National Archaeological Museum of Naples

By Michele Arpa
About
The National Archaeological Museum of Naples is a precious treasure chest ranging from the collection of finds from Magna Grecia, to the first Egyptian collection opened in a modern museum, to the monumental collection of statues of the Farnese family, with the Hercules and the imposing group del Toro, ending with the spectacular display of the thousands of finds excavated from 1738 in the cities of Ercolano, Pompei, Stabia, Oplonti: mosaics, objects of everyday life, the erotic objects of the surprising secret Cabinet, the frescoes, which will bring us back back in time to 79 AD, the year in which Vesuvius destroyed the cities around its perimeter. And all of this is inserted in the majestic seventeenth-century palace, which today faces the end of one of the most important arteries of the historic center of Naples.

      Wonderful tour of historic Naples!
Michele was one of the best local guides we have ever had! He took us on a three hour walking "appetizer" introduction through Naples' historic centrale. He answered all of our questions and told us so much about history. He was a true pleasure to be with and has a fun sense of humor! Highly recommend!

      Amazing World Class Pompei Guide
What a tour! Michele makes Pompei come alive…you will love walking the streets, entering the residences, and learning all kinds of insights about what day to day life was like in the most advanced civilization on earth. Pompei is Michele’s passion.,.he loves sharing its secrets with you in an intimate way. He will meet you at the train station in Naples and ride with you to Pompei which makes the short trip easier to navigate. We got a parking ticket in Tuscany and since we don’t speak Italian needed help paying it online. Michele said “no worries” and helped us deal with it. Bottom line he cares about the people he guides and you’ll form a bond. That’s not always the case.

Nice guide for Pompeji and Herculaneum
Michele was a great guide, knowledgeable and friendly. I was with him in Pompeji and Herculaneum. It was a great pleasure to learn the history and stories behind the two sites.

      Brilliant guide
Michèle was the perfect guide. We met him in the archeological museum in Naples where he gave us a tour with great explanations on the history and the art. He also organised a private trip to Herculaneum and Pompéi the next day with chauffeur + him as guide which was perfect ! Thanks a lot Michele.

      Very competent!
We met Michele in National Archeological Museum and we really enjoyed the tour, so we booked a whole day with him for Herculaneum and Pompeii afterwards (so we actually did three of the activities listed here). Although Pompeii exhibition areas were quite restricted due to Covid-19, he warned us ahead, and made sure the trip was worth our time with comprehensive explanations. He was friendly, competent, well organized, and he speaks English well :) He also gave us suggestions for the rest of our vacation, and for food! Overall I think he had great judgement to recommend his visitors experiences they would enjoy.

This is a really impressive museum, particularly for its incomparable Farnese Collection of Roman antiquities, mainly sculptures. A special exhibition on Enrico Caruso was also facinating to see. Altogether, we spent two hours in the museum, having arrived there at 13.00 hours and paid the steep €15 entrance charge even though we are both "senior citizens"; rarely in Italy is there any reduction for seniors, even though children under 18 usually get in free.

What was very disappointing was that we only learned, on inquiring from an invigilator, that there was no possibility of seeing the famous Gabinetto Segredo because it closes (for some inexplicable reason) at 13.00. So although we greatly admired what we saw there, we left feeling cheated. Had we known about the museum's arrangements, we would have gone at an earlier time. But we didn't, until it was too late.

The museum is an outstanding collection of Roman and other ancient artifacts in general and of the Pompei/Herculaneum area in specific. This is an important point to consider when visiting those two sites. I went to Pompei several years ago and I was totally impressed. When I went this time, I was underwhelmed because a lot of the best stuff had been removed to the museum. While this makes total sense from preservation perspective I was a little disappointed. When I went to the museum, I didn't give it the attention it deserved thinking that the best stuff would come on the sites. My advice is to not see one without keeping the other in mind and to spend time in both to get the full complementary experience.

That said, the museum is organized into several wonderful collections. GO AND PLAN SOME TIME TO DO IT. t will add tremendously to the experience of Pompei and Herculaneum.

This museum is so well done that you will need more time to see all of its artifacts. I expected a museum of pieces relevant to Naples, but what I got was a tour de force of many ancient pieces. The rooms (halls) are loaded with statues, mosaics, objects of the Greek and Roman eras of the Naples region. Amazingly, the viewing areas are not cramped with so many tightly packed objects; rather they are well spaced and well presented.

Visited the museum from our base in Sorrento. Went from Sorrento Train Station on the Campagna Express to Garibaldi and from there caught the tube to Museo on Linear 1. It’s very simple as the Museum is right next door to the Station! The tickets are cheap and it far out ways getting a taxi from the train station , which is very, very busy. The Museum is a beautiful building and houses many rooms filled with artefacts from Pompei, Herculaneum, and other historical locations. Three hours flew by as you become transfixed by the stunning quality of the exhibits. If you have visited Pompei & Herculaneum then this is a must see location. Great value for money and a wonderful day out.

Visited the museum during the morning before going on a tour of the Naples underground in the evening. This is an amazing museum with so much representation of the early days of Italy up to current day. The museum is very beautiful but the area that it sits in is not very well maintained as far as cleanliness. There are many rooms with artifacts from across the history of Italy. We spent about three to four hours in the museum, but it felt like it was shorter. Don't bother with the audio headsets. We rented them and maybe used them twice.

If you are interested in the archaeology of the area, this museum is an absolute must. The presentation of an outstanding area of artefacts, mosaics, statues and frescoes is brilliantly done and the information about each piece lets you place it fully in context of its original location and discovery. If visiting Pompeii or Herculaneum, coming here before or after you go will truly increase your appreciation of the artistry, magnificence and craftsmanship of the earlier inhabitants of campania. It also has a good cafe for when you need to sit and rest. Plus there is an AV show that shows what Pompeii looked like pre-eruption that manages not to be cheesy at all. Well worth a visit.

Skip the lines gets you in a bit faster. We visited at 9 am when they first opened and it wasn’t busy. The museum is very interesting, lots to see. The museum includes two outdoor courtyards, which are beautiful. The building includes elevators, washrooms and a cafeteria. Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours at the museum.

While there's no denying that the archaeological museum is interesting and has some unique finds, the price is absurd for the size of the museum. The museum looks quite large, but it really takes only an hour to get through it all, which is definitely not worth the 22 euro tickets.

We didn’t know much about this Museum which is a sad reflection on us as it is truly amazing and makes a visit to Naples worthwhile - along with the pizza at Pizzeria Brandi!
