- Meander309211017660 contributionsBrilliant experienceAn absolutely fantastic tour. Marina our tour guide was lovely - charming and informative. The food was delicious across the five stops and Marina included a lot of detail about how the food was produced as well as interesting historical facts about the city and tips for many places to visit. Would highly recommend this tour as an introduction to the city.Written October 9, 2024
- wendyc410 contributionsA MUST do on your first day of arrival.Marina is absolutely magnificent. She opened our eyes to local Genovese food. Everything was yummy and we just kept stuffing our face. We were just floored with the flavors, she turned my husband who is a non believer of focaccia into a lover of focaccia. Marina is very informative, a true local - the food stop places love her, they immediately welcome her soon as they see us. We experienced so much, we want to go back and visit the places for more the next day. Even if it was raining all day, the food tour brightened our day.Written October 8, 2024
- Dream5912440 contributionsFood Tour of GenoaMadi (sp?) from Do Eat Better tours was our guide. She led us through the harbor and historic parts of Genoa. My husband and I loved learning about the architecture and history of the city. We ate the delicious traditional food from the stands and restaurants where the locals eat. I would recommend this tour to anyone!Written October 3, 2024
- 229maximilianm0 contributionsGreat food and an introduction to the cityWe had a wonderful evening in the centre of Genova. Our guide Marina was not only really friendly and funny, but have great insight into the culture and history of the city, the people and of course the food. She gave a lot of tipps what to visit, so it makes sense to do the tour early in your trip.Written October 1, 2024

- 794lindseyv0 contributionsFun and delicious experience! It was an excellent tour of the historic section! Beatrice was extremely friendly and an terrific guide- not only did she take us to delicious stops, but she gave us an in-depth tour at stops along the way. It really brought the city to life and was a definite highlight of our entire trip. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Genoa who wants a greater appreciation for the city and doesn’t want to miss the local cuisine.Written September 15, 2024

- Y7186DYkevinm0 contributionsNot so good.I really didn't like this class and I didn't like the food that we some how managed to prep. I think we were both sceptic and not so sure that we were taught the traditional way. Probably they think that Londoners don't know anything about food.Written September 5, 2024
- LilyLaux0 contributionsDelicious tour! Our host was very friendly and knowledgable. The stops were all delicious. We had focaccia with cappuccino, several kinds of pasta (of course one with pesto!), focaccia col formaggio, local almond cake, and coffee. We had a wonderful time and would absolutely recommend this to tour to other travelers (though do come hungry!).Written September 2, 2024
- Étienne N0 contributionsA great evening with an amazing guide! We had the chance to be just two on our group. Valentina have been a great guide. She said right away that she was not an historian of genoa or a "real tour guide", but as a local, she gave us a lot info about the town and the region. She was joyful and entertained the conversation. We ate at multiples traditional places and Valentina gave us other place to try during our stay in Genoa. Would recommand to any foody!Written August 25, 2024

- jeansM8212OP0 contributionsBest cooking class experienceMy daughter, granddaughter and I had a cooking class in Genoa with La Locanda Tortuga. Madda found us at the specified meeting place and took us to the perfectly set up local shop, where Mimmo demonstrated and then watched and commented as we prepared several items, including a pesto, testarolli, focaccia and canestrelli cookies. We actually participated in all the processes, which made the experience much better than most cooking classes I've had. Madda translated everything Mimmo said, in short phrases and it was easy to follow. Best cooking class (of many) ever! Of course we ate everything we prepared and we were even given the canestrelli left over to take with us.Written July 22, 2024

Veronica was an incredible host and made you feel at home the entire time. I can’t express how much we enjoyed her. We had a family of 9 and they were so accommodating. From the ages of 13 to 82 and we all had the time of our lives. The owner was outstanding and taught us how to make hand-made pesto. The best pesto in the world along with hand-made focaccia. Such an amazing experience. We recommend to everyone and to all ages.

This was definitely the highlight of our trip! Veronica was amazing with her explanations of the city and the history of the area. Full of recommendations and advice, we truly appreciated her upbeat attitude and wealth of knowledge. Roberto was also an amazing instructor and his personality made us feel like we were at home speaking to a long time friend while learning some of the secrets of a few special dishes they have served for years. We not only made some great memories at this class, but left with a few recipes and the knowledge of how to re create these dishes in our own kitchens. Plenty of laughs, great tasting food, and some new skills learned.. we couldn't recommend this class more!

It was an all-round successful cooking and baking lesson in which we learned a lot and laughed a lot. Highly recommended! The idea behind it, that you can take a piece of "secret" traditional knowledge home with you and pass it on, is what excites me the most. My daughter had a lot of fun too! We can finally make the perfect pesto and "the best Focaccia Frommagio ever" - thanks!

It was just amazing! There were only two of us and we had a great time. We made homemade pasta, foccacia, pesto and biscuits! Everything was well organised. The chef was great and our guide had lots of additional insights into traditional food in Liguria. We can only recommend the cooking class! Thank you very much!

My son and I really enjoyed this authentic cooking experience. Our guide, Marina, was already waiting for us at the appointed place and took us to our "classroom" at a local Ligurian restaurant. Our hands-on cooking experience from a local chef was amazing, but it was Marina who not only translated but added cultural context and insights that made it complete. She also gave us great tips for later in our travels through Italy. Highly recommend the class, and five stars for Marina whose knowledge and fun personality made it memorable.

My friends bought me a solo ticket for this course as a graduation gift, so I had to join some others I didn’t know to participate. At the time, I was recovering from an injury that made it hard for me to stand for long periods. This made me a little worried about going alone, but I didn’t want to miss out! When our local expert Veronica learned this, she was incredibly accommodating and kind. She ensured I had places to rest and was even taking pictures for me so I could show my friends later. The course was a lot of fun with great atmosphere. I felt like I learned a lot. Plus the food was delicious! I am looking forward to making it again someday for my friends to try. I was really glad I decided to take a chance on joining in the end!

We had an opportunity to do a cooking with lesson with Bernado at his restaurant in Genoa.
It was a small group (with me and my teen granddaughters/nephews) and a husband/wife. Under Bernado instruction, we learned to make authentic pesto sauce and then some pasta/cheese bread and dessert.
He was a great teacher and clearly passionate about his craft! Veronica (our guide) was very helpful as well.
After all was prepared - we got to sample what we cooked! The kids really enjoyed the experience (as did I) - actually getting to prepare the meal vs. just watching. It was a unique experience.
Note - we did have challenges finding the location! The meeting place is under the arches where the original Christopher Columbus house is located (you meet the guide there) but this is not where the cooking experience is! It's a restaurant around the corner.

This was an excellent experience. Rita, our host, and Bernardo, our chef/coach made sure our group had an excellent time. This class was equal parts fun and educational. The food we made was simple and fantastic. You’ll have a great time and bring home a few recipes that you can share with friends and family. I would highly recommend.

Really great way to spend some of our day in Genoa. Our guide, Veronica, provided lots of information before, during and after the class. She was a great translator for the chef to help guide us through the recipes. The pesto, testaroli, focaccia al formaggio and canestrelli were delicious. The class is a great mix of hands on and learning from watching the chef. The recipes were an unexpected but delicious deviation from traditional pasta and focaccia. Highly recommend!

Marina was an amazing guide, so friendly and knowledgeable of Genoa culture and culinary history. Bernie and his staff at Locanda Tortuga were welcoming, funny and very patient with their “students”. Highly, highly recommend.
