered was generally of a high standard although the sweets did not offer a lot of variety. All drinks were included throughout the day which was welcomed by all. The staff seemed to 'warm' towards us as the cruise progressed. The music duo on board were outstanding although there was not offered a variety of performers from local areas as we cruised. We had previously enjoyed this when we travelled with Scenic. There was a variety of daily tours on offer so we were able to enjoy some different destinations than we had previously seen through the Scenic cruise. Unfortunately we experienced a 12 hour breakdown with the boat, so we missed out on visiting Rudesheim in Germany. This cruise was simular to the quality of our previous Scenic cruise. We enjoyed meeting some great lifelong friends, and would recommend cruising with APT.Written December 18, 2024
- Debifrankl0 contributionsWonderful experience for very little cost! And comfy even in cold weather! This excursion was packed with delightful photo ops and history! After a short 25-minute drive to the countryside in their van, the group walked in stages (sometimes only a short distance and sometimes longer but never too far - probably 2 miles total) and experienced how the Dutch make wooden shoes (he made one right in front of us!), cheese (another delightful demonstration) and we saw working windmills. It was beautiful - so many shoes in the shop and SO much cheese! We got to sample the cheese and have hot chocolate with rum (if you wanted it - extra cost but worth it!). It was coldish (51° F) and windy, but I dressed for it (t-shirt, thermal shirt then parka, gloves and a knit cap). I didn't feel cold at all, and I'm always cold! My husband wore a summer shirt and ski coat, and he was cold - you have to dress in multiple layers to be comfortable. I'm wearing hot chili's (silk thermals) under my jeans tomorrow.Written December 16, 2024
- 200gillianc0 contributionsWindmill villageAbsolutely recommend going to see the windmills and clog making. My whole family enjoyed the experience. We decided to catch the train from Amsterdam central which was a fraction of the tour guide price. It’s a short walk from the station to the windmill village where it’s free to see the clog making workshop and enter the windmill shops. We only had to pay for entry into the working windmill.Written December 13, 2024
- TraveinArtist0 contributionsA pleasant afternoon excursionWhile I enjoyed seeing an area outside of Amsterdam that included scenic waterways and historic mills, the cheese factory is not an actual cheese factory where they make cheese, rather it is an educational display in a former small cheese factory with cheese samples and store. There was a demonstration showing how wood clogs are made. I thought our guide was very good, just know that this is a more touristy type tour.Written December 13, 2024
- sharondI5277OL0 contributionsNice trip out of the city.Such a nice trip out of the city. I think you could do most of this on your own, however our guide was very good. We went on a Monday and arrived about 2:30 to the village. Keep in mind this is a VERY windy location and although the weather forecast called for 45 degrees F. It was freezing cold. I had extra clothes and was glad I had every piece of clothing. We sampled chocolate, cheese and had a demo of a wooden shoe making process. This town gets 3million visitors a year and it is small. It must be insane in the summer. Got some nice pics.Written December 9, 2024
- U1614ZNstefanieh0 contributionsRainy and cold but funEven so it was rainy and cold our tour guide made it fun! She alternated inside with outside activities! She was very knowledgeable. Love that little village. Because of the weather there were no crowds!Written December 5, 2024
