    Excellent guided tour of Ravenna
We booked a private guided tour of Ravenna, arranging everything over email. Responses to our requests were received very promptly and when we arrived by train from Bologna we were met at the railway station by Chiara, who guided us round the UNESCO sites and Ravenna itself. She was so knowledgeable, friendly and engaging that the time flew by. We had plenty of time in each location to take pictures and learned far more from Chiara about the mosaics, buildings and history than we would have done if we had tried to do the same trip on our own with a guidebook. It was an excellent experience and we thoroughly recommend booking Chiara or one of the other Il Papavero guides to anyone else planning a trip to Ravenna.

    A great guide service
Ravenna has so much to offer that it is difficult to figure out how to go about it. Without good advice you could miss some great sites. The guide service was excellent: we were taken to the most important sites and given pointers on what to see next and most importantly what restaurants to visit! Our guide Chiara Rubboli was well informed, pleasant, spoke very good English and was very accommodating of our needs.

Use the Papavero & Abaco guides to get the most out of Ravenna
These are the authorized guides for visiting Ravenna. It's well worth it to hire them since they will give you a better visit to the city's mosaics than you can get from a guidebook. Guides are knowledgeable about the methods for making mosaics, the history of politics and church at the time (5th & 6th century) as well as the symbolism of the figures represented in the mosaics. They offer 3 hour tours for 100 euros and at my request gave me the itinerary in advance so I could visit other, less complicated sites, on my own. Together we saw the Galla Placidia, San Vitale and St. Appollinaire Nuovo, plus Dante's tomb (about which there's an interesting story) and finally we visited a mosaic studio (definitely not any sales pitch, professionals who were producing major pieces of art) where we briefly watched an artisan cutting the glass using the ancient methods. They will do tour in any language that suits your group. My fabulous guide was Manuela. Book through their website. I came from Bologna for the day on the very slow milk train--1-1/2 hours each way. These mosaics are not to be missed. The best preserved from this era. And if you have extra time Ravenna is a great small city for people watching and shopping. You can get almost everywhere on foot or bike. It's definitely a cycling town and you can rent near the train station. Besides the fee for the guide you need to buy the 9.5 euro combo ticket that gets you into 5 sites.

This tour was just fantastic. Rosanna, our guide, was super knowledgeable and really loves her Ravenna! It was so nice to have someone to enliven and contextualize these unique and ancient mosaics! And do ask her about restaurants and bars in town too .. the central market is a great place for a drink or dinner after your tour. Definitely better to take an afternoon tour as the churches are much less busy then - we started at 2 pm and most of the churches were nearly empty and that in August!!

Thank you very much for your nice review. I am so glad you liked the tour. And even though our stunning mosaics don't need much explanation to enjoy them, I am happy to have helped you to appreciate them even more, along with the charm of the city centre.

Chiara was our guide. She contributed greatly to our enjoyment of the tour by explaining with so much expertise the mosaics we were seeing. She knows a lot and she shows her knowledge in an entertaining manner. She is very kind. I recommend her with great enthusiasm

Rosanna was an incredible guide. Her knowledge of history, art, geography and more was amazing and very helpful. But what made her so incredible is her willingness to adapt to our group. She showed us the important sites and explained them in terms we could all understand and find interesting. And then she took us to places and had us experience sites, smells and tastes that are uniquely Ravenna and ideal for what we wanted to see and do. I would not only recommend Rosanna as a guide, I would absolutely hire her again myself every time I visit Ravenna.

We did a day trip from Bologna to Ravenna by train. The city is so charming and a relaxing change of pace from bigger cities in Italy. We very much enjoyed our time with Marina! She is very knowledgeable and a great storyteller. The mosaics are beautiful and worth seeing. Having a guide is worthwhile so you can appreciate the full history of Ravenna and the mosaics. After your tour, enjoy the many shops and outdoor cafes that line the cobblestone streets.

Our guide. Claudia, brought the mosaics to life. Her passion and knowledge of Ravenna and its history was tremendous. If we had not booked this tour and simply walked into the sites, we would have missed so much detail and history. We highly recommend this tour!!

Ravenna was a must do in the Emilia-Romagna region. We were treated to a nice tour as our guide was very knowledgeable.

The churches, buildings and mosaics were outstanding. It was a private tour with my 7 family members - and they can accommodate 15 ..... so it was a fair value as well

We did the 10 AM slot and left the rest day - Ravenna is a cool town and good restaurants as well

My wife and I were lucky enough to go on this tour yesterday. Our guide, Claudia, was amazing. Her knowledge and passion for the mosaics and Ravenna history was obvious. The mosaics themselves are exceptional, words truly don't do them justice. We'd recommend this tour to anyone. Thanks again to Claudia.

I went on a school trip to Ravenna and we had a very bad experience with the guide who followed us, extremely racist as we come from southern Italy. From the beginning he had denigrating attitudes and showed hostility towards us, using offensive and scurrilous terminology. I highly recommend an awareness of the millennium we find ourselves in.

We (2 of us) just spent a day with Federica visiting 6 of the 8 UNESCO monuments. We are experienced travelers and always like to hire guides to enhance our visits. Her expertise on the history and art of the monuments was outstanding, and she made the visit far more interesting. Aside from her knowledge, Federica was a pleasure to spend time with. We highly recommend Il Papavero. They were very easy to deal with over email planning our visit. Highly recommended.

We went on an educational visit to Ravenna and the mosaics of some of its monuments with two lower secondary school classes. Our guide, Chiara Rubboli, was truly perfect: very knowledgeable, very kind and truly engaging. It was a great experience!
