Private Market Tour and Cooking Class in Bologna with a Local in Her Home

By Traveling Spoon
About
Enjoy a private and authentic market tour and cooking class in a local Bologna home with your host Giovanna, a native who has lived in Bologna for over 60 years. This is a perfect experience for anyone looking to connect with local culture over food. Start with a memorable tour of one of Bologna's markets. Depending on the day, visit the Mercato del Quadrilatero (a market with medieval origins) or del Erbe where Giovanna buys her seasonal fruit and vegetables. Here, you can buy local and regional produce, from fruit and vegetables to meat, cheese, and salami. Return to Giovanna's home kitchen where she will teach you 2-3 traditional Italian dishes from family recipes - a pasta, sauce and a side or dessert. After cooking, enjoy your meal together with your host, a warm and gentle retired history and philosophy teacher who lives in an apartment in a large villa with her daughters. Giovanna loves cooking particularly enjoys introducing guests to traditional Bolognese culture and cuisine.

      Must do in Bologna!
If you have plans to go to Bologna, I highly recommend the Cooking Experience with Giovanna Salvatto that you can book through Tasting Spoon. Giovanna was delightful and first took us on a walk through the local markets to pick up fresh items for our meal, explaining various ingredients and pointing out city highlights. Back at her adorable apartment, she set about preparing a fabulous lunch consisting of mortadella, prosciutto and Parma to start followed by a yummy risotto with pumpkin and sausage. We then moved onto a pasta with sausage ragout and some roasted vegetables and topped it all of with her homemade tiramisu. Such a fun way to spend an afternoon, enjoying amazing food and getting to know a local and learn about local culture. Grazie Mille Giovanna! @travelingspoons

      Delightful lunch!
It was truly a joy to join Chiara for lunch at her beautiful B&B Casa Vallona! Chiara is delightful and very easy to talk with, and the grounds of her family home, Casa Vallona, are beautiful. We loved the homemade tigelle, the handmade tagliatelle, the elderflower water... everything was delightful. Our lunch with Chiara actually inspired us to change our vacation plans to spend more time in the Italian countryside!! If you have the chance to visit or stay at Casa Vallona, we'd highly recommend it.

      Unforgettable Day Cooking in Countryside
The day with Chiara on her restored family farm and charming home and B and B was an experience beyond expectations. We picked foods from the garden and fruit trees - real farm- to-table - that we enjoyed for lunch. We first relaxed and drank delicious flavored water she made, rolled pasta, and used her grandma’s recipes for a delicious meal, which we ate under the trees. We learned new “tricks”, laughed, and relaxed. Chiara picked us up at the bus stop and drove us through the winding country roads to her hillside farm. The day was one to always remember from our trip to Bologna.

A wonderful way to get to know Bologna
Gio and her daughters were so incredibly generous and friendly! I had the best time exploring the market with her, and learning how to buy food like a pro. As we walked, she gave me a history lesson about the city, and I feel as though I understand Bologna and Italian food culture so much more. After the market, I felt so welcomed into their home, and I learned how to cook wonderful food. The meal we shared was so special for having made it together.

Magical day with Chiara in the Apennines
Before an amazing experience in Chiara's kitchen, she shared the history of her property as we toured her home showing us where she grows many of the ingredients she uses in her recipes. Once in the kitchen she taught techniques learned from her grandmother that resulted in the most amazing lunch. Return we must!

Beautiful country side and lovely experience
I couldn't recommend this more. We had such a nice day out of the city, just eating and chatting around Chiara's historic country home

Fantastic evening with a local family
We had a lovely evening with Giovanna. We were made to feel very welcome in her home where we were taught some traditional Bolognese recipes including Gramigna with sausage, gatto di patate and a selection of antipasti. Giovanna and her family were really friendly and we had an interesting evening with them learning about Italy, food and Bologna itself. The only thing to make clear is that you don't actually make pasta on this course, which was not a problem for us but may be what some other people are looking for. We would highly recommend this to anyone, We would go back again in a heartbeat and this was a really highlight of Bologna for us. Informal, local food and an opportunity to see a more authentic side of Bologna.

      A wonderful experience!
As soon as we met Chaira we felt welcome & at home. We enjoyed the stories of the history of her family's home & learning to make gnocchi with ragu was a fun & a rewarding experience. Sharing our food & wine with our teachers, Chiara, Franca, & Georgia was extra special. It was a highlight of our trip. .

A+ experience with views and a delicious meal
My wife and I felt that we had a true Italian experience. We stayed in Bologna and it was an easy bus trip away where Chiara picked us up and drove us to her house. The tour of the property was stunning. We then cooked a delicious three course meal with ingredients fresh from her garden! Chiara was super nice and energetic. She also has a cute dog named India! We met Chiara at 10:30 when she picked us up and ended up back at our hotel around 4:00. So plan to spend a good portion of your day there.

Had a great time with a local
We took a food tour with Tiago around Copenhagen. He was very personable and spent plenty of time talking to us about the different cultures and food in the area. We tried many interesting things and we walked at a comfortable place from one place to the other. It was an enjoyable day and I would do it again in another country just to get a flavor of the locals.

The best cooking school I’ve ever done anywhere!
Chiara, her amazing home, the food, quality of produce and the land... plus her dog India, and friend Livia, all made my last day in Bologna incredible. I felt like I was cooking and eating lunch with some great girlfriends. I’m so glad I booked with Chiara at her agriturismo instead of somewhere in the city. You can stay at her home too in monte San pietro. I will next time...

      A 100% Italian Experience!
I am so grateful I chose this cooking class over the other classes held within Bologna. I realized this was the right choice as I drove past the massive line of cars stuck in traffic trying to get into the city, and then realized what a relief it was to not have to deal with parking either! The drive to this farm kitchen was breathtaking and everything I could have hoped for. We were greeted with a huge smile by Chiara, an absolutely lovely person, who then gave us a tour of her wonderful property. We learned about her family's unique history while we picked the food we'd be cooking from her garden. After a quick tour of her land and farm, we began to make some of the most authentic, delicious, homemade food I've ever had. Her Godmother was there helping her as well, which gave the whole experience more of that family essence I was hoping to find. The ingredients were fresh, natural and healthy. The lunch we prepared was perfect, and if I'm ever in this area again, I'll be sure to stop by for another cooking lesson! Thank you for your hospitality, and the lessons learned! -Pete

We could not have chosen a better way to spend our first night in Italy. Gio and her daughters welcomed us into their home, and we learned how to make traditional Bolognese dishes: verdure gratinate, tagliatelle al ragù, and involtini. It felt like we were in a cooking show! And the food came out so delicious!

Throughout the course of the evening, we got to know Gio and her family, and they were wonderful teachers, hosts, and guides. They even gave us some very useful tips on traveling in Italy!

Also, during the tour through the city (and the walk up to Gio’s home), there were many of Gio’s friends and former students who greeted us. It was clear that she is loved by the people in this community. And for one evening, we got to see why. We felt very fortunate to have had this experience.
