About
Discover the Pantheon and the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva on a Rome walking tour. Laced with intrigue and architectural delight, the two monuments are surprisingly sidelined by many guidebooks. Hear their history from a local guide, and stumble upon Michelangelo sculptures, the tomb of Raphael, and the world’s largest unsupported dome as you explore. Historical reconstructions and multimedia props complete the experience.

  • Learn about the creation of the Pantheon’s visually impressive dome
  • Choose a small-group tour with 15 people or upgrade to a private tour option
What to expect
From Piazza della Minerva in Rome, stroll with your guide to the Pantheon. The temple is widely said to be one of Ancient Rome’s best-preserved monuments; hear its history as you explore inside with your guide. Gaze up at the huge dome, which has no visible vaults or arches to support it, and learn about the architectural achievement from your guide. Tear your eyes away from the open-air oculus, which illuminates the interior and rest them on the tombs of Rome’s bygone VIPs: The likes of Raphael and Queen Margherita were laid to rest in the Pantheon. From the ancient temple, walk across to the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, a Gothic masterpiece built on top of pagan temples. Sculptures by Michelangelo and Bernini, 15th-century frescoes, and a Fra Angelico altar are just a few of the highlights. Your tour ends at the basilica.

Mateo is an excellent guide. His passion and knowledge of the Pantheon is vast and impressive. As Santa Maria Minerva was unexpectantly close Mateo just pivoted and took us to a better church instead. Of the twelve tours we attended this one was the best because of Mateo!

We had seen the pantheon before but we had never taken a tour. The tour is definitely the way to go. Mateo is an excellent guide. Santa Maria Sopra Minerva was closed for the day so we saw the church of Saint Ignatius instead. The artwork on the ceilings was spectacular as it was done in a three dimensional perspective. I would highly recommend Mateo and this tour.

I guess we were quite lucky that our group of three were the only people on this tour this day. Our tour guide was Mattia and he was great. He told us a lot about the Pantheon that we didn't know, was very much into telling us about the sites around and near the pantheon and also took us to a local church with an amazing history and an illusional three dimensional ceiling. He made the tour so very interesting and I would recommend him highly--Many thanks.

We were lucky enough to be assigned Mattia as our guide. He was fluent, knowledgeable and completely engaged as he took us around the agreed sites. He clearly had a love for his subject and at no point did he appear to be reeling off from a script. It really was a delight to spend this time with him and his knowledge was second to none. I would recommend this tour, this company and this guide unequivocally

We enjoyed the tour, and would recommend Virginia as a guide. Some unfortunate circumstances dampened our experience. The cathedral that was part of the tour is in renovation, so, was not accessible. There was rain and wet streets. So, our timing factored in on our overall enjoyment.

Surprisingly, I was the only visitor on this tour, primarily due to the low season however this only worked in my favour. The tour lasted approx. 2.5 hours and was consistent with interesting and a depth of information in which was greatly beneficial to me. My tour guide (Virginia) was lovely. Being that of my second last day in Rome it was nice to go home on such a positive note and thankful for this tour being one of the best I've been on.

After a rocking start du to three time change in the departure time,- none of which were the guide’s fault, we had a wonderful and informative tour. Mateo was absolutely superb. The Santa Maria Sopra was closed for renovation - this was actually fortunate for us as we went to St Ignacio of Loyola Church instead and we were thrilled with this visit

We did this tour this morning with Mattia (hope I have spelt that right). It was brilliant - lots of interesting info crammed into 1.5 hours - perfect length on another hot Rome day. Mattia was happy to answer lots of questions, his English was excellent and he was really friendly. Definitely recommend this tour, especially at 10am - by the time we came out of the Pantheon they had shut the gates and people were having to queue to get in.

We would have missed a lot if we went without a gude.
Our guide Claudia was very plesant, informative and even though the cue for Pantheon was quite long, the whole tour just flew by.
For some reason, only two of us booked the tour gor that time, and we got a private tour (which of course made it even better).
Once again, kudos to our guide. :)
