I booked this tour through the official Coopculture website. The guide was an employee of the Colosseum. It included the underground and arena floor (but not the main floors of the structure).
They provide you with disposable headphones for the audio kit so you can hear the tour guide.
Our guide gave us a wonderful history bringing it up to date to decry the construction of Metro Line C and the damage it is doing to the structure of the Colosseum.

The tour operator contacted me, I didn't realize we were late. I was confused about the meeting place, we were at a different location. They were very patient and considerate. We made it in time. WOW, the tour guide was amazing. She was so knowledgeable and was witty too. We did the night underground tour, AWEsome. You go down stairs adsee the walls and structures. You go to the arena floor too! Highly recommend it!!!!!

I booked this tour last minute for me and my 2 sons and it didn't disappoint. The VAR experience beforehand was really useful to set the scene of what the Coliseum and Roman Forum were. Then the lady who took us round was a very knowledgeable archaeologist who had spent all her career looking at the forum and was able to easily answer questions from the group and add context. I'd definitely recommend and both my sons (hard to please) came away saying they really enjoyed it.

The best part of this tour is Underground of colosseum by night, it was our best tour in Rome.
VR experience was excellent, but could be bit more long. We will recommend this experience.

I wanted to take a night tour to get the most out of being in the Colosseum as it might have been in BC- AND IT WAS! Our tour guide was excellent (here is her picture, but I never got her name and she was very concerned over a man who had lost his ticket on his phone- take paper tickets!). The meeting point was easy and we got to watch a VR of what the colosseum looked like in that time along with gladiators. We then left for the tour (make SURE to bring your ticket and id/passport as security is very tight). The tour was beyond what I imagined it would be! AND when we left we found the restaurant we had been looking for which across the street from other ruins they had open for the public. NOTE- while waiting go into the metro station to watch people buying tickets and YOU MUST get a sugared donut as they are heaven. One young Italian couple was using paper money than the cash machine would not take so as they went to the deli shop for change I handed them $3 Euro coins. He was not understanding, but his girlfriend did and told me "GRAZIE!" with very thankful eyes. Immerse yourself in the moment!

When planning our trip to Rome, we wondered if there were ways we could do things differently - this certainly fit the bill!
As with most tourist spots, the Colosseum can get ever so busy during the day, so we opted to see if it was any quieter at night - and boy was it! We only saw one other tour, which meant we got to enjoy the experience rather than trying to fight off crowds, and the fact that it was dark at night really added to the experience.
The tour itself was incredibly interesting. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the VR experience to begin with was a lovely touch. I have an interest in this subject so I am ever so biased, but even if you don't enjoy history, it is still a spectacle to behold.
If anyone tells me they are going to Rome and plan on visiting the Colosseum, I will 100% be advising them to get an evening tour.
