A Memorable Cooking Experience with Chef Luigi in Lake Como – September 2023
My fiancé and I had the pleasure of taking a cooking class with Chef Luigi during our trip to Lake Como in September 2023, and we couldn’t wait any longer to share how fantastic the experience was! Although this review is long overdue, we wanted to make sure Chef Luigi received the praise he truly deserves. From the moment we walked into his restaurant, Chef Luigi made us feel right at home. His charisma and energy set the tone for the entire class, and he created a warm, fun, and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you were an experienced cook or a beginner in the kitchen, Chef Luigi made sure that everyone felt included and engaged. His teaching style was both informative and interactive, ensuring that we learned not only the techniques behind making fresh pasta but also the secrets to creating dishes that are staples of Italian cuisine. The highlight of the class was undoubtedly making our own noodles. Chef Luigi took us step by step through the process, from mixing the dough to rolling it out and shaping it into perfect strands. He was patient, approachable, and offered helpful tips throughout, which made it easy to follow along and feel confident in our abilities. The best part was getting to enjoy the fruits of our labor at the end of the class – the pasta was absolutely delicious, and we couldn’t believe we had made it ourselves! Beyond the cooking, the atmosphere Chef Luigi fostered was truly special. He made sure everyone felt comfortable, whether it was encouraging a beginner or sharing a laugh with seasoned cooks. It felt less like a class and more like a delightful experience with friends. We especially appreciated how Chef took the time to explain not just the “how,” but the “why” behind each step, giving us a deeper understanding of Italian cooking traditions. This experience was a highlight of our time in Lake Como, and we left Chef Luigi’s restaurant not only with full stomachs but with a newfound appreciation for Italian cooking. If you’re looking for a fun, interactive, and unforgettable culinary adventure, we highly recommend taking a cooking class with Chef Luigi. You’ll walk away with amazing skills, great memories, and the chance to learn from one of the best chefs in the region. Thank you, Chef Luigi, for such a memorable experience! We hope to return one day to cook with you again!

      Wonderful once schedule fixed
A great experience, with Luigi’s brother and nephew, Luca, running the event due to a scheduling error that meant the chef could not attend. Roberto and Luca were wonderful, gracious hosts. The stovetop cheese making was done at Roberto’s home as we sampled a number of cheeses and wine pairings as he explained the cheese-making process. Then we continued with a full cheese and meat board & wine as he shielded us how to make rossori, which we then enjoyed for lunch. Oh, and his home was atop a hill overlooking Lake Como…wow. Check dates and the agenda carefully given our experience and other reviews, but we had a great time.

      Wonderful experience
The wines were delicious and Luigi was very entertaining! The tasting room was so beautiful and unique. We stayed for dinner after our tasting and had the most wonderful meal.

Hidden Gem - Unmatched in the Area
Jarocho is on the KANSAS side of the state line in Kansas City. It's at 719 Kansas Ave,, Kansas City, KANSAS. It's a Mexican Seafood restaurant just off I-70. The food is award-winning (Best Seafood, Best Mexican) and the service is outstanding. The dishes are based on what you would find in Veracruz, Mexico. I had Ceviche and a dozen oysters on the half-shell. My daughter had a delicious shrimp soup, and our friend had very tasty stuffed trout. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the food and the culture and history of Veracruz. We were very pleased; we'll certainly go back!

      Overpriced and lacks value
Not worth the money. Chef is character that is funny at first then irritating. He gets easily distracted as he clearly views cooking class as last priority to his other commitments. Also you definitely do t experience what is outlined in class. Book another option as this is not of value. We have done many classes internationally with amazing chefs as well as local chefs. This was by far the experience we enjoyed the least.

Over priced and low on experience
This experience is nothing like its represented. The cheese tasting involved stopping at a local cheese shoo see the cheese but you don't actually taste any. The class is a rushed, simp!e execution of some pasta with very little of the chefs time. He is a character and amusing at first but then quite irritating. The salad served at lunch as well as the wine were the highlight. Do not spend your money on this.

      Be in a larger group
With Luigi focused on a couple that was planning they're wedding we were left forgotten and the rest of the staff didn't really know what do do with us. All round, seeing that is was the off season and we where the only people registered for the class and the chef being busy with other things, the right thing would have been to cancel. Not terrible as the food was good but the experience was rushed and not worth the money paid.

We learned a lot about truffles, the region and Chef Luigi's accomplishments. A super excursion, well worth it.
Amazing to harvest truffles and mushrooms on the property of the restaurant. Golden retrievers to sniff out the location of truffles, then Roberto (chef Luigi did not join us in person) dug the truffle up. The dogs found several; enough for our cooking class. Steep walk on slippery leaves, not for the faint at heart but totally worth it. We were in a group of 8 although we expected to be just the two of us, as the tour was labeled private. Departure point NOT at the car ferry as mentioned on website, but from the next ferry over on the square. The cooking class was a lot of fun and the 4 course luncheon was great, with ample red wine. Chef Luigi is very talented and was making jokes while explaining what we had to do in his kitchen. The servers were well trained and very polite. Totally worth it; my comments are just to help you set expectations.

A unique experience.. incredible place and atmosphere 😍
We were so excited to see Chef Gandola.👌We tasted excellent wines and with an excellent selected menu to properly taste the taste of each wine from different years and vintages..The cellar, the restaurant and the people who took care of us were great and the whole team it works great..it is worth visiting this family gem and trying all the authentic things there..My son loves to cook and so At my request we were seated in front of the glass showcases of the kitchen at a special table from which we could personally observe how prepares the truly unique menu here..Words cannot describe this experience and I highly recommend you go and see for yourself. I'm sorry we didn't have time to enroll in Chef Gandola's cooking class to learn the secret of cooking Italian cuisine from the best at it. I hope we can visit the restaurant again and immerse ourselves in the magic of this place. 🌹🥇🙏🍷🤩👌

      Amazing!!
This was an experience we will never forget! Chef Luigi, wife Camilla, and the rest of his family and staff were amazing. We registered for the pasta cooking class. This started out with a tour of his garden, and then the kitchen. We made our own pasta, we’re able to take lots of photos, and then ate, and ate, and ate some more! The food was beautiful and delicious, and he and his staff were most gracious. At the end of the evening, the kitchen was busy, and we asked them to call a taxi for us so as not to disturb them. They wouldn’t hear of it, and insisted on driving us back to town! If you have a chance, take this class!!

      Fun class.
We loved the chefs personality. We learned about making pasta and ragout. We would have liked to know the recipes of the other sauce he made. It was delicious.

One of the best excursions we've ever done. Would highly recommend when visiting Bellagio area. We first went out for truffle hunting with Luigi and his dog which yielded several truffles. Back at the restaurant we made homemade pasta and dessert. We then sat down for probably our favorite meal of the trip where we ate the pasta we made along with plenty of truffle in every dish. The wine was delicious and the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Can't recommend this experience enough. Well worth the money!

Looking for a unique experience on our second trip to Lake Como, we definitely found it in the mushroom and truffle hunt with Chef Luigi. We were picked up at the dock and driven to Salice Blu, traded vehicles and headed up the hills where we spent the rest of the afternoon roaming the forest in company with Luigi and one of his staff, a mushroom authority and of course the truffle dog.

After an excellent harvest we returned to the restaurant and began prepping dinner, including caring for and chopping the mushrooms, making pasta dough, risotto and dessert. Once our Italian cooking skills were exhausted we were ushered to the patio and enjoyed a truly exquisite meal and the warm hospitality of the restaurant.

Overall this was a much more encompassing experience than we anticipated; not only dramatically enhancing our appreciation of mushrooms, but for one day being part of a fun Italian family passionate about cuisine and a great time.

We highly recommend this activity if you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty and enjoy a mostly easy walk in the woods. If not, then don’t miss Salice Blu where you can experience Luigi’s knowledge and passion of the local ingredients in a beautiful relaxing setting.

On a side note: Luigi went above and beyond and personally drove us back to the ferry where we made it with two whole minutes to spare. We met his wife, mom and grandma, and genuinely had a wonderful time. We will wear the aprons every time we prepare mushrooms.

My husband and I booked the truffle hunting with Luigi Gandola, and the entire experience was a huge disappointment. Leading up to the event, Luigi had very poor communication and took weeks to respond to messages. We had to send him 3-4 messages before getting a response.

Our event was supposed to start at 10AM. On the day of the event at 9AM, he messaged us, "Are you available at 3PM instead?" and we said no, since we had other plans. He then said "I can only do 3PM. See you at 3PM." We had to involve Tripadvisor customer support to get a refund, since we weren't able to make the time and he was refusing to refund us. It's clear that Luigi overextends himself, double books, and is very bad at managing his own schedule.

I would stay away from this experience and the restaurant.
