The Sistine Chapel is the “Attention Getter”
Guided tour is the way to go to get the true value and understanding of what the Vatican museums have to offer. We did the ‘Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St Peter’s Basilica’ guided tour. Being escorted by an expert tour guide, there’s shorter waiting time in line and easy navigation through the labyrinth of rooms and artwork. St Peter’s Basilica is stunning to see, indoors and outdoors. Lots to see at an easy pace and not overcrowded or stressful – quite spacious. I found Pope John XXIII quite fascinating to see – his corpse waxed, not embalmed, lays in a glass coffin. One of my daughter said that he looks like Santa. Oh… to see the Sistine Chapel, you must go through the entire Vatican Museums, which is at the very end, where you will find ‘The Last Judgement’ painted by Michelangelo Buonarroti. Let’s not kid ourselves, The Last Judgement is the “attention getter” and our main reason why we did this tour and definitely for many other tourists to visit Vatican Museums. We were struck with admiration standing under the much talked about, famous detailed work of art, which only took Michelangelo four years to complete – ceiling and vault decoration. Unfortunately, it was overcrowded, you could barely move, to appreciate the artwork and as a whole, the experience was not enjoyable. I simply don’t understand nor have we were given a valid reason why we can’t take photos of the Sistine Chapel? Our tour guide showed passion, professionalism and had immense knowledge and in-depth description of ancient artworks and artists involved. However, she told us, that if we spend one minute in front of each art work (20,000 are on display) in the Vatican Museums, it would take you four years to get through it. Our tour guide had a quietvox for us to hear clearly, as we all were given earphones to hear what she had to share. Should you still want to see the Sistine Chapel, I highly recommend Viator, they give you clear and helpful information of the meeting point, time and what you need to bring – yes, you definitely need to bring a valid passport for entry purposes. Be sure to wear comfy walking shoes (a lot of walking and stairs involved) and also bring a bottle of water – lots of drinking fountains available throughout. There’s definite room for improvements that could be made and that is to cut back on the amount of visitors at The Vatican, so the experience won’t be overwhelming or not enjoyable. Definitely not suitable for children. Note: When we booked the tour, we were advised that you must wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees when visiting sacred or holy places, which we did. But when we got there, we had noticed a plethora of exposed shoulders and knees. It was a heatwave that day, not too sure if the workers there were told to “turn a blind eye” or they simply used common sense? I would suggest, if it’s a hot day, wear cool clothing but bring with you a scarf for just-in-case.

Colosseum must see with a good guide
City Wonders' Colosseum & Ancient Rome with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Tour is well organized. The team arrived on time at the designated area, and the guide was knowledgeable. The experience of seeing the sights while listening to fascinating stories and historical accounts is priceless.

    Heather was wonderful!
Our guide Heather was simply great! She really made the day perfect! She was so nice, informative and funny without being annoying! She showed us all the hidden places for incredible views, and made sure we were all having a great time! You don’t have to be a wine drinker to enjoy this tour! Great day!

Just missed group because of construction work. A small notification would have made all difference. We passed our group before we checked in. We continued into closeup on our own; still worth it.

    Splendid trip with splendid people
The tour guide (Sonia with an I) was really lovely and provided a great service to us. She provided us with in depth information about Rome and Sorrento and the meanings behind the mountains, the coast and the Roman times. She ensured the information was the right level and made sure she spoke to everyone on the tour which was very sweet. This tour is a must to attend as there is so much to learn but extremely fun too! Thank you Sonia for the little present (lemon soap).

    A must do
We took the Pompeii and Sorrento trip in September. This trip was well worth the money . Be prepared it is a long day but so jammed packed full of great sights, information and entertainment. The enthusiasm our tour guide, John, shares with the participants is fabulous! He is funny, extremely knowledgeable and incredibly helpful! Sorrento was breathtakingly beautiful and Pompeii is an absolute MUST SEE! This city is so well preserved that you can almost feel the people that lived in this town 2000 years ago!

    Sad
The ticketing was very good can't fault the collection point and helpfulness of the staff but the Vatican trip itself is an abomination of what it once was. I expect busy and yes it's August I have been before but to see never ending huge vast swathes of tourists crammed into the beautiful corridors being herded into the place and packed to bursting in the Sistine Chapel is sad beyond measure. I felt like I was leaving a football match it was that crowded. This is just a cash cow now there is no respect for the beauty around you honestly shameful and pricey too, this in comparison to Uffizi Gallery or Academia in Florence same month where you have space and quietness to appreciate the beauty - what a sad place it has become a money making cash cow for the Catholic church.

    Don’t waste your time!
Was hoping for a breath taking experience. However, it was absolutely terrible. Started with an enormous security queue, baring in mind this tour is 'fast entry' and 'skip the queue', the entry absolutely wasn't fast. Nor was the queue organised, starting as one large group of people having no idea where they are supposed to queue and people being able to join the queue anywhere they desire. Was happy to see past this however the tour has easily become the worst experience I've had on holiday yet. They clearly let far too many people in and it turned into being herded like cattle through the entire of the museum and the Sistine chapel. We were continually ushered through the entire area, including the chapel due to there being so many people, we needed to keep walking and so probably spent a maximum 30 seconds in the chapel - couldn't tell you what it looked like! I expect when organised it would be fascinating, but this was clearly to get as many people through to get more money.

    Jon rocks for Italy!!
We did the full day trip and it was amazing and made even more so by our tour guide Jon. Information, knowledge, interaction and overall just really helpful. Learned more about Italy during the tour than we thought possible and would jump on another guided tour if Jon was guaranteed as the guide!!!

    Great Tour!
We thought the tour was great, and especially great with our guide Jon who painted us some great historic pictures and sailed us trough everything. So we had a really good time, however we wish we could stay in Sorrento some more. Pompeii was really great and again our local Pompeii guide aslo was amazing. So this Tour can really be reccomened. But please bring some food just to have in between.

    John the amazing tour guide.
We decided to try this tour guide for our Pompeii experience and it was definitely the highlight of the trip to Italy. John our tour guide was a wealth of information, a funny, knowledgable and entertaining guide who appeared to ensure everyone on the tour had the best experience possible. He was very attentive to everyone and nothing was too much trouble for him to deal with. Thank you John for an amazing experience and full day of entertainment. Will definitely be booking up again for this or other tours in the list of experiences! Well worth the money!

    The best day out!
This was an incredible day trip for us, and John was probably one of the best guides I think I've ever had on an excursion, and I am well traveled so this says a lot. Not only did John make the entire coach laugh constantly, but he was incredibly informative, from the history of Rome and surrounding areas, to types of food and wine that have originated in Rome, and where to find authentic Restaurants that aren't tourist traps, so that we could have good experiences in the city. Sorrento is absolutely gorgeous and is somewhere I would like to return to, for longer, and Pompeii... wow!! Long story short, I would highly recommend this trip and if you get John as your guide (American guy, cant miss him), you're in luck!!

We booked back to back tours of St Peters (including doom climb) then a private tour of the Vatican museum and Sisten chapel. First tour ran late and despite leaving it early and running to the second location we were 5minutes late. We arrived at 1035 and we were supposed to be there at 1030. When we arrived the unhelpful guide in the location said our tour had left. Despite knowing the group would not have even cleared security he would not contact his colleague or try and help us join. So disappointing as we had already done multiple tours with them and on every occasion we waited in access of 15 min for late arrivals. We also tried to call as we were running to the venue only to get a recorded voice mail. Of course City Wonders was unwilling to offer a refund or credit, which I believe is questionable given it is my understanding they only pay the Vatican for the number of people that actually enter. Anyway I rate a company’s customer service on how they handle these type of issues. 0 stars to City Wonders on this occasion.

Dear R6505UYjohns, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on Trip Advisor. We are sorry to hear that you missed your second tour to the Vatican Museums. Unfortunately, the first tour you booked ( St Peter's Dome Climbing with Basilica) started at 08:10 AM and was finishing at 10:25 AM. And your next tour on the same day, which you missed ( Vatican Semi Private tour) was scheduled to depart at 10:30 AM, with check in 15 minutes prior to the departure. To walk between the 2 locations, there is a 12 to 16 minute walk from the Basilica to the Vatican Museums. We are sorry that you did not contact us prior to booking the tours, as we would have recommended you to book the Vatican Semi private tour for a later departure time as you would not have made it to your next tour unfortunately. All our confirmations clearly state that clients must check in at least 15 minutes prior to start of the tour. Also, we include the duration of each tour and the expected end time. Also, depending on the tour, we may be able to wait a few extra minutes, unfortunately with the Vatican Museums tours, the tickets we get have a specific entrance time on them and the venue is very strict so if we miss the entrance time, we cannot get in and the entire group is penalized; which is not something we can risk with the clients who made it on time. As a result, for this tour, the guide could not wait for late arrivals. I would like to clarify as well, that the Vatican tour you booked was not Private but Semi Private, which means that there were other clients in your group. Please kindly note that as a courtesy, we always try to call clients who are not at the meeting point before the official departure time, our records show that one of our agents tried to contact you too but there was no answer. Finally, I would like to clarify that the Vatican tickets bear a specific entrance time that has to be respected. Once that time has passed, the ticket is invalid and cannot be used. It is also non refundable and therefore lost. As result, the tickets that were reserved for your party were pre-purchased and non refundable. We are sorry that despite all our efforts we failed to satisfy you. Thank you for your understanding. Kindest Regards Chadia City Wonders.

Please be aware of this company’s cancellation policy !! They are totally inflexible….even when you book your tour months in advance.

We booked this tour in April 2022 for 6pm on the 13th August 2022. Unfortunately, we mistakenly arrived for the tour a day early on 12/08/2022. We were leaving Rome the next day and we really wanted to go on this tour. We asked the tour guides if we could be accommodated on the tour that day. However, the tour guides did not facilitate us in anyway. As soon as we realised we could not go on the tour we emailed City Wonders (23 hours and 53 minutes in advance, prior to our scheduled tour) and explained the situation. They charged us €211 and though we realise we made an error regarding the booking date, they refused a refund in what was a genuine situation. They stuck rigidly to their policy.

In the end we simply entered the Vatican Museum with the Vatican’s electronic tour guide for €70 and spent over 3 hours exploring this fantastic place. This tour option is highly recommended and at a third of the price charged by City Wonders.

We had used City Wonders before and enjoyed their service. However, we will not use them again as in our experience they make no reasonable effort to accommodate customers. Definitely room for improvement in customer service…..Five minutes outside their deadline and no refund !!

Dear 972liamh, Thanks for sharing your review. We are sorry for the inconvenience occurred to you. I'm afraid our Terms and Conditions are clearly written on your voucher. It is responsibility of each client to check their plans and scheduling before travelling or before taking a tour. We do have fixed entrance to the venue even with a private option, this is why we ask to arrive 15 min before the departure of the tour. In situations like this one, we always try to offer an alternative, if available and suits our clients. However, we have passed on your feedback to our Guide Product Management Teams, and we can assure you that they will act on your advice to improve our tours going forward and to ensure that other customers do not encounter similar issues. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for taking the time to share your review. Best regards, Simona City Wonders

This tour only includes the museums and not an actual tour of the Sistine Chapel or St. Peter’s Basilica, just tickets to go to see those on your own, so what we paid for and what we got was misleading. When we arrived through conversation the guide mentioned we could see them on our own. When I asked about them being included and showed my voucher stating all three were included the guide basically said in NOT a very nice way, like she was annoyed “That was two years ago, we don’t even do those tours anymore. I’m just a guide, you’re on your own, you have to deal with the tour company yourself...” I got the impression this had happened before. I messaged the tour company on the spot and didn’t get a response until two days later long after the tour was over basically saying it did not include St. Peter’s Basilica. So, not the most professional way to handle and not what we paid for. Buyer beware.

Dear HJDMunoz, Thank you for posting a review on Trip Advisor. We're sorry that we are no longer including Saint Peter's Basilica. However we would like to clarify that this is clearly stated in the description of the tour before you book it. This tour used to last 3 hours pre-Covid, however now the new duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes as we are unable to access the Basilica using the passage between the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. The reason is that the Vatican Museums have closed this access since the start of Covid. Please note that the price has also been adjusted and the tour is cheaper due to the Basilica not being included. Regarding the Sistine Chapel, I would like to clarify that this is included and the guide did take you there; however the venue does not allow the guides to speak inside the Sistine Chapel, therefore they have to provide all the comments outside the Chapel and then let the clients go in on their own and stay there for as long as allowed. Finally, we reply to all emails but it may take us up to 48 hours hours to get back to emails depending on the volume. Therefore for any urgent queries, we recommend that clients contact us over the phone so that we can assist immediately. We wish you safe travels. Kindest Regards Chadia City Wonders.

I would provide zero stars if that option was available. Our private tour of The Vatican never happened because the tour was canceled by the operator the night before. The only explanation given was that "after the pandemic, not many guides want to do tours any more." Why offer a tour when they know that they don't have enough guides to facilitate the tours? We booked this tour months in advance. We missed the opportunity to re-schedule due to the last-minute cancellation. Our week in Rome was packed with activities, and many other private tours offered through other tour companies. All of the other tours were phenomenal, and we had no problems. We had blocked out this particular day to explore Vatican City. Due to the last-minute cancellation, we were left scrambling, and our children missed out on the opportunity to see The Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums. We specifically chose to book private tours well in advance in order to avoid being in large groups. We were very disappointed with how this company handled the last minute cancellation of our tour. We did receive a refund, but the apology was apathetic, at best.

Dear J8427OWamyd, Thank you for posting your review. We are very sorry about your experience. Like many companies in the travel industry, City Wonders faced an unprecedented post-pandemic surge in demand during the past few weeks. This combined with Covid-related impacts and guides getting sick last minute, caused operational issues. Please contact us directly at customer.service@citywonders.com if you still need assistance or would like to share more details with us. Kind regards, Federica City Wonders

Don’t book with City Wonders. There are plenty of other tour options when you get there that are less pricey than city wonders. My wife and I showed up to their supposed meet up spot and they did not display their city wonders sign therefore I could not find them, which ultimately led to them leaving without us.

When I called to reschedule or get a refund, they said since it was past the time of the reservation, there was nothing they can do.

Be advised they have false advertisement on their website saying they will help with rescheduling and refunds, however this was not the case.

Check-in process was very easy. Our tour guide, Ursus, was great! He didn’t give too much “over your head” information but was personable with each member of our 10 person group and provided great commentary through the crowded Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica.

This is a don’t miss tour when in Rome. Our tour guide Amil was excellent. She was so knowledgeable and made it fun. She personalized these people from centuries ago which made them come to life in our minds. If you are lucky enough to get Amil you will be so fortunate as she is the best tour guide I’ve ever had and I travel a lot.

Marle (pronounced Marlay) was our incredible guide. She was tall, elegant, funny, and oh so knowledgeable. Her inside knowledge of the art work of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and St Peter's was almost overwhelming and although there was no way we could possible absorb it all, it inspired us to do some of our own research and reading on Pope Julius II, the Warrior Pope. Not only was she fantastic as a guide and teacher, but she also made sure we got on the correct train with some insider info for out trip back to Civitavecchia. We plan on being back in Rome next year and will definitely try to have Marle again for a guide!

Our tour was cancelled one week before our trip and they tried to move us to a small group tour - not what we wanted at all. The gentleman to whom I spoke seemed to think giving a week notice was more than ample time, but don't most people have other things planned and it can be hard to find another tour at the last minute. We booked this tour nearly two months ago. I would hesitate to use this company in the future.

This was an absoltuely incredible experience. Our guide - Elisabetta was just phenomonal. She took us to see all the highlights of the Vatican Museum, ensuring we didn't miss anything. She was incredibly knowledgable on quite literally everything in there. After the museum, we went into the Sistine Chapel and then St Peters Basilica. This is a tour I would highly recommend. The meeting point was very easy to find and Elisabetta made this a day to remember! Nothing was too much trouble and she was able to answer every single question! Thank you!!!
