- Mare320 contributionsWorth visiting & thanks to our guide and driverGreat tour thanks to our driver Angelo and our experienced guide Lisbet ! We have done many tours with SAT GROUP and have never been disappointed : easy booking process, pick-up possibility at several places around Taormina, Giardini, Recanati. The program is respected, they are very punctual. During the trip we get a lot of practical information in several languages. Once arrived, our guide gives the detailed planning and let the guests decide if they join the group or go solo. Just be back in time, that's all. We recommend to stay with the group because Lisbet is an expert and takes time to answer questions and to give information you won't find in any book or brochure. Thanks, SAT GROUP, Angelo & Lisbet !Written August 17, 2024
- Tom19120 contributionsLike being on the surface of the moon.I gave the tour a 4 because 4.5 was not an option. We did the SAT tour yesterday evening and were fully familiar with what to expect. Collected by minibus on time, close to our hotel in Giardini Naxos, we made our way up the mountain via a vista point to a parking area where the normal road ends. Here, after a glass of vino and welcome toilet break, we, after a 45-minute break, transferred to a huge 4x4 jeep/coach with another group of people. We then made our way up the mountain by tracks forged in a 2002 lave flow, which destroyed a lot of the area, stopping off at various vantage points. Note that this is not suitable for those unsteady on their feet or with open footwear because the surface is very loose underfoot. The views, however, were amazing with interesting descriptions from the guide. Once we arrived at the highest plateau that we could by road/track, we witnessed a beautiful sunset, amazing views of Etna going into silhouette, and as dark fell, you could see spectacular minor eruptions from the highest of craters. A jacket is required as in resort it was 35 degrees, but at the top, I could see my breath. The return journey in darkness was interesting and not for the faint-hearted. We were transported by SAT to a wooden eatery whereby you could participate in food and beverages which were perfectly adequate. By 23.30, we were back in resort (which was determined by time of sunset). The minor reason we didn't give it 5 circles is that it became a little confusing when we were combined with another group at the 4x4 transfer, and as there were several on the mountain at the same time you could easily become confused as to which vehicle the rest of the SAT party was on. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our etna experience. Thanks to Franco, who was attentive and entertaining.Written August 14, 2024
- keithhZ5082NC0 contributionsSpoilt by broken down bus on return . An apology and an offer of a drink would be niceJourney there and stay in Etna great. To return we were told that the bus would leave at 2.20pm. At 2.55pm told that there was a problem with bus. Told to get off bus as replacement with arrive at 4pm. Apparently not first time this has happened. An apology and an offer of a drink would have been appreciated.Written August 12, 2024
- Kristyn H0 contributionsExcellent all around, even when not accessing the lands of StromboliThough Stromboli was closed due to safety, this trip was phenomenal and worth the energy it sucks out of you! The start time is reasonable and the road trip to the motorboat was beautiful. The boat ride was a great experience, however I do wish I grabbed food before the boat. The boat does have good food, but I wind up only eating the boat food the whole day (minus a gelato and vino in Panerea). It is a long day, but it was all worth it! The beach is a decent walk, water shoes were my best friend and thongs could easily break due to the amount of walking and rocks. Walking a little extra to the Bay Area of the beach was again worth it, but not easy. Very little shade in all parts as well, I was lucky to have brought my light floaty because the rocks are uncomfortable and hot! The ferry home was a mixture of party vibes & exhaustion but it was great!Written August 7, 2024
- Kristyn H0 contributionsGreat excursion, but too little of free timeI had a dream ponderous time in Palermo and Cefalu, however the free time was only 1.5hours… which really turns to be 45minutes or an hour depending on where it spent and the time it takes to get back. It’s just not enough time, especially in Cefalu when there complete freedom without a tour (which was great) but the walk to and from the drop off takes a decent amount of time from that anyway! I think it should be a longer amount of free time! The tour itself was great and the SAT guide as well as the Palermo guide did an excellent job and catered to many languages (at least 4) … but that did consume more time which was fine but worth nothing.Written August 7, 2024
- M3689WLanned0 contributionsWell worth itVery well organised and friendly tour guide who gave all the important information on the journey to Mount Etna. Fascinating to see all the new lava from the eruption the day before.Written August 6, 2024
- hoyleyy970 contributionsAn expensive day of travelling travellingWe chose this trip as we wanted to see Etna and the gorges. We were picked up at 7 am and spent 45 mins collecting everyone for the trip. This was ok but this added up with the long waits throughout the day. We then went straight to the gorges. It would have been helpful to know the correct footwear for this. As this is a trip to see the gorges we would expect the price to include this. It was €9 each which isn’t much but this adds up as the trip price was expensive. It was lovely down there so I would recommend going down! Then to the volcano! We thought… after an hours ride, we came to a train station. And got straight onto the train. This was at 12 - so you can imagine we were getting hungry. We were told there would be a lunch spot so assumed the train was taking us there? After 1-1.5hrs on an average train. We arrived at another train stop. We were told after that the ride was to see the pistachio trees. It was interesting to see where the lava had been but this long train was a waste of time. After coming off the train, and thought it was time for lunch, we were greeted by the bus again! We were then told it was 1.5hrs to Etna! We arrived at Etna and had paid for the cable cart up so straight up we went. It was a great experience going up and we hear eruptions! We then came back down, had a food and a drink and then went home. Another 1.5hrs. Luckily we were the first to be dropped off! The gorges and volcano was a good experience and I would recommend it. But the long journey to get there made it more unenjoyable. The day wasn’t clear. If it was we would have packed food with us. If you have a car you can take yourself to these places to cut costs. We did but was never told this. I think it is very misleading that it had the forges in the ticket but yet it is not included in this price.Written July 28, 2024
- Trail681298736390 contributionsA discovery! We spent a very beautifull day with the compagnie of Alessandra , a very goed guide and Tony, the very professionel bus conductor! The stop at the Alcantra river was very refreshing (water at 8 degrees! ), the one at Bronte village was the discovery of the best pistachio ice- cream we have ever eaten! The escalation at the Etna craters were quite impressive.Written July 27, 2024
- GoPlaces497309243010 contributionsStromboli yes, Panerea no.It was a long trip to Panarea. Not much to see. Getting to the beach was costly, for the short time we were allotted before going back to the boat. 20 euro each way to transport from the dock to the beach. 30 euros to rent a chair and umbrella for the 30 minutes you spent at the beach. Skip this!!! Stromboli was nicer. Seeing the volcanos small eruptions was exciting. If you can choose, pick an excursion that goes only to Stromboli.Written July 21, 2024
- Jordinho117580 contributionsBeautiful islands but the tour is a struggle5/5 for the islands, 2/5 for the tour package The islands are perfect. Panarea is beautiful, with panoramic views out to the sea and various islands. Stromboli is stunning. But the tour itself is just LONG. We were picked up at about 10am (slightly late), our bus didn’t have air conditioning so we had to stop and wait for another, but still made the boat which leaves at around 12:30 anyway. You get to Panarea for 2pm ish, where the guide tells you there is a walk and a beach, then leaves you to your own devices for 4 and a half hours.. the only bits the guide talks about are some rocks on the side and a brief bit of history, there is no guidance as such - but if you don’t mind trekking through an island in 35+ degrees to a little beach then this is your tour. As I said earlier, the island itself is beautiful. Around 7pm you then take the boat across to other islands, including Stromboli (we didn’t get to go on, which apparently sometimes you do but I don’t know when they usually fit that in). The other islands are just normal rocks, which seem to get the most attention from the guides - but Stromboli is striking. The active volcano is a wonder to behold as you sail around it completely, it is one of the best things I have ever done. The setting sun also adds that little extra to the day. You then blitz back across the water to the port, getting in around 10:30pm, to take the bus back to Taormina. The motorway was shut for us so we didn’t get back until 1am… luckily our air bnb host was extremely nice so it didn’t affect our check in. If you can do the trip yourself privately then definitely do it - otherwise it is still worth it for the views but buckle in!Written July 20, 2024
- Angelo And Andr... V0 contributionsLong day but worth itAfter reading many reviews for this trip I was very unsure but am so glad we did it. We met our bus at 10:00am & were dropped back off at 1:00am Yes it is very long (bring a book, take a nap) but Panarea was so worth it. It is a beautiful little island that you never knew you needed to see. We spent 4 hours there which despite other reviews, it was enough time to have lunch & go to the beach (bring your bathing suits-we did not because of the other reviews) After that we headed to Stromboli which we could not go on because it was too dangerous that day. This was disappointing but obviously understandable. We did not see it erupt. On the way back the highway was shut down so we had to drive through the town of Messina so it took longer. Again be prepared. Pack water & snacks if you need it. The boat does have a selection of food & beverages at a decent price. The only negative (besides not being able to go on Stromboli) was that the tour guide could have communicated what was happening a little better. For example we were not told we would not be docking & getting off the boat in Stromboli or that we should order food on the boat now as they were going to close.Written July 16, 2024

We booked this last minute as it was the only cooking class with availability for the following day. Overall we found that the group was just too big (maybe 20 to 25 people). There was one main chef and some other chefs rotating around the group but it just felt like a big production. The cooking part was very simple, no actual skills learned. The parts which were more complicated like frying aubergine or gutting the fish was already prepared for us. I also didn’t like that the food you prepared and handled gets mixed in with everyone’s food and you do not get your own back after it’s cooked. Some of it was handled a lot like the pasta and swordfish rolls rolled by hand. It totally put me off eating any of it knowing it had been in everyone’s hands (maybe that’s just me!).
Despite those couple of points we (couple) did really enjoy the experience and it was a good way to pass a few hours whilst it was raining. The chef was fun and the location was very nice. I liked the choice of dishes that we made. We met some lovely people in the group. One of the best things was there was a lot of wine served and we were able to stay for a while after the session chatting to some of the others we had met. Overall I would recommend if booking last minute as it seems that some of the more popular cooking classes are not available.

I was disappointed in this experience. Tour meet up location was not clear, they left for the market before we arrived (which was on time). You could not hear the guide at the market. We did not shop for the food at the market, not sure the benefit of going there.
The class is at a restaurant with customers being served during the class. There are different instructors during the class. Only one was good and explained the food, cooking techniques.
We made salt crusted fish that was loaded with bones because of poor cleaning and inedible. The eggplant Parmesan was somewhat edible but soup like due to poor cooking guidance to the people making it.
We made pasta and a lot of it but only had one small bowl barely one serving for a table of 12.
It was so hot the entire time trying to prepare the dishes as we were by the pizza oven in an outdoor area.
I’ve done several cooking classes in the past and never had an experience like this.
I left the class early and went to get lunch because it was so disappointing. Unfortunately I would not recommend this class.

It is such a pity you did not report your feelings at the chef or at our agency staff, we could have compensated some how. Surely that day the number of participants was high, since we never receive complaints on the cooking class. It would have been better to discuss it on spot, now it is too late...we are sorry for that! SAT Group staff

Chef Paolo first took us to a market to show us all the various vegetables, and to explain how they are used. That was great fun because he is such an interesting and entertaining fellow. We went back to the restaurant and learn to make pasta. Then we learned to make salt baked fish, delicious. When it was done, we learned how to fillet it. Then we learned how to make very delicious eggplant Parmesan. And if that wasn’t enough, we also learned to make excellent breadcrumbs, and to create a sardine and crusted breadcrumbs.
Paolo very amusing with his stories about his grandmother, and how he learned to cook the hard way.
Midway, we had a break for wine and cheese and bread,
When the cooking was done, we all sat down to a very delicious meal that we had made, of course, with the help of a very busy and very friendly kitchen staff. We got aprons to take home, and and Paolo sent us the recipes so that we could continue to cook Sicilian style. It was a great adventure and I highly recommend it as a wonderful way to spend a long morning to afternoon.

This was the best tour in all of Sicily. Mimo and his mother were great hosts, and showed us how to make a typical 3 course Sicilian meal. We started with shopping at the market and proceeded to first make fresh pasta, an eggplant caponata, and rolled swordfish entre. Our group was 10 people and we fit nicely into the restaurant with plenty of room for us all. By the time we finished and ate a delicious meal we were all friends.

One of the best and most fun experiences! Everyone is so friendly and very clearly enjoys their work! The staff make this course into something truly special. They perfectly balance the cooking to be fun but also educational. There is a wide variety of of what is cooked through out the class, so there’s something for everyone (from the least experienced cooks to the top chefs). Everything tastes delicious and everyone becomes friends by the end of the class. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who can do it! They will also send you an email with all the recipes you made at the end of the class. The views from the restaurant are fantastic and only add to this wonderful experience!

Very nice cooking course, easy recipe to make fresh pasta. Caponata and swordfish fillet were the other dishes. Note that local market is quite small but we didn’t really mind. Wine and water throughout the course.

A practical class with "hands on" where you can easily learn and use the techniques at home for preparing delicious Sicilian dishes. Not only that! It is a lot of local touch and humanity. Regards.

My husband and I were lucky enough to have a private cooking class at this Restaurant in Taromina. Luca was the Chef and he was very entertaining. We learned a lot of information on the foods sold at the local market. We Made about 8 different dishes including how to bake a fish. He shared family recipes and told us alot about his Nona who cooked and made pasta for 20 people every Sunday. The local wine was fabulous and the whole experience was wonderful. I definitely recommend this cooking class. We are hoping to go back again in the future it was truly a fun morning.

This was a great expierence that I`ll always remember. My hosts Luca and Stefano took care of me and the other members of the class like honored guests of the restaurant. The meals were authentic and simple enough to reproduce back at home. The market shopping was fun and interesting to learn about the the fresh seafood, vegetables and fruits. What separates this expierence from other activities is the people that work at Porta Messina Ristorante.

IMO a 4-yo is too young. The class from start to finish is about 2.5-3, lots of walking to the market, then the restaurant, then standing while making the dough. I feel you would be supervising a 4-yo more than participating. Making the dough is not an easy quick job. Not sure the food prepared for lunch wold be eaten by a 4yo.
