- stevepmorris00Appian Way pleasant walkThe Appian Way is well worth exploring for a different view of Rome. Outside the city is pleasant countryside where you can see the old Roman road, including a part with original paving. There are also ruined mausoleums in pleasant parkland. We took the bus out and then walked part of the way on a sunny but not hot afternoon - don't try this in high summer!
- meandros00Open to traffic on Sunday do not believe blogsNot closed to traffic on Sunday. So many blogs said go on Sunday. No. This is not what you want, it is not made a pedestrian street on Sunday. In fact the first part that is pedestrian is closed on Sunday. So there is more traffic on Sunday than other days. The tourist office looked at me like I was insane, no it is not closed to cars. The first part closest to Rome where the Museum and visitor center is is scary, it is like walking through a tunnel. The walls are high on each side there is no sidewalk and there is lots of fast two way traffic. If I went again I would go during the week, take the pedestrian rode from the visitor center to San Sebastian which I could not accès on Sunday. Or I would take the bus further down to parts of the road where there is only some local traffic and the conditions are bad enough to discourage drivers. Bus 118 from Piazza Venezia goes along the road and stops in a few pints then cuts out to the new point. This is easy to use as a one way walk. Biking in the heavy traffic seems perilous and the paths aren't great for it often little room between trees and walls, spots people were carrying their bike through water. We walked the first 6km and I was happy with that choice.
- C7551EFbrianh00Villa Quintilli is well worth seeing! A gem off the normal tourist track! We took a taxi from the centre of Rome to the great round tomb of the Metellus family then on to the fabulous villa of the Quintilli brothers. A 10 euro pass can be purchased at the Tomb that will get you into both. The Tomb reveals the history of the funerary practices of the Romans. The Villa Quintilla is wonderful. There is a modern museum at the entrance that reveals many of the fascinating objects found there. The Villa lies further on and up a small hill. It is well worth the hike!
- Alex J00CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY'S!We didn’t find this information anywhere online before visiting. Arrived at the tourist information centre and the lady there gave us all the info and the map - told us two or three things were closed and where to go and then we walk up to the start point. Gates are locked and there’s a sign that says closed on Wednesdays. Try to replan our route to go around that section, walk back to tourist information and ask and she told us the entire route and everything on it other than one church was closed! Total waste of time. I’m sure it’s good to visit when open but be aware of this!
- Fernando F00A very important road in historyThe Via Appia was a Roman road that connected Rome to Brundisium (Brindisi), one of the most important ports of ancient Italy, a port from which trade routes for Greece and the East began. The Appia, considered by the Romans the queen viarum (queen of the roads), is universally held, in consideration of the era in which it was built (end IV - III century BC), one of the greatest engineering works of the ancient world for the enormous economic, military and cultural impact it had on Roman society. Wide sections of the road, particularly in the suburbs of the city of Rome, are still preserved and passable as well as a destination for archaeological tourism. it is very beautiful to visit for history and culture lovers
- LoveToTravelTerrie00Low key but large open spaceThis was a large park marking the beginning of the Appian Way. It was pretty low key so there were not a lot of shops, signs or well marked buildings. However there was a lot of open space which was a nice break from the crowds of central Rome. Plan to spend several hours here if you want to see the sites that are along the way. Be sure to stop at the tourist info building (close to the bus stop) for a great map and to talk to some very nice staff. Bus #118, or a taxi, gets you there.
- diannachayden00Wow. The history. We had a personalized tour and we requested that our driver deposit us on one of the most scenic parts of the Appian Way. Thankfully, our guide explained how the original road was built and he showed us several locations along the way. I think it is a must-see. Parts of it are original to the 312 BC road. Unbelievable and amazing.
- SuperTed1900A Day Well SpentCutting to the chase, the Appian Way is worth spending an entire day of your Roman Holiday. There is so much to explore and so much natural beauty to enjoy that it would be a shame to rush through everything in a morning or afternoon. Pro Tip: rent (or bring your own) bicycles. A lot more ground can be covered, and it is fun!
- LutheranLadySanDiego00A Very Long HikeBefore you go, take the time to secure your plan for return transportation. I kept telling my husband we wouldn't have trouble finding a cab. However, we ended up walking all the way back to the Colosseum. Yikes! The area is really lovely to explore. There are two routes to take in the area we were in. One was the upper path, an easy level walk past catacombs (we didn't visit) and private villas. The lower route is the actual pavement stones of the Appian Way, more difficult to negotiate (no pedestrian walkways for a good part of the way) and definitely used by bikes and cars even on the Sunday we visited. (We thought it would be closed to traffic on a Sunday, but that was a misstatement by our guide book.) This was the only thing on our agenda for the day, and we were glad to finally return to our hotel. Glad we did it though!
- katherined15800Beautiful Open SpaceThis is a wonderful place to hike or walk - just beware of mud after the rains! Many locals here walk dogs, bike and run through the park, which is huge.
- bla68bla00un mustOne of the unique things to do in Rome is to follow the Appian Way. It’s not so much the road itself that is an incredible site, instead what you’ll encounter along the route. With so many stops to make, it’s best to take advantage of a guided tour to ensure you catch all the highlights. Roman aqueducts, Caffarella Park, St. Callixtus Catacombs, etc.. and the Tomb of Caecilia Metella are some of the places you can visit.it's a walk into the past, wonderful, amazing landscapes
- Yak V00A little dreadful for walkers. Without bikes or car not worth the hike. The Appian Way is one of the most illegally inhabited archeological sites out there. In other words, much of what you see when you first get there has been gated off into illegal estates, which is so disappointing. Therefore a lot of what you hit to begin with is just walled off streets-even the open park that houses several catacombs is technically a private property that allows visitors. You can visit for free but you have to pay to see the actual catacombs. I wouldn't have minded so much if I could have gotten to the further, greener parts, but what is not clarified about the Appian Way is the distance it will take you to walk to anything worth looking at from any of the bus stops (#118). There is the open park, that is true, but once you leave it you are walking for miles along what is essentially a walled-in highway. There is no sidewalk either and some people gun it down the road, so it doesn't feel crazy safe. After a good hour I ended up at a small museum near the Capo di Bove where an overenthusiastic museum guy gave me an interesting history of the park but also would not stop grabbing my bare shoulders. He then told me it was too dangerous for a girl alone to go much further as it was later in the day, the irony of which was a little funny as he was the only man I was trying to get away from. Great experience I think not. Do it by car or bike and aim for the further parts down from the catacombs.
- Igor P00Worst visit during my stay in RomeSo every guide I read mentions this as great thing to walk and visit. First day after we arrived, we walked from our place to here, expecting those great park from pictures. If you come after 17h, apparently everything along the way is closed, you are literally walking on a road and cars/buses and trucks are driving next to you since there is no pavement for you to walk on. First we were going back and forth trying to find a way into those park, but there are big walls and doors everywhere so you can't acces anything. In the end we figured to go to that park you have to walk miles on that road. No problem, after around hour- half of walking, we were apparently getting quite close, but several local people we encountered along the way and asked them about it told us, it's probably not so safe after dark falls down. In the end we went back as dark was slowly starting to set in, because we didn't want to get robbed or worse during first day in Rome... Unless you have a bike/car/use a bus and want to come earlier in the day, don't bother with it. Plenty of great stuff in Rome and close to it.
- DaryaKiev00A nice place with ancient road, ruins and fresh air outside RomeA place of relax and lots of activities to do. You can rent a bike to drive the ancient road in a fresh air. The smell of cedars, the voices of the birds and a quite - what can be better?
- rcw201100Such an underrated attraction!Hired bikes and cycled 8km along the Appian Way and back. Such a fantastic experience; unbelievable it’s only a few miles outside of central Rome - it feels like total countryside! Bikes €3pp per hour from the hire centre (€6pp per hour for electric). Free helmets offered. Avoid Wednesdays; you can normally travel the first mile or so on the bus only route to the catacombs, but it was closed when we went so we had the cycle the main road for that bit. I wouldn’t take kids on the main road. We walked to the bike hire centre from Central Rome but I wouldn’t recommend it; it’s mostly on main roads; pick up a bus / taxi from Circo Massimo.

Bikes were in very poor condition. Very poorly maintained, chains kept coming off both our bikes, they were noisy, gears constantly grating. Don’t think they had seen a drop of oil in a long time. While the route on the Via Appia Antica is lovely and worth doing, I would not recommend hiring bikes from this outlet.

Extremely interesting, sometimes challenging cycling through this ancient Italian landscape!! The ride is slow & go with plenty of side details to absorb. The To and Fro for the trail access was, um, tricky. I have two suggestions: Bike mirrors & lights for safety // clearer Map drawn with graphics (roads, directions, paths) designated. Riding along side the speedy traffic was horrendous for me. Take my ideas please, before someone is hurt. Thanks all, Paul Marinello 06/23

We enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the Appia Antica Regional Park. The bikes were in very good condition and the rental office is easy to get to with the Metro and Bus. It was nice to have a break from the crowds in Rome.

As advertised. They provided a detailed map, and the staff was helpful explaining the route including a detour to Aqueduct Park. Pack a pair of bike shorts, it’s a bumpy road.
