Put an underground twist on your visit to St. Peter's Basilica and see the Vatican Necropolis, a sight that standard tour groups don't often see. After entering the church via a fast-track entrance, you'll head below ground to the Roman necropolis, which is believed to be the resting place of St. Peter the Apostle. You'll also visit the main basilica to get the lowdown on Michaelangelo's Pietà and more.
What to Expect
Meet your guide in St. Peter's Square and then enter St. Peter's Basilica via a reserved entranceway to dodge the crowds that linger in the main entry line.

Once inside the church, you'll head underground past the grottoes to the central nave, home of the Vatican Necropolis. Hear the history behind this Roman graveyard from your guide as you walk around both pagan and Christian burial sites, and discover the secrets of this lesser-seen Vatican sight.

After passing the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle, you'll ascend the stairs to the ornate basilica, a church elaborately decorated with marble and mosaic, in contrast to the necropolis below. Follow your guide around the crowds to discover the showpiece sights with ease and learn about the Chapel of Confession, the tomb of St. John Paul II, and masterpieces such as Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's baldachin.

Your Vatican Necropolis and basilica tour then ends inside the church.

Fascinating and informative

I went on this tour yesterday with Jade, who was a wonderfully articulate and informed guide. I hadn't realised the ticket included a guided tour of St Peter's as well as the necropolis (somehow I'd understood we'd look around St Peter's on our own afterwards)...More

Worth it!

I don't think you can put it into words when you are standing next to St. Peter's tomb. This was just so incredible. Saverio was an outstanding guide . He was so kind and helpful. Couldn't say enough good things about him.
