    Unexpected tour
Stumbled across this house on our way to rembrandtplein. Decided to go in and enjoyed looking around. Audio is a must. Can’t beat a good tour. Interesting that a previous curator seems to have got rid of a few things 🤔🤔

Lovely private home museum and gardens in the middle of the town.
Lovely small museum that is a private home preserved and also offers rotating museum exhibits within the home and gardens. It's easy to see in less than an hour and interesting to see how the family lived and the detail of the building, the art and the gardens. If you want a smaller experience than the huge museums and like seeing historically preserved homes, this is a must see!

    Nice opulent canal house interior
Only visited because included with the I Amsterdam card. Worth visiting if you have the card. Nicely presented and interesting to see a canal house in terms of decor from the period & just how deep it is front to back. Doesn’t take long to go round, 25 min max.

    Nice mansion
Beautiful mansion that provides a feel of the opulent life led by the original inhabitants. The furniture, stairways, paintings, and sculptures were interesting. the self-guided tour was good.

A nice tour for a bit of historical daily life
We went here because it was part of the iAmsterdam card and were very impressed with the whole house. It was well done and gave a really feel for life at the time. Would definitely recommend it.

    Curator fail
Interesting home but sadly it is quite poorly done. There has been so much damage done by curators over the years, including the current ones, that the home is far from original and has a very odd feel about it. What was particularly off-putting was the frequent criticism in the audio tour of past curators not honoring the home's history (e.g., selling off furnishings or painting over a mural) and then seeing the same again being done with the current curators using valuable museum space to exhibit some bizarre modern art. Even the rooms that have been decorated to period are not particularly interesting, and there are too few of them to begin with. Really quite disappointing.

    Beautiful vintage house
Another big and beautiful vintage canal house. You have beautiful living room on the upper floor as well as big and lovely garden in which you can sit. Perfect for fans of vintage.

    How the other half lived
Beautiful glimpse of 17th century living for the merchant class. Double sized house on the best canal, Herengracht. Easy to view in a lazy hour, steps from Rembrandt Square, the "Skinny Bridge" and a short walk to the Amsterdam Hermitage.

wonderful behind the scenes view of a Dutch townhouse
This house museum gives a wonderful view of Amsterdam in the 19th century, while also showing how the 1800's were fascinated by the Dutch heritage from the Golden Age, too. I especially loved seeing the kitchens of 2 different eras. You may think this is a small museum, but with an excellent audio guide (definitely do it!), there's really a LOT to see and learn about. I imagine this is a less-visit site: we had it mostly to ourselves by going first thing in the morning, and off season. The art collection rooms are very very impressive, too. Highly recommended: it's one of those cool small museums that the City Card makes it easy to drop in on.

    Very interesting insight.
This well-run museum is great for an insight into what the houses are like behind the big front doors and windows. The free commentary is worth having too. Not as much there as perhaps I was expecting, but what was there was good. Worth a visit.

    Step back in time!
Free entry with Museumkaart, free audio tour and a €1 euro available from a machine in the kitchen. We really enjoyed our visit despite the Christmas decorations being put up around us. It's a double fronted house in one of the most expensive areas of Amsterdam.  Similar to the Van Loon Museum. A real step back in time that's thoroughly recommended.

Excellent View of a Canal House
A great museum that only takes about an hour to tour. Great view of a canal house and how the family and servants lived. Audio tour is excellent and explains the house and living style. Probably the only way most of us will see what an actual canal house looks like. Highly recommend the museum.

    Luxury Amsterdam style!
This was a lovely find. A luxurious couple who loved art, and left their beloved house to the public. The house is still being restored in parts, and you get to see layers of paint or snippets of material where the next work is planned. The audio guide was very informative and takes you through the social life of the couple and the necessary help from 'downstairs'. I loved the fact that tourists can sit down for a cup of tea in the actual kitchen of the house!

    Golden Age mansion
If you want to get inside one of the grand homes of Amseterdam's golden age this is worth a visit. Just of the interior garden in the French style. Was free with I Amsterdam card so we went in. Ended up being a highlight for us

I visited two years ago with my daughter and really enjoyed it. I came back to Amsterdam this month and brought my mother to the museum today, it's absolutely worth a visit. Plenty staff, reasonable price, self guided tour is excellent with ear piece offering so much information. It's not overly busy so you can really immerse yourself and imagine what living there must have been like.

We really enjoyed the tour of this four hundred year old home and unlike a few others, thought it was well kept. The furniture and the carpets were covered in areas so they would not be sat upon or walked over. There were numerous works of art displayed and this tour also had an audio guide that helped to explain everything to you as you went. It can take you as little as 45 minutes or as long as 2 hours to get in a good tour of the whole building and have a good understanding. This was a very good tour of an older canal home utilized by one of the elite members of that society.

The Willet-Holthuysen House is part of the Amsterdam Museum and is located along the same street as booking.com head-office. Spending about 1 hour touring this double-storey mansion, I find myself travelling back in time to the end of the 19th century and immersing into the lives of Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen, thanks to the informative audio guide. The period rooms are decorated with the arts and objects collections left behind by this wealthy couple. One of the understated museum in Amsterdam that is worth including into your itinerary.

The Willet-Holthuysen is a splendid example of a wealthy merchant's home in a magnificent city. Being able to tour the halls, rooms and private spaces really gave us an idea of how the merchant class lived in the Dutch golden age. The garden is really lovely and the octagonal Collector's room on the top floor is exquisite.

A great opportunity to see inside one of the canal-side homes and learn about the people who lived there. This home was donated to the city by its final resident. I loved learning about their lives and the work that has gone on to restore the home as well as the transition from the male-centric history of the home to one that is more inclusive of the final female owner and the staff. A quiet and welcome reprieve from the busy city.

We had a wonderful visit to this Canal House museum. We had not booked beforehand (it being Monday Morning, 1st week June). Friendly lady at reception where we received the audio guides. We learnt a lot about the couple who owned the house in the 19th century and collected many artefacts. The audio guide really gives a good impression of the life of this couple. I think it is wonderful that Mrs Willet-Holthuysen gave this canal house (built in the 17th century) to the city of Amsterdam so it could be used as a museum. The house also has a sizeable garden (unusual in the centre of this city). Toilets for visitors on many floors and free lockers for your bag and coat. No coffee shop - not necessary as you are near to coffee houses on the canals.

This was a lovely "double mansion" with period furniture and decorations and it was wonderful to see how these wealthy people lived. There was a video about Louisa and her love of pets, and about her marriage. For lovers of (especially Amsterdam) history, this is a must-visit. I was able to use my Amsterdam Card to get in. There are also various art installations (I saw Maaike Schoorel's work) so you can see something different if you visit again.

This was an amazing self paced tour. However, there are several levels of stairs with about 20 steps each level. No elevator. It’s a collection of such beautiful items. Well worth the visit. The garden is spectacular.

Fascinating look around a beautiful house in Rotterdam. It was very quiet so we were able to spend quite a while looking around. Great audio tours explaining the history. The garden at the rear is lovely, and the building itself so imposing. The architecture and history is wonderful - well worth a visit.

This double mansion contains many period rooms. Its beautiful salons are in the style of Louis XVI & the garden is symmetrically designed as a French formal garden.

The house was built for Jacob Hop, mayor of Amsterdam, around 1685.

In 1739 the outside was redesigned to look as it does today, in the then fashionable Louis XIV style.

Admission €12.50.
Free audio tour.
Toilets on site.
