Wonderful experience
Oct 2021
Well worth the trip. helpful guide and beautiful scenery along the way. If I have to do this again, I wouldn't do it via the tour but book the ticket on the train myself, stop of along the way and enjoy the various towns and come back with the train. The bus ride to the train station wasn't too bad. The 3hr ride back was a bit much. If you're taking this during Autumn and winter, dress appropriately, very windy and cold!

Beautiful tour with knowledgeable, attentive guide.
We took this day trip out of Milan and loved the beautiful views of the bus ride past Lake Como, the town of Tirano, and of course the amazing Bernina Express. Words cannot do the views justice. Sara was a great guide and very knowledgeable. We had ample stops along the way there and back to stretch our legs and grab a snack or use the restroom. Highly recommended.

Not what expected
Feb 2020 • Friends
The view of the alps and train ride were great. There were too many stops along the way when we could have been in st moritz for longer. You barely had enough time to walk to the city of st.moritz before you had to get on a very long bus ride back to Milan and then there was another stop on the way home. I would not recommend this trip if you want to see St. Moritz because you are not their long enough to enjoy the town.

Dear guest, I am sorry you did not fully enjoy our tour. But I would like to say that the purpuse of this trip is not to get to St. Moritz as fast as possible. Our tour is design to enjoy a one of a lifetime train ride experience. Climbing the Alps with a pace of another time, savoring every twist and where every turn is a photo opportunity. If you want just to visit Sankt Moritz and take a ride on the Bernina Express, one day is not sufficient. Best regards

Absolutely Gorgeous
Jan 2020
On a trip to Italy that was mostly focused on the city of Milan, my wife and I decided to see some of the countryside as well. We chose this tour based on the many excellent reviews that we read. Even so, we were not prepared for how amazingly beautiful the scenery would be. The trip starts in Milan's city center, then travels, via bus, past Lake Como, through vineyards, and the pre-Alps to the town of Tirano, Italy. There is a brief tour there, and then free time or the option to have lunch. We chose to have the optional lunch (an additional expense) to try the local fare. We highly recommend the bresaola appetizer (local air-dried, aged beef that is salami-like in appearance) and the pizzoccheri alla Valtellinese, the signature dish of the region-- pasta made of buckwheat flour with a sauce containing potatoes, cabbage, butter, and cheese. It was quite different from the Italian dishes we are accustomed to and very tasty. Then we caught the train, and were soon across the border into Switzerland. Talk about a "winter wonderland." The views were stunning. The people in our train car, alone, must have taken thousands of photographs and videos in total. The train climbed its way to the highest point on the railroad, past frozen lakes, snowfields, and glaciers, then down to the resort town of St. Moritz. As other reviews have stated, the visit there is short, and naturally we would have liked to have had more time, but the total trip was 12 hours in length as it was. Be sure to visit the Laderach Chocolate shop while in St. Moritz and indulge yourself with a purchase of some of the heavenly sweets. As the light faded, another bus ride brought us down through the Alps, and back to Milan. While some would complain about the length of the bus rides as opposed to time on the train, we found this time to be quite enjoyable, as it was educational, thanks to the guides, and the scenery through the terraced vineyards and pre-Alps was very interesting and beautiful on its own. While we took this trip in January, I am certain that it would be gorgeous whatever the season. This was a wonderful 12 hours.

Long day!
Here is our day on 1-2-2020
You NEED passports, customs may stop the train at the border.

Alarm went off 4:45 am.
Pick up at our hotel 6:10.
Drop off outside of visitors center, that is not open yet. wait 20 min for bus.
129 people Check in on 3 buses
Meet tour guide and get a radio and headphones.

Left bus stop at 7:20 small tour of Milan on the way out of town till 7:35 then take nap because there is “nothing to see”

Briefly see lake Cumo. Lots of time in tunnels and not much scenery.

9:20 Stop at tourist trap in Ardenno and pay to use bathroom then wait in long line to pay for cappuccino and biscuits leave at 9:50

Bus crawls through traffic till 11 am.
Spend 20 minutes at a church on outside of Tirano. Get your souvenirs here, they will be cheaper than in St Moritz and you have more time.

Then park behind train station at 11:30. They will suggest you join them for lunch (for an extra charge) at a restaurant they frequent. You only get two choices and are mass-served all at once.

We chose not to, and had a great fresh meal at a small bistro. No lines
For the bathroom and great service.

Either way, make sure you eat, this is your only opportunity to eat all day.

Meet 12:45 train leaves at 1:00 sharp
The train is a Narrow-gauge electric tram that runs on the street for a while. We sat on the right side as the train moved forward. I do believe this was the better side, but people are free to move around and take pictures. The windows slide down so you can get good shots, something you can’t do on a regular train.
Some of the train cars have glass arched windows (ours did not) so you could see out the top. I don’t consider it a deal breaker because you can reach out the windows with your camera and most of the sights are below the train.

The train ride is 2 hours long. You will see your bus several tImes as it passes the train. You will get on it again to go back to Milan.

Arrive St Moritz 3:10 time to get a cappuccino at a cafe near the train station but not much else. The actual town is a few blocks away. And not enough time.

4:15 get back on your bus to go back to Milan

There is a 20 minute stop at Pizzo for a drink and the bathroom. We also sat through a ton of traffic from there back to Milan.

Back at 8:15. Four hour bus ride. You then have to get back to your hotel on your own, we went out for dinner.

You could do this without a guide or agency.
You could take a take a standard train from Milan Central to Tarini. Then switch to the Bernini express, then take a standard train from St Moritz back to Milan. You may have to switch trains at some point on the way. With all the different tickets, train schedules, and times, it can be a bit much.

As much as I don’t like structured tours, this did take a lot of frustration out of planning it. It was a very long day, 15 hours, for a 2 hour train ride.
If we were to do it on our own, we would probably book a night in St Moritz and then travel to yet another destination in Europe.

If you found this review helpful please give it a thumbs up!

Incredible!
This is a long day! We set off in the coach and the guide had fun facts about sights we were passing and we stopped at a lovely place to get coffee and pastry on the way. When we got off the coach we had an incredible lunch with the help of our guide trying a great (bit oddly sounding) local pasta dish! Then boarded the train (I would recommend Sitting on the left as you travel forwards. The windows in standard class roll down for incredible photo opportunities and constant tips from the guide! The coach ride back is painfully long but has a lovely winding road down the mountain that’s amazing to experience!
