Fifteen miles southwest of Rome lies Ostia Antica, an immense archeological site that was the harbor city of antiquated Rome. When an enthusiastic focal point of financial flourishing, the city fell into dilapidation and was in the long run relinquished after the fall of the Roman Empire. Following a few centuries, the city was rediscovered and is presently open to open. This half-day visit open's the site's history.

          Poor
The guides English was terrible. Didn't understand a word she said. If they are giving English tours the guide should beable to speak English clearly.

          Coliseum
Donatella was our guide. It does help that she is Roman so was very proud showing off her city. Very informative we learnt so much and she was always making sure we were all together. Still cannot believe we have visited the Coliseum I know thousands do every day but it still felt special to me. Definitely recommend this tour .

Ostia Antica visit it when you visit Rome
How about I post a few pictures with some travel advice for going to Rome Italy when we can travel again . We spend 8 days there and tried to see everything and failed. We did see the big sites including St Peters Basilica and Square, the Vatican museum, the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill, Pantheon, Colosseum, Castel Sant’Angelo, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, many churches including Santa Maria Maggiore, St. John Lateran,Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and Santa Maria in Trastevere and the Borghese Gardens and Art Museum, But I'm going to add one more place we visited that we really enjoyed. It is Rome's ancient port, Ostia Antica, which is about 15 miles southwest of Rome and easily reached by a short railroad trip to the modern city of Ostia. We had recently been to Pompeii and Herculaneum on a visit to Naples and felt the same sense of awe in Ostia Antica that we had in those two famous Roman sites. At times it felt like an ancient Roman in a toga was going to show up around the next corner. Only about 1/3 of the site has been evacuated but it includes a great theater, a small museum, a temple, remains of an apartment building and warehouses. My advice is to plan an extra day in Rome, go out by train and then have a late lunch is a local restaurant (which we did). Now I'll post s few pictures. A couple from Rome and a couple from Ostia Antica.

Martha was all we wanted from a guide
We visited Rome on December (two couples with three young children of 5 & 6 years). Our Vatican tour with Martha was very enjoyable. Martha is a mother herself and knew the right proportions of information and moving us around so that also our kids loved touring with her. Definitely recommended. Thank you Martha!

Excellent guide and fascinating ruins close to Rome
Walking through Ostia with our archaeologist/guide was amazing! The site is very large, wasn't too crowded and our excellent guide created a wonderful impression of ancient life in this important port city. Beautiful black and white mosaics all around, and easy access from Rome.

          Amazing tour with Ostia Tours
I recently had the pleasure of taking a tour of Ostia Antica with Paola through Ostia Tours.  My entire experience with Ostia Tours was excellent.  Deborah responded immediately to my tour request by email, and setting up the tour was easy.  I met my tour guide, Paola, an archaeologist, at the entrance to the archaeological park.  (Ostia is close to Rome and easy to get to by train, though Ostia Tours can also arrange for transportation by car if requested.)  Paola was a wonderful guide - she was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and I had a great time learning about the history of the area.  The ruins are very impressive and extensive, and it was very rewarding to be able to tour them with such a knowledgeable guide. I highly recommend visiting this amazing site through Ostia Tours.

          AMAZING!!
This was the highlight of our trip to Italy to visit all the ruins. Laura, our guide, was so enthusiastic and filled with knowledge we all felt we were walking this well-preserved site 2500 years ago. She was amazing and Ostia was the best site in six visits to Italy. Ask for Laura as your guide and get ready for the best tour of your life! Trust me and just go...

          Amazing Archaeological Site
What an amazing experience we enjoyed today with Angela from City Wonder Tours. Last week we visited Pompei where we were impressed with the quantity and quality of the archaeological remains but less so with the crowds. Today the expanse of Ostia Antica was overwhelming. The tour starts with a short train trip from Pyramid Cafe about 20 minutes from Rome centre to Ostia. It is about 10 euro by taxi or 2 euro by metro. Angela, an academic with outstanding communication skills and knowledge in all things Roman, was our guide. She was so knowledgeable and engaging being able to expertly explain Roman life and explain the economic importance of Ostia to the Roman ancient economy. What was so amazing was the quantity and quality of remains in Ostia. The necropolis has some amazing mausoleums showing brilliantly the changing technology of Romans, the bath areas are in excellent condition with beautiful mosaics, the theatre in excellent condition as were many of the villas and apartments. The restaurant was excellent on the site and very reasonably priced. Toilet facilities were excellent and easy walk to and from the train station. What was so amazing was the lack of crowds. Italians are so aware and proud of this site which the rest of the world are yet to discover. Definitely a highlight of our time in Rome.

A taste of life in ancient Ostia
The Ostia Antica tour offers a great opportunity to experience a bit of what it might have been like to travel or live in this ancient port city. The tour guide was excellent, a visitor could choose to walk around a lot or a little, and one could really imagine the people traveling, trading, working, eating, drinking and generally living here. Amazingly well preserved. Plan to spend at least four hours here if you want to have enough time to explore.

WAS ROME'S MIAN PORT & MILITARY BASE!
Great preserved site. Due to barbarian invasions and malaria eventually all the inhabitants abandoned it. Because it was buried by sand for centuries it is remarkably well preserved. Great historical insight. Everyone needs to do this one!

          Great tour with Angela
Our guide Angela was knowledgable, engaging and funny. The ruins at Ostia Antica are a must-see -- they are in really good condition and provide a solid picture of what life was like in Rome in the 1st - 2nd c. CE.

The tour of Ostia Antica with Francesco was excellent! He is well versed in his history of this ancient city and his passion is evident in all the stories he tells. He was extremely knowledgeable & relayed many interesting facts about this amazing site. The option of hotel pick up was most appreciated as we had already done many walking tours around Rome. Maria was also very accommodating when we had a last minute change in our plans. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Rome!
I would certainly book with this company again on our next trip!

The tour of Ostia Antica was excellent. We were picked up at the hotel and our party of 4 were the only ones on this tour. Very comfortable car. Driver was extremely about Rome as we drove to Ostia. Once there, we were met by our guide Paola who is also an archaeologist. She was so knowledgeable, enthusiastic and entertaining. The site is very special, one that more visitors should take advantage of when in Rome!

In September I stayed at the Hotel Sirenetta in Rome's closest beach town of Ostia, it's only 30 minutes from center of Rome.I am a wheelchair user and was overjoyed to find the facilities so comfortable and safe.
I had a spacious comfortable room, very clean,a secure Transfer chair in shower, hand rails either side of toilet, and ramp to access garden. Staff and owner very kind and accomodating for any request, delightful retro decor
cosy and artistic. September was still beautiful weather and evening dinner was in the garden restaurant
the food was absolutely superb, worthy of a 5*. The hotel is directly opposite the beach with choice of various serviced beaches. I felt very assured, relaxed and tranquil and I'll look forward to going back again.
        A true find.
