About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- marlai20130 contributionsGreat day in Genoa! We enjoyed a wonderful day with Karl-ate amazing foods, drank delicious Prosecco, and learned some history of this interesting area of Italy. Karl’s passion for his city is evident and his enthusiasm kept us going, even in the rain. He even bought us umbrellas! I highly recommend this tour.Written May 17, 2024
- Sue S0 contributionsGuide - 5 out of 5; Tripadvisor - 0Problem was that Tripadvisor did not confirm the guided tour. When I had had no word back from Tripadvisor, I called my daughter in Australia to check if anything had been taken from my credit card account - no. Eventually Karl phoned to ask where we were but we had lost hours while he waited for us. We had no idea where we were to meet, should the tour have been confirmed, by the way. Fail on the part of Tripadvisor. But Karl was BRILLIANT, when we did eventually catch up with him. He had studied political science at university and was full of fascinating facts and history of Genoa. He also took us to some great cafes and food stalls and was very likeable as well. He met an acquaintance who showed us his apartment, with ceilings made with wood from abandoned sailing ships in the 14th century. What a privilege. SueWritten October 28, 2022

We had a wonderful day with Karl and were very fortunate to be the only two people on the tour. Karl is obviously very passionate about his city and offered a unique insight into its history. It was a great lecture throughout the day filled with amazing food and drink. The affirmation of our choice to visit the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno the next day was spot on. We were a bit hesitant to go at first as we were planning to take the bus there. We are always a little leery of taking busses in foreign cities as we get a bit nervous about not knowing which stop to depart. The bus system in Genova we were pleasantly surprised to find is very easy to navigate and has a message board on the bus that tells you which stop is next. We would highly recommend spending the day with Karl- he will treat you very well and you will certainly enjoy yourself. Molto grazie Karl per una giornata memorabile e anche il libro. Ciao!

Genoa can be a little intimidating when you first arrive, especially as a solo traveller. The labyrinth of alleyways, and the dichotomy between beauty and history is both fascinating and eye opening. Yet Karl, with his energy and passion, had me falling in love with this city over and over again. So much so that I would have stayed indefinitely, just to explore and continually immerse myself in its never ending wonder. This isn’t a touristy tour, it’s one with heart, which is why I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to truly understand this Italian city.

We just finished this tour with Karl Ziegler, I can honestly tell you that this was the most incredible tour we’ve ever taken of any city in Europe, and yes, we have traveled a lot.
Karl was so meticulous about the history of the city, the background of every place we’ve seen, he was very passionate about all places he showed us, you can tell how much he loves sharing all of his knowledge with people who were lucky enough to have him as a tour guide.
During the tour, we tried some delicious food, he allowed us to have a lot of breaks and that was beyond helpful from someone nursing an old knee injury (me). We ended the tour with delicious cone of gelato ( pistachio for me of course). It was so much fun spending the day with him, and saying goodbye to him was like saying goodbye to an old friend.

Ciao !!! Waht a pleasure to read about you Syrian Girl. Well the lucky one is my in this case.
Meeto smart, beautiful and intelligent people is a wonderful thing and realize how fascinating many of them are is a great luck. Your Exotic Class was unique indeed :-).
I'm always very happy to show the little history Genoa has to people that knows history and love it and especially people that come from areas that " created " history of where history was created.
It has been a great pleasure for me to be at your service, for sure and to see how much you love history. Thank you.
I hope we will meet again around the world in a beautful part of the world and discuss of history facing a stunning spot and possibly drinking a sweet mint tea or a kebap done the " right way " or a Cous Cous or some Humus :-).
Keep going traveling please :-).
Ciao and hugs
thank you.

Karl was our guide for this tour and provided us with a wonderful experience. He is extremely informative and passionate about the city of Genoa. We were a little late because of the traffic, but he put us at ease, was waiting patiently when we arrived and was willing to extend the tour so we didn't miss anything. However, we wore out before he did! We highly recommend this tour especially if Karl is your guide.

Genoa, a city of a thousand faces, from the narrow streets that cross the entire city, to the historic center, to the large squares, to the beautiful fishing village of Boccadasse, to the spectacular aquarium. Public transport works very well. We ate very well everywhere, in fine restaurants as well as in average restaurants and in St Ford. Typical dishes, pesto with trofie, various types of focaccia, farinata, fried fish, "muscoli" or mussels, desserts etc. etc. We take home a beautiful memory and lots of photos and videos to freeze this beautiful experience in time.
Genoa was a great discovery.

Good day:-).
Thank you so much for your visit and time spent in Genoa. I see that the food part has is own part in your appreciation :-).
As you understood this is not a Touristic city and that why is different as you noticed. When back again go to discover the secrets of the coast like Camogli and sestri Levante, you will Love it.
Ciao again thank you and keep going travelling ;-).

We had an absolutely brilliant day !
Carl was very informative and explained the history in a way which was easy to understand and never boring .
We were given opportunities to view places that we would never have found or been able to access .
Our group was just the right size to thoroughly enjoy every point of the tour and Carl certainly facilitated the ease in which we all got along so well and in fact made new friends .
Fabulous company , food , drink and history , Carl went over and above what we expected and we will remember this tour as one of the best we have ever taken !!
Thanks Carl so much appreciated

A top flight experience with a highly knowledgeable and passionate guide.
I saw many details that are typically not even evident to the casual observer. Very eye-opening in terms of the various phase of Genovese history - governments, trade, architecture and religion. He made a stop a “da gio’” for probably the best focaccia I have ever tasted. Lunch was an excellent plate of pasta ai porcini. Yes, walked fast but that can easily be adjusted. He knows the town so very well, a joyful 4.5 hours. Highly recommend!

Karl is amazing. We met him at the train station and somehow he knew who we were as we were walking in. I think Karl views himself as a host in his city and he plays the role effortlessly. We loved the way he told the stories of the city. He interacted amazingly with my teenage sons (Karl plays baseball in Italy). My wife enjoyed the day so much. Karl comes fully prepared. It started to rain and he pulled out coats (we didn't need them). Everything is truly included; I did not pull out my wallet once. Karl was generous and went above and beyond. I will admit that I have a little man crush on Karl; he's cool. It's not cheap but this tour is worth every penny. Best day I can imagine.

Poor experience. The guide cancelled 10 minutes after the tour was supposed to start. We travelled for an hour to get to the meeting point and had to call the guide after the meeting time - that was when he cancelled. I would avoid this tour operator.

True. I didnt show up and i call at 10.00.
Real and i can only apologize.
I couldnt get there in time as i woke up at the wrong time ( alarm o clock cheat me cause i obviously set it the wrong way ) as i arrived from Mauritania after a 24 hours journey and i made a mistake with the watch. The car was not available and then i had to cancel the tour and immediatly refund you and apologize a milkion times.
I sell emotions and i know how bad and stressful is when this things happends.
It was the first time in 7 years and i m so sorry that was you involved. Sorry, nothing worst that frustrate expectations . At last when i call you at night you didnt jell at me that is a sign you had ( maybe) not way the day.
So sorry, really. Anyway, hope that you are somewhere around the world enjoying yorself. Ciao :-). K
