What to expect
  • Depart from the center of Siena and head out for the range—that is, the hills of Tuscany. First, hop in a comfortable minivan and go to the stables to meet your horse. After a brief safety talk, put on your riding hat and hop on the saddle. Do a quick practice riding session in a riding arena and when you're comfortable on your gentle horse, set off for the rustic Tuscan countryside.  Start out riding at a leisurely pace, following your guide, as you trot long secluded road and then into verdant forests. Follow trails that zigzag through the countryside and go through ancient rustic villages. Marvel at the countryside, which includes a patchwork of quilt-style landscapes, as well as villa-crowned hills and ancient villages made up of terracotta-roofed houses.  Some of these trails are used as part of the Via Francigena, a centuries-old pilgrimage route that stretches from Canterbury in England all the way to Rome.  While the riding tour is more for novice or intermediate riders, more advanced riders are given the chance to trot or canter through stretches of the countryside. Head back to the stables. Help groom and unsaddle your horse and then get in the minivan for the short drive back to your hotel in central Siena.

Let's start with the written description:

Giddy up! Traverse the hills of Tuscany via a unique mode of transportation with this 2.3-hour guided horseback tour from Siena. Roam the rolling hills, some clad in grapevines, others blanketed with olive groves, as you and your horse calmly explore the region. Follow the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route, and pass through rustic villages, all while learning about the history of the place from your guide. See stunning scenery that you would not have had the chance to encounter. 1.5-hour horseback riding tour through Tuscan hills and villages. Round-trip transport from Siena to the Tuscan countryside by air-conditioned minibus

We aren't picky tourists...but this was kind of a waste of our time and $$. Considering the area we were.

#1. Our van/driver was 1/2 hour late with no notice sent to any of those waiting. When he did arrive he couldn't speak a word of English. We got in a van that we all just assumed was for the horse tour. The van was very dirty as well!!

#2. We arrive at the stables, which were amazing with lots of beautiful horses, and our guide couldn't speak a word of English. Now how the heck are we to figure out what to do. He had us sign a waiver, and then it took at least another 1/2 hr to 45 mins to get us all on horses with no explanation. (there were 5 of us) We've been on horses before so it was ok, but wasn't sure about the others.

#3. Finally, we take off on our path. I expected to see the rolling Tuscany hills, groves of beautiful olive trees, the grapevines, etc etc. What we saw on this tour did not match. We saw more beautiful scenery from our vespa tour (Tuscany Cycle....check them out) We rode thru some wooded area with low hanging branches that didn't show us anything. I didn't think the views were anything special.

The best thing we saw was a Shephard with his flock of sheep and 2 dogs.

#4. Since our guide couldn't speak English, as our reservation stated we would have an English guide, we had no history of the region or any comments whatsoever. Glad we didn't have an emergency.

#5. My horse had a bad leg and had a hard time getting down a hill and about fell down but the guide didn't come back and check it out, didn't come back to see if I needed help, NOTHING!!

It was a beautiful day and that was about all that was overly positive of our tour.

#6. Our trip is over and we arrive back at the stables. Our useless guide disappeared and our van driver was sitting around talking to some other people for a good 1/2 hr while we all waited for him to take us back.

Just not a pleasant experience.

Doesn’t match the description
As a family of four we booked an afternoon horse ride. None of us are experienced riders and my teenage son hadn’t ever ridden a horse. The driver at pick up had no English and our tour guide very, very basic.
We were asked to sign a disclaimer, given helmets and our horses and we were off. No instructions.
The scenery is breathtaking. That is the only part of the description that is correct.
About 3 quarters of the way through the ride the horse in front of mine kicked out nearly throwing my son off. The kick got me on my shin. As my horse reacted I fell off.
My leg was bleeding and swelling. I led my horse for a bit to stop my leg from stiffening then rode again then led again when going done a steep incline that put more pressure on my leg. My horse was fine.
On our return to the stables I was not offered anything to clean my leg up. There was quite a bit of blood and considerable swelling. I found a hose and used my own tissues to clean myself up.
Our guide left us immediately and our driver appeared and took us back to Siena.
